Kimbrel traded

Wow, you have to be impressed by the sheer quantity of specs going back. For two years of Kimball? An equivalent package by the Twins? Maybe something along the lines of Minnydriver, Bunnhalves, Cabbagepatch, and either Gorgonzola or Copernicus.

It's a lot to give up, but none of the prospects will help SD in 2016, and potentially never will.

But then, I don't have much faith in prospects in general. I'm more of a win now guy.

There will always be more prospects down the road. For every team.

I generally agree, giving up good but not elite guys for one of the 2-3 best relievers for three years of control seems reasonable. A franchise like Boston should be willing to do this all the time. Mid-market teams should probably be a little bit more conservative.

I also don't fall as neatly into the sabermetric dogma that diminishes the value of late inning guys quite as much as is now generally accepted.

It's easy to say this when they aren't our prospects.  Margot was ranked at 25 by MLB at midseason, with Guerra at 76.   That's nearly the equivalent of giving up Berrios (19), Polanco (75) and others.   While I generally agree giving up low-level specs for a known commodity is a good thing.  But, in this case, giving up so many highly rated specs for 60 innings over two seasons, seems foolish.  If they got back 200 innings, or 600 at bats, I'd find your argument more justifiable.

Well, he has an option for a third year, so it might be over three instead of two.

And I value bullpens much higher than some. Always have. I don't care whether its as a closer or a seventh inning guy, but someone who I'm confident is going to be dominant over 55 or so appearances is worth more than raw numbers show. A lot of MLB games are close. Having a late inning advantage is, well, an advantage. A big one.

And Margot, for what it's worth, has yet to post a .750 OPS in the minors, and is roughly equivalent to where Aaron Hicks was ranked as a prospect at a similar stage. Just sayin...

The Tigers have averaged more than six more wins per season over the past ten years.

I'll revisit in another ten.

Probably the best bullpen arm on the block was moved to Boston for 4 top 30 Red Sox prospects including two in the top 100.

A similar trade, value-wise, by the Twins might be something like Berrios, Polanco, Wheeler and Landa, maybe?

Berrios and Polanco may have similar rankings as the Boston guys, but they are much closer to MLB, so they really aren't equivalent value.

Yeah, it's not an ideal comparison but close enough for government work, as my dad used to say.

I just don't agree that "there will always be another prospect." So should we just trade away Gordon, Javier, Gonsalves, Jay, Polacios, and Stewart now because we'll just get more prospects like them soon?

My point with the Tigers is that if they hadn't gone out and spent some serious cash, they would be in serious trouble because they don't have very many players with starter potential in their minor leagues. I don't see the Twins spending as freely as the Tigers (or Yankees) that we would be able to trade away good prospects and have long lasting success. Great franchises (Cardinals and Giants) have sustained success by replenishing from within

It was a LOT to give up for a RP IMO, but Margot to me seems a lot closer to a Billy Hamilton type then a true 5 tool player type.

NTM the Red Sox are a team that is basically going to always be in win now mode, it has worked for them very recently (last to first), they have an overall nice looking team and good pieces, so I totally see where they are coming from.

They can always get more prospects in a year if they fall out of it and can simply trade Kimbrel again.

Also if the BoSox go out and get Price or Cueto, suddenly the move looks not nearly as bad IMO.

Either way though, it's a great trade for the Padres IMO, they aren't ready to compete in 2016 and likely 2017, and they get some nice prospects in return.
