Souhan on Park

Not fishing, just thinking out loud.

Here's the math. If the Twins sign Park and keep Plouffe, then Miguel Sano is an outfielder in 2016. If Sano is an outfielder in 2016, then 3 of these 5 -- Rosario, Hicks, Arcia, Buxton, Kepler -- will not play in MLB in 2016. And 2017 presents the same logjam.

And to think the Twins want to sign Shane Robinson!

Others have suggested that Park's signing is a prelude to further moves.  I think your math suggests likewise.  Having any of the five you listed (outside of Arcia, anyway)  on the bench would be waste -- the Twins know that.  They also probably know that Plouffe really won't fetch much.  Rosario, Kepler, Hicks are much worthier trade assets, perhaps (I hope) in pursuit of a top of the rotation starter.

I know you are fishing for someone to bite here but.......

Buxton 22

Sano 23

Rosario 24

Hicks 26

May 26

Escobar 27

Gibson 28

Not to mention Kepler 23 and Berrios 22.

That's your core.

If we want something of value, we have to give up something of value.  Plouffe won't net much, if anything. (Not good enough for contenders to deal for, too expensive for rebuilders). Rosario/Kepler/Hicks would be traded NOT to make room for Plouffe, but because they could obtain a far more valuable piece in exchange.

If we ever want to acquire an actual Ace, we'll have to give up valuable assets, having Plouffe in the fold enables the Twins to make such a trade without affecting the on field performance of the team in the near future.

No one is suggesting Plouffe for an ace. It's Plouffe for something of value.

The roster shapes up much better when Plouffe is no longer in the equation and this is the year to maximize whatever value we'd get for him.

Not sure why trading someone is such an urgent matter. If Park and Kepler are in Triple A to start the season, the main reason to trade Plouffe is to get help in the bullpen or catcher. If the Twins could sign a catcher and decent reliever (perhaps a big IF), Plouffe can DH, play 3B and 1B or play right field. If there are no injuries to Buxton, Hicks, Rosario, Sano, Plouffe, Mauer AND Kepler and Park are ready for prime time (and healthy) in May, then someone's really gotta go. That could wait until the May - July to shop the right person.

On kind of a side note -- I'm not convinced we can assume Hicks is an every day player. I hope so, but not sold.

Just my two cents, but I am in the boat that they don't have to trade anyone at the moment.  I am excited at the fact that we are starting to have a roster of talent that we were hoping for 3-4 years ago.  There have been names dropped as far as tradable assets from Dozier, Plouffe, Hicks...all which could net us something of value.  Granted some of our pieces will return better value than others if we decide to go down that route.  I haven't been a fan of Weiters but I am starting to warm up to the idea of it even giving up the pick.  The Twins will still have a second, a comp pick at 74 for not signing Kyle Cody, and a pick in the competitive balance round B.  I know those are great picks but it would help if we were to go down the route of signing a FA tied to a qualifying offer.

I tried to use their 2016 year ages and i think I nailed them all.

There's not much 3rd base talent available in free agency and this should make Plouffe more valuable in a trade. As for Rosario, he's the only left side hitter with any power. It makes no sense to think of Mauer as anything but a .265 hitter with minimal power. That could change, but until it does we need to assume that last year is who he is. That isn't all bad either, but it isn't all star. I just do not see Sano to the outfield right now. He's coming off 1/2 a season and still has much learning to do. I can't imagine the Twins burdening him with the additional task of learning right field.
