When did Mitch Garver retire? There is a catcher in the AFL with the identical name. What are the odds?

Some of us thought pretty highly of Tyler Grimes when he turned into a catcher, like Mitch Garver ;) Grimes was drafted in that season and retired.

This is probably a good reminder how tough it really is to make it although some will probably spin it as the Twins suck.

Boyd was #55 overall in his draft (a supp first pick)  A bunch of previous #55's included - LeVon Washington, Tommy Joseph, Destin Hood, Nick Hadadone, Brett Anderson, Zach Simons, Billy Buckner, Todd Jennings, Dave Bush, Preston Larrison Brian Tallet, Jay Perez, Tim Lemon, Brandon Parker, Chuck Abott.

Todd Helton and a guy named Bert Blyleven were #55s as well.

Some players pan out and some do not, but part of the issue here is that the Twins have been scouting Boyd for years.  He is from Fort Myers.  For this one, yes, they should have known better and checked into what he does outside of the diamond.  They had people on the ground...

If his parents didn't know...........

Yeah, I don't think that predicting drug issues for a player is really something you can anticipate. It's obviously not something that is going to come out in pre-draft discussions unless he gets arrested or something happens. He was a pitcher throwing 97 out of high school before the draft. I don't have any problem with the pick. When I saw him this spring, it was clear he had put all of the weight back on. The drug situation was obviously a problem.

It didn't work. Definitely not worth getting overly upset about. Unfortunate, but that's how the draft is.

According to the official Kernels' transactions.  Another former 1st rounder just cannot make it.  Details here.

Thrylos... where did you see that Matt Summers was released? I hadn't seen that one yet. I know Gruver was released in September.

I thought he was last month.  Could be wrong.

I haven't seen it. He'd be a candidate for that, but I don't know. Throws hard. He's been hurt a lot the last couple of years.

In baseball the draft is much more of a crapshoot than in the other three major North American team sports. There are many 22-year-olds who come out of college looking good but turn out to already have peaked. And when you are drafting 17-year-olds it is even more difficult to guess how that player will progress by age 25 or so. There's a significant luck component there.

Should the Twins scouting department become stalkeresque when it comes to pick #55 in the draft?

Is it asking too much for all prospective draftees to wear ankle bracelets for one year before the draft?

Hudson's situation obviously is disappointing, but I'll just say that he always treated me well, as a member of the media. He was friendly toward me and I hoped for a better resolution for him. I wish him the best going forward.

I talked to him after a start in Cedar Rapids in 2013. He was very nice, honest, etc. I don't think he's a bad guy at all. He just had a couple of issues that he wasn't able to get past. Hopefully he will be able to at some point.

yeah, unless they knew in advance, it's pretty hard to say that they should have known about drug issues.  I've known a number of people who have used them.  Some are pretty obvious, and it would be very easy to say 'you should have known'... others... not so much.  And at 17, it's entirely possible that he wasn't using them and started using them as an adult.  It's sad that he didn't make it, most propsects at his position don't.  I still wish him well and hope he can kick that drug habbit.

Not to get too personal, but you toss out the 'Summers was released' bit in your semi-official role as a reporter, and then your whole rebuttal is... Could be wrong. Not asking everyone to be Washington Post-esque on sourcing (lord knows I don't), but if the whole point of your argument is that the Twins are horrible evaluators of talent/personalities, you shouldn't just make stuff up to emphasize the point (it was made already without adding Summers).

Its not guys like this that surprise me.   Its picking guys like Sano and Kepler at such young ages that do work out (ok too early so might work out is probably more accurate) that surprises me.

Yes, this. It's unfortunate he has/had a drug problem but too many expect the Twins to be omnipresent about some pretty crazy things (including some things yet to happen).

See Santana, Ervin.

If a team hits on their 40-60 pick every second or third year, that's a solid track record. I won't fault the Twins for missing on a guy, particularly under these circumstances.
