if they are going to interpret the rule that way, then bring back the huge collisions, the Pete Rose one, the Bo Jackson one - the new rule protects nobody if you allow Conger to position himself as he did.

We can ask, "What would the call have been if Conger got injured on that play?" MLB would be upset, no?

What if Mauer had barreled into Conger? Would that have been a clearer illustration that Conger was blocking the lane? Does the rule allow the runner to do that if the catcher is there?

Exactly. If Mauer comes in high like an NFL linebacker, Conger (or Mauer) maybe spends the next couple weeks in a hospital. The new rule is supposed to avoid the bone-breaking collisions.

 

The umpires failed everybody on that call.

I don't know. The ball clearly beat Mauer. Perhaps the ruling was that Conger wasn't blocking the plate because Mauer wasn't yet close enough.

I am not admiring the home plate umpire. He blew the call at home, and now he's giving Houston's pitcher a strike zone 3 inches outside to Dozier.

Uncomfortable at first, but I imagine you would get used to it and depending on the chunkiness of it, it might come in handy if you are eating really spicy wings. It will stop the embarrassment of having a runny nose.

When was the last time anybody saw Torii Hunter even swing the bat hard, a month ago? Six weeks? He's swinging like he has no legs and his back is sore. Sit the old man down, put Buxton in there. At least Buxton might beat out a grounder.
