Defense played like a bunch of bad asses. Winfield Jr. is a legit NFL prospect and one helluva player - not just the playmaking ability, but quietly stellar in his role too. It's hard not to look at this schedule and the awful play of Indiana, Illinois, NW, and Nebraska and see an 8 or 9 win team. Vanimal46 and USAFChief 2
stringer bell Verified Member Posted September 16, 2018 Posted September 16, 2018 With all of the disappointments Gopher football has presented in the past half century, I'll put the over/under at 7 and be satisfied with a minor bowl. OTOH, the homer in me wants 9 wins and a pig and ax in the trophy case. USAFChief and TheLeviathan 2

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2018 Posted September 16, 2018 A win at Maryland would be huge. Agreed, I think if they get that a 7 win season is a given. And it's gravy from that point.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 16, 2018 Posted September 16, 2018 After watching Iowa... and seeing the mediocrity of the big ten this year... have to agree 7-9 wins might be within each. Haven't watch Annexstead enough to be confident he can beat big ten teams. This team certainly is taking care of business. They have a nice schedule. I'd be impressed if fleck can go above 500 in conference play this year. If he can accomplish that, next year they might be ready to make a little noise.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted September 16, 2018 Posted September 16, 2018 Once bitten, twice shy.My oldest child will be 15 in March and has never seen the Gophers beat Wisconsin. Fair or not, Fleck will win me over when he beats Wisconsin, and not a moment before. Badsmerf 1
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Rough start to the Big 10 schedule. Lots of missed tackles on defense today.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Seeing the replays... Yikes...
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Night and day difference between today's game and Fresno State.

Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Despite the hype that Fleck and his allied local media tried to pump all preseason, this team just plain old doesn't have the talent to compete with Big 10 teams, not even the ones in the bottom half. Maybe Fleck is a good enough recruiter to change that eventually, but let's not give him credit for something he hasn't done yet. I'd also be more tolerant and open minded of Fleck's style, if he would simply be honest about the process and where they are at in it. I get that he doesn't want to disparage his players, but when he goes out of his way to try to convince everyone that is a talented team, and will be better, then it's fair for me to hold him to that.

All that said, the Gophers are down two legit All-Big 10 caliber running backs. They also had a teammate for many of these players pass away over the weekend due to cancer, so that had to be hard to emotionally deal with. Add in Maryland getting a boost in that they expected to lose staff and/or players this week coming into the game, so they had a rallying point when that didn't happen, and it was really a perfect storm. Not saying this performance was "okay", but it's also not purely based on a talent differential, either.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 Whoever the defensive coordinator is, they need to be fired now. Annexstead floats way too many balls. He has some talent, but they have to get him to stop doing that. They have some young talent. Iowa is not a very good team. Winfield being out is no excuse letting this crappy offense put up 28 points in a half. None.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 Also, the Iowa commentators are dreadful. Away from the tv now, and want to drive into a telephone pole listening to them.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 At some point, just fold the program.....
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 At some point, just fold the program.....Is this the first time you've suggested this?
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 At some point, just fold the program.....Nah. They could do all right in Division II. Mike Sixel 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 Is this the first time you've suggested this?Heh... Good point sorry. I post it about as often as they win.... But I can stop
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 Heh... Good point sorry. I post it about as often as they win.... But I can stopJust giving you grief. I don't think folding the program is the answer. I'm not sure pj fleck is either, but there is enough hope to continue I think. There are just too many issues to beat teams like Iowa. See how the rest of the season plays out.... but if you can't stop anybody on defense you can't win.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 They're just too young and inexperienced to compete this year. Fleck is a good recruiter bringing in good talent so far. Now we need to see if he can coach them up. Otherwise he'll be another Tim Brewster... I drank a little bit of the maroon and gold kool aid after the Fresno State win but I'm right back to my preseason prediction... They're going to have a hard time winning a big 10 conference game.

Getting pounded by Iowa isn't a good sign.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 For some reason, ABC is punishing the PNW, and making us watch Nebraska v Northwestern.....
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 For some reason, ABC is punishing the PNW, and making us watch Nebraska v Northwestern..... Same for me, but it is on FS1 if you have access to that.
