What is the point of getting yourself thrown out of a 5-1 game?

There needn't be one.  He was sticking up for Hicks and telling the home plate umpire what he should have done.

This is it completely. Score doesn't matter at all. Molitor was 100% in the right to do that.

I'm going to take a little different perspective on this one.

After watching the replay, Hicks's bat clearly went well past the front of home plate. If the umpire saw it as I did, there's no reason to check with the guy at 3rd. He made the right call.

It didn't appear to me that Hicks was going to argue and get himself in further trouble after throwing his helmet down.

I'm not going to say that Molitor getting himself tossed made Perk do his best Joe Nathan vs. the Yankees impression. I will say that I thought Molitor's argument was silly and pointless.

Wasn't it 5-4?

Nope, 5-1. Yanks made it 5-4 the top of the next inning.

Escobar never should have been playing 3rd to begin with, he sucks in the field. What is the point of having Sano on the major league team if you refuse to ever play him at 3rd?

I would assume it's because Sano's injury wasn't healed enough for him to field...

The thing that confused me the most was batting our inferior players in the 8th then "defensive substituting" in the 9th with better hitters. I assume this was covered in the game thread but it's too painful for me to look through.

Yes, I recall another poster was all over it, predicting the Twins would send those guys out to hit even before the inning started.

According to today's Strib Nelson baited Molitor to come out onto the field by saying he couldn't hear what Molitor was saying and then immediately ejected him when he left the dugout. And beyond that Molitor was not arguing the call, but was just saying that Nelson should have gotten help on the call. Based on that Molitor should not have been ejected.

I just hate seeing our favorite 9 lose such winnable games like this. The entire tide of the game changed once Molly got ran.

I'd argue that the tide of the game changed because of the bases-loaded strikeout which was followed by Milone getting hit hard in the 7th inning. Molitor had nothing to do with either of those two things.

Please read the rule book once a swing is called a strike there is NO appeal, none. The play is over!

This has been beaten to death by Dick and others all year without knowing the rule. There is nothing in the rule book that says the bat has too cross the plate or the hitter must break his wrists, it's weather the umpire judges that the batter swung at the ball. It's his call and once he says he swung the play is over, no appeal. There can only be an appeal on a ball call, asked for by the defense.

If it depends on the weather then the rule wording needs to be sharpened up a bit, IMO.
