New Twins fan from Rochester

Hi everyone, I am a new Twins fan currently living in Rochester NY, home of the AAA Red Wings. I have been a casual baseball fan since I was a kid (now 28) but never really felt a connection to another team. I moved to Rochester last month and took my son (5 yr old) to a Red Wings game and I have to say was one of the most memorial events in my life.

That being said, I noticed alot of other fans wearing Twins gear as well as Twins gear being sold in the Red Wings team store and then realized Rochester was the Twins AAA affliate. I then felt an instant connection to the Twins.

Now I have a few questions about the team that I'm sure many of you can answer.

How are Twins fans toward new fans from outside the area like myself?

Which players tend to be the fan favorites and top up and comers?

Do Twins fans tend to follow the Red Wings at all?

Are there any books you all would recommend to get an indepth look at the Twins history?

Who are the players to watch on the Wings that could make the jump to majors? A few guys that stuck out to me at the Wings games I have attended were Oswaldo Arcia, Danny Ortiz, Jorge Polanco, and Michael Tonkin

Finally, I don't want to seem like I'm jumping on the bandwagon. As a Buffalo Bills and Sabres fan I can assure you I will stick with the team through the good times and bad. Lots of bad times for the Bills/Sabres lol. Cheers!

First off, welcome aboard, we welcome all fans here.

Yes, some of us most rabid fans follow all of the minors associated with the Twins

I would say fans here are most interested in Berrios and Polanco. More so Berrios though.

Welcome.

Definitely spend some time in the minor league forum. There's also an adopt a prospect forum where you can follow your favorite RedWings.

As for Wings players.... Arcia, Meyer, Polanco, and Berrios are the guys that would be considered to have the most potential, but anyone there is really a phone call away at that point depending on org need and 40 man space.

Books? Tom Kelly wrote one about the 1991 world series. I can think of a couple movies... Little Big League and Major League 3... Oh wait, yeah those won't help with the history :)

I should note that Twins Daily will have several publications worth reading over the course of the year as well. Stick around here and you'll see those items promoted.

Welcome to Twins Daily!

The Twins are starting to see some of the young minor league guys show up on the major league team now, so some of the favorites are starting to change.

Some of the new favorite newer player are Brian Dozier (fan favorite for the last two or three years), Byron Buxton (on the DL now, but you'll probably get a chance to see him in Rochester as he works his way back up), and Miguel Sano (rookie that Twins fans have been wanting to see for the past few years).

There is documentary where Sano is one of the main subjects.  So that gives you a little background about him.

Next year, there should be a good group coming up to Rochester for you as well.

Welcome.  We love new fans.  And don't take offense at anything that may get said a little differently -- it is all in good fun.

If you look at the minor league forums, you'll see that there is intense interest in the Red Wings and in the rest of the Twins minor league affiliates.  When you've had a chance to  see them a little more, I'd love your impression of manager Mike Quade.

There are a number of Twins history books out.  I just can't think of titles but John Bonnes (one of the site owners has also been writing a series on the history).  I know they have titles in them.  I'll try to find one of those threads (caution:  I'm bad with the search mechanism).

Have a great time on the site.  There's lots to read and lots of points of view.

Thanks for the welcome aboards guys!

dinger - I promise I'm not a spy lol.

twinssouth - I was actually born and rasied in Atlanta (Clayton County) so that's good to know Twins fans are all over. I plan on going to atleast 5 or 6 more Red Wings games this season, so atleast now I will know who to really start watching.

Fan favorites include Brian Dozier (All-Star 2B), Glen Perkins (All-Star reliever and local kid made good), Trevor Plouffe (long-ago first-round draftee who turned into a solid 3B after seemingly years not really standing out in the minor-league wilderness) and Torii Hunter (veteran outfielder who returned to MN, his first team, as a free agent.)

A rather divisive erstwhile fan favorite is Joe Mauer (1B, former C) who switched positions after a concussion left him at too-high risk playing behind the plate. He's no longer the hitter he was, he plays a position with a lot of great hitters around the league, he makes a lot of money, and he's also a locally born-and-raised guy, which adds to the divisiveness somehow.

The team's two best minor-league prospects over the last couple years have both made the majors this year- Sano and Buxton, as described above. Sano seems reasonably likely not to see the minors again except for injury rehab, but Buxton may make another pass through the minors (and will need injury rehab, as he's on the disabled list now.)

Hope you and your kid enjoy the Wings!

Thanks for all the info so far guys. One other question. What is the best and cheapest way to watch the Twins play since I don't get any of their games on tv.

There really is no 'cheap' if you want regular games. Occasionally the Twins might be a MLB game of the day and be seen on the MLB channel, or, hmm, maybe even on ESPN. But that's more rare than occasional. And who knows, maybe they'll show up on a FOX broadcast in your area? Just gotta keep checking the listings.

Otherwise ... not on the cheap ... you can get an MLB premium subscription from mlb.com ... not sure what the yearly is up to these days. Or, maybe your cable/dish service providers have Extra Innings. Again, you'd have to check with your local provider to see what the costs are.

I'm in Chicago ... so I'm a little closer than Rochester ... and I pay to see the Twins on television.

Welcome from about 4 hrs S from there.  Trying to answer your questions:

-Twins' fans are great towards Twins' fans anywhere.  The Twins themselves do not think that Twins' fans exist outside MN.

-As far as History goes, the Twins' franchise was one of the AL founding franchises and started in Washington as the Senators; moved to MN in 1961.   Lots of books to read out there, but Shirly Povich's Senators book is an excellent place to start for the early days, unfortunately there are not any books that good for the MN years.  Thorney's Minnesota Twins' Baseball is pretty good, but synoptic.  Arguably, the best book written about the Twins is for the 1965 World Series team, Cool Of The Evening: The 1965 Minnesota Twins by Jim Thielman.

- Good eye for picking up players.  Arcia, Polanco and Tonkin have been in the majors, Ortiz is an interesting guy who is getting better every season.   Arcia and Polanco will be up again this season.  Likely Achter.  Not so sure about Tonkin.

- Top up and comers are Miguel Sano, Jorge Polanco and Byron Buxton (in my book)

- Some of us follow the minors.  I actually watch the Red Wings play occasionally

Nice to have Twins' fans on the east coast!

MLB.tv   ($120 a season for every single game, or 75 cents a game.)

If you can love the Sabres and the Bills after all those teams have been through you're a natural born Twins fan! Welcome to the brotherhood (and sisterhood)!

Thats what I figured would be my best best. Ive heard every now and then they offer pretty good discounts or promotions. Guess ill just have to keep my eyes open. I have time warner cable and their MLB package is alot more than that.

Haha, I don't know if that's a bad thing or good thing lol

Well if you're in upstate NY I'd guess Yankee games are broadcast on basic cable/satellite and it just so happens they play the atwins the next three games.

You are correct, watching the game right now!

We're Minnesotans. We'll be superficially nice, a bit standoff-ish, and offer you hotdish if you stick around long enough.

Which players tend to be the fan favorites and top up and comers?

You've missed a few of the best players. Jose Berrios is the bee's knees. Expect to see Byron Buxton on a rehab stint and don't miss watching him play. Seriously. It's like watching some creation out of a SkyNet lab.

Do Twins fans tend to follow the Red Wings at all?

Most don't. Here at Twins Daily, there are some posters who can tell you where the players in Rochester ate that day.

Are there any books you all would recommend to get an indepth look at the Twins history?

Yes. http://www.amazon.com/Minnesota-Twins-Baseball-Hardball-History/dp/1626193819

Who are the players to watch on the Wings that could make the jump to majors? A few guys that stuck out to me at the Wings games I have attended were Oswaldo Arcia, Danny Ortiz, Jorge Polanco, and Michael Tonkin.

Arcia is a beast but he'll be back in Minnesota soon. Polanco had a cup of coffee, will be back at some point. Like I said earlier, watch Berrios pitch before he's gone and keep an eye out for Buxton's rehab stint.

Finally, I don't want to seem like I'm jumping on the bandwagon. As a Buffalo Bills and Sabres fan I can assure you I will stick with the team through the good times and bad.

We're Minnesotans. We don't care about bandwagons. We care about hotdish.
