I was just reading that the Twins have still not signed Kyle Cody. Do they have enough cash left to sign him or is he going to return to school?

It is because something turned up in his physical.  If we lose him it would be a bummer, but we'd still get the 74th pick next year in compensation, so not a total wash.

so if they found something wrong in the physical you would think he might be inclined to sign at a discount to his expected bonus. I won't feel bad if they come away with another pick next year.

Well, it's not great to have a year w/o a 2nd round pick, and w/o a sandwich pick.......it creates a bit of a hole in the timing of the pipeline.

Hopefully he's healthy, and they can come to an agreement.

According to some things I've seen on twitter in the last half an hour, he still might sign before the deadline. Jeremy said its 50-50 at this point.

I'd rather have the draft pick next year. Probably will be a deeper draft and when was the last time a 2nd round pick made a difference?

I guess Berrios could be but he was almost 1st round.

Otherwise it's been Luke Bard, Eades, and a whole bunch of blah

Jeremy explained the situations really well here earlier this week.

Well, it doesn't say what is wrong with him.  The only real hint is:

"Though Cody isn't physically injured, whatever turned up caused the team to drop their offer."

Hmmmm......

Bard and Berrios were technically 1st rounders, they were just supplemental picks. The only 2nd rounders I can remember making an impact were Slowey, Baker, and Crain. I think Swarzak was a 2nd rounder as well. Basically it's been a while for us although there's still hope with a few of the more recent guys

So I guess Rosario and dozier don't count as second rounders, but they have made an impact. If you're taking pitching then he's the probability of him becoming an ace is low, but impact players are found all over the draft.

I was never much a fan of the Cody pick anyways, if he doesn't sign at least we get the pick back next year and the crop might be better than it was this year

I really disliked the pick and basically shut down following the draft at all. I think he could be good, certainly, but I found it odd to pick him there. And lo and behold, something is up with his elbow or shoulder . . .

He falls under the category of electric stuff, poor control, and odd mechanics along with sub par results. It would have taken a lot of work to get him to be a MLB player and the Twins have not had much success in that department. I would have much rather gone after Austin Rei or Matuella (although he was expensive)

We are talking about pick #74.  It is a crapshoot at that point with a lot of players that are never successful at AA much less the majors.  I'm okay taking an upside pick (electric stuff) at that point but not signing him doesn't create a hole in the pipeline.

This times 20.  Once you hit the latter part of the draft, you start running out of sure things.  Go for upside at this point.  Cody was talked about as a potential 1st rounder due to a very high ceiling. It didn't work out for him this year (hence the fall) and his medicals might provide a bit more of a clue as to what is going on.  I'd have liked to have had him in the fold, but understandably, he's betting on himself.  Knowing what he's going to pay in taxes and what minor leaguers make, that's not a bad option.  That money will be gone in no time.

Not having a 2nd round pick, or the number 74 pick does nothing to the pipeline at all? Why bother even picking guys then?

One, this is a protected pick.  They get it back next year in what is being talked about as a stronger draft.

Second, I think you need to be a bit more realistic.  Very few guys picked that low even make it.  Think about that for a sec.  Everything at this point is a crap shoot.  You pick guys here because some will make it and even the org filler has value.  If you expect the Twins to hit on every pick (or even most), you're being unrealistic b/c no one does.

Yup, and having two less guys in the pipeline means there are less darts thrown at the board, meanie your odds are lower. I don't get how anyone can feel like not having two of your top three picks is irrelevant. ....but we have killed this topic, so I am pretty much out now.

I misunderstood you Mike.  Apologies.

ha, no pain to me....really, I am just here to chat about baseball, there are only 2 posters that can get under my skin at all anymore.....

You did nothing wrong, and my statements here have been pretty strong, and are arguable, frankly. The fact it is a protected pick helps, but given the randomness of post round 1 guys working out, losing out on 2 higher picks is a bummer to my hopes for the system. But I can see where others would disagree (and admittedly, I didn't love the Jay pick.....).

You are drastically overstating the hole in the pipeline.  They lost a dart.  They didn't lose an entire draft or two.

They have no 2nd round pick either.....and no where did I say it ruined the farm or any other straw man. I said it hurt. Feel free to disagree

This was the 2nd rd pick.  They lost a competitive balance pick for Santana and they haven't had one of those before.

I didn't use a straw man.  I used your exact words - hole in the pipeline.  This is pick #77.  I have about the same odds of hitting a dartboard while drunk and blindfolded as pick 77 becoming a valuable MLB player.  And they get to throw that dart next year so it's the delay of a year for picks that need 3-4 years to make it through the system anyway.  This is almost a trivial issue.
