If this was the final election in which rural and Rust Belt Americans end up playing a pivotal role, then they picked a strange candidate for their last hurrah, perhaps to their eventual buyer's remorse.

And while i completely agree that the demographics favor the Democratic party in the future, I'm not entirely sure that Democrats fully appreciate the long term negative effects on America brought about by the alienation of rural and Rust Belt Americans and the erosion of their place in our nation.

In any case, the nation has survived clunker presidents before, and it can again if we put in the work.

That's the key. Too much complacency in too many. I think we've just kind of been drifting along for a while now, taking a helluvalot for granted ... just letting the boat steer the course instead of us steering the course. And it's not going to be an easy course to correct.

Will Clinton win the popular vote and Trump win the EC.  That's what the NY Times thingy says. (/hattip BeenHazy)

Well, that would ensure that the election isn't really OVER over tonight, just that the balloting stops and the 'rigged system' rhetoric reaches an unbearable volume.

I'm too disgusted with Americans right now. I'm building a wall.

I hear countries to the south provide cheap labor. Perhaps you can get us to build that wall for you...as long as we're on your side when it's completed.

Pfft.  Don't bother.  Do you really think liberals can find their way through the woods or paddle a canoe.  Think, man, think!  Work on the bomb shelter instead!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I trust that you're familiar with the difference between a majority and a plurality, yes? ;)

Not that it should matter, but I didn't vote for either of these two knuckleheads. I'm one of the idiots who went to the trouble of voting but threw away my presidential vote on a third party candidate.

Ok, the most votes then. Is that better? Doesn't seem better, but good luck regardless.

Hey ... I can paddle a canoe just fine, tyvm. And can find my way through the woods with a compass and a map.

Meh, the bombs are in North Dakota. Trump wouldn't be getting his money's worth firing them at me.

Snares though, that's an idea.

Totally kidding.  I've been to the Boundary Waters enough to know that two thirds of the people there are filthy hippies and geefed up teachers who vote exclusively Democrat/Green.

Aaaand I'm kidding again.  It's helping me take some of the edge off a distinctly unpleasant evening.  I'll try to behave.

Well....****.

This sucks no doubt, but I have faith that things that after a few really ****ty months (up until Jan/Feb) next year, the country can eventually get back on track.

Short term there is going to be some pains, but long term? We should be fine, in two years we take back the senate (and get close with the house) and in 4 years we get back the presidency.

I feel really bad for the folks looking to retire in the next 2-3 years though :(

Maybe your humor tonight will play better on the Falvey discussion threads?

My humor playing?  That would be a first.  Are they using N2O over there tonight?

Spare me the dramatics.

It sucks, it really does, Trump is a vile piece of ****, and likely the worst POTUS we have seen in quite a long time, but it's America, we are a democracy and aren't a dictatorship, I disagree with a lot of my GOP brethren on a lot of issues, but the POTUS only has so much power, the more reasonable ones won't let Trump screw up things...to much, right? And the best part? We can vote his ass out in 4 years anyways!

Buck up, Barky.

1.  It's not over.

2.  However much you may dislike Pence, he's a competent manager and sane human being. He's going to eventually end up acting as the real president when Trump loses interest, except for State of the Union addresses and visits by Super Bowl winners.

3. Trump's hands are probably to small to press any of the really dangerous buttons in the Oval Office.

Thanks for your scathing reply. I don't have what you are asking for, since you thought I was serious. You do not like me and are being a jerk. Straight up.

Bark, you need to just back down a little. I don't know what's in your mind about what I think of you, but from this response I can tell you you're wrong. I wasn't being scathing and I know many 'joke' about moving to Canada but a lot aren't joking. Own up to your own stuff.

I'm picturing you and a business partner working as freelance trappers of American illegals in the workplace...

Is it almost better to lose now? Unless something big changes in the next four years now, whoever wins is probably only a four term president. Can the elderly SC justices hold on four more years?

Ginsburg should have resigned when she was asked to.

I've got to eat a lot of crow about what I thought I'd see tonight.  No matter the called result; there's enough close races, that litigation is likely and we'll be in doubt about the true result for some time, I imagine. In any case, I underestimated the support for Trump by a wide margin.  For my part, I watched this election like a bizarre accident happening right and front of me, critiqued from afar, and I didn't do much to stop it.

For me this election died at the conventions.  It was like the opposite of this year's World Series. Instead of knowing I'd be happy with either outcome...

Let's hope that this all works out for the best. The following parable gives me some comfort.

One day in late summer, an old farmer was working in his field with his old sick horse. The farmer felt compassion for the horse and desired to lift its burden. So he left his horse loose to go the mountains and live out the rest of its life.

Soon after, neighbors from the nearby village visited, offering their condolences and said, "What a shame.  Now your only horse is gone.  How unfortunate you are!. You must be very sad. How will you live, work the land, and prosper?" The farmer replied: "Who knows? We shall see".

Two days later the old horse came back now rejuvenated after meandering in the mountainsides while eating the wild grasses. He came back with twelve new younger and healthy horses which followed the old horse into the corral.

Word got out in the village of the old farmer's good fortune and it wasn't long before people stopped by to congratulate the farmer on his good luck.  "How fortunate you are!" they exclaimed. You must be very happy!"  Again, the farmer softly said, "Who knows? We shall see."

At daybreak on the next morning, the farmer's only son set off to attempt to train the new wild horses, but the farmer's son was thrown to the ground and broke his leg.  One by one villagers arrived during the day to bemoan the farmer's latest misfortune.  "Oh, what a tragedy!  Your son won't be able to help you farm with a broken leg. You'll have to do all the work yourself, How will you survive? You must be very sad".  they said.  Calmly going about his usual business the farmer answered, "Who knows? We shall see"

Several days later a war broke out. The Emperor's men arrived in the village demanding that young men come with them to be conscripted into the Emperor's army.  As it happened the farmer's son was deemed unfit because of his broken leg.  "What very good fortune you have!!" the villagers exclaimed as their own young sons were marched away. "You must be very happy." "Who knows? We shall see!", replied the old farmer as he headed off to work his field alone.

As time went on the broken leg healed but the son was left with a slight limp. Again the neighbors came to pay their condolences. "Oh what bad luck. Too bad for you"!  But the old farmer simply replied; "Who knows? We shall see."

As it turned out the other young village boys had died in the war and the old farmer and his son were the only able bodied men capable of working the village lands. The old farmer became wealthy and was very generous to the villagers. They said: "Oh how fortunate we are, you must be very happy", to which the old farmer replied, "Who knows? We shall see!"

But she's so cute when she's feisty! She reminds me of the fiery little elementary principal in Kindergarten Cop!

Seriously, though, you're probably right about her from a purely political strategy perspective.

And we're probably in for some more SC fights that will make the nation wish we could replace the current lifetime term/executive nomination system that's about as fair as your two siblings calling the window seats for the entire car trip to Yellowstone and back.
