twinsfan34 Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 One more pick...Cubs...hope they pass on Harrison.
twinsfan34 Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Here we go...foley...harrison...?
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Burdi. Well, we picked him before
twinsin17 Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'd take Marcus Wilson over Monte Harrison but Reid-Foley would be an excellent addition as well. Deep draft!
70charger Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 next 4, Foley, Adams, Harrison, Burdi Booooooooo!
cmb0252 Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Wow, not a fan....especially because I can see the Twins try and convert him to a starter because that has turned out well.....
twinsfan34 Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Well...some feel he could pitch in MLB by this Fall. I just don't like RP/CP as high draft picks. Maybe they want to try him as a starter...have to.
2wins87 Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Would have preferred someone with starting potential, he can throw hard...
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Not a fan. Two years will be wasted trying to make him a starter, then another year while he learns to be int the pen, then they will commit to him as a reliever. Just not the approach I would take. It does not work to make relievers into starters. This is not some market inefficiency to be exploited.
Parise11 Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 great pick. Our Chapman. You don't find many guys in college throwing 103 ever...
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 They aren't going to make him a starter. He's a power set-up guy and will eventually take over when Perkins is gone.
drock2190 Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Future relief pitcher it looks like. meh
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 They aren't going to make him a starter. He's a power set-up guy and will eventually take over when Perkins is gone. The team that won't promote relievers now, and has tried for two years to make obvious relievers into starters is going to abandon their strategy? That would be nice....
twinsfanstreif Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I like Burdi, he doesn't have the upside as one of the HS guys but we might have not had the money to sign one of them and who know's what Gordon's demands were. Burdi pitches 100+ and he could help us out this year or beginning of next year, could be much worse
InfraRen Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Like the Burdi pick. Guy throws pure gas, and if you can have a rock solid set up guy before Perk, and one that will take over for him when he tails off, why not? Reid-Foley would have been nice too.
70charger Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I can't see passing on Reid-Foley there.
drivlikejehu Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 To pass on guys like Imhof, Reid-Foley, etc., for a relief pitcher, makes zero sense. The Twins do not have enough starting pitching depth to take a reliever #46 overall. Unforced errors like this are why the Twins have gotten so little out of their drafts for much of the past decade.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 A lot of mocks had Burdi going #21 to Detroit. Nothing wrong with getting him here.
twinsin17 Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Burdi...hmmmm... His stuff is so good reports are he could pitch in the bigs right after signing. With Perkins locked up for cheap, is a dominant setup man worth an early 2nd rounder? Will we try and convert him to a SP?
TKGuy Provisional Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Baseball drafts are crapshoots, but guys who throw 98-100 are worth a risk
Guest USAFChief Guests Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'm not much of a draftnic but I like this pick. Big arms are always nice to have. Just let him stay in the pen and he'll be in the majors quickly.

For what it's worth, Law had him ranked #56, but again- this pick makes no sense for the Twins. They are not a contender who logically could prefer short-term help over longer-term upside.

I think he's just a good value guy there but I don't think the Twins see him as a starter. We drafted him 3 years ago. The Twins like his stuff. I think he'll end up being a set up guy by next season.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 The Twins do not have enough starting pitching depth to take a reliever #46 overall. In the lower minors, they actually do. So much so they can't find a rotation spot for Stephan Gonsalves and just now have made room for Thorpe and Romero.

They are not a contender who logically could prefer short-term help over longer-term upside. Why wouldn't he be part of the future teams? We have control of him for 6 years at a minimum. The team should be a contender in a few years with the Sano/Buxton foundation. Burdi profiles as an easy replacement for Perkins at the back end of the pen. A lot of the draft guru's had Burdi as the best relief arm in the draft. That's not a bad pick at #46.
70charger Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'm overreacting. I don't really hate it, but I still would have preferred Reid-Foley. Hey, maybe we'll finally get rid of Matt Guerrier?
