Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Here's the rule, from page 8 here:http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf No Club shall be scheduled, or rescheduled if practicable, to play more than 20 consecutive dates without an open day. A rained- out game may be rescheduled to an open date in the same series, or to an open date at the end of the same series, if (a) the open date is a road off-day for the visiting Club, and ( the rescheduling does not result in the home team playing more than 24 consecutive dates without an open day
JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Here's the rule, from page 8 here:http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf Thanks for posting that. So, does "dates" mean "days" not "games"? It also uses the term "if practicable" so that gives some extra wiggle room. The rule would definitely seem to favor double-headers even if that causes the team to play more than 20 games between open dates.

sampleSizeOfOne Verified Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Stay tuned for Tripleheader Thursday! Would that mean they get to call up a 27th player? More realistically, who do folk figure they'll call up for the 26th player?

Unless Deduno is ready to slot into a start, they'll need another SP to avoid a short rest situation beginning Sunday.
JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Nolasco and Pelfrey are starting on Thursday .... so I would guess that Deduno gets a spot start (and maybe it won't be so "spot" in the long run).

I'm not sure, but the weather doesn't look too promising for Wednesday, as well. They'll make every effort to play on Thursday, because making up three games to an NL opponent would be difficult to impossible. I would suspect if they don't play tomorrow, it will be Gibson pitching the afternoon game with Nolasco facing his ex-mates in the nitecap. As far as a 26th player, Parmelee would have been a good choice but he's not on the 40-man, nor is Bernier. Probably a pitcher, even though one won't be a necessity.

Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 The previous morning. Inside the TARDIS. Can't wait to see a capacity crowd there.
Halsey Hall Verified Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I really object to split doubleheaders. But the FO wants the money. Just play the doubleheader and give the fans a treat once in awhile. Back in the day doubleheaders were a lot of fun.
sampleSizeOfOne Verified Member Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 If i had to guess at 26th man, might they give Nunez another look-see? Figuring the bullpen to be plenty rested at this point, and not thinking too hard about a 40 man roster move to make Parmelee possible... Was there a point where they have to use an option on Nunez to keep him in AAA? I wasn't paying that close attention when people went over it. But we'll find out soon enough, i'm sure. Anyway, hope the weather clears up to get all the games in!

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I wonder if, theoretically, a player just added to the 40 man roster could be the 26th man without burning an option year...?

I must admit my expectations are low, so hopefully we'll all be pleasantly surprised, continue the debate, and heighten the internal competition for spots, while forcing the issue in getting to the best 5 men for the job in place.
