Numbers probably not as important as "non-competitive at-bats". If a guy looks hopeless more than half the time, it probably is time for them to take a day off. I'm not saying that is the case with Arcia, I just haven't seen enough regular season ball (day games on work days).

He has been both extremes. He has smacked the ball pretty hard at times but also has some bad strikeouts.

Can someone please clarify why Arcia's numbers through 4 games are suddenly relevant when my (Note to Twins) thread was bombarded with posters going out of their way to tell me how irrelevant any numbers are this early in the season?

You are right for the most part, they aren't terribly relevant. Although if Arcia was 6/14 (like Colabello is) and Colabello was 2/18, I would bet Gardy would have Arcia in the starting lineup. Colabello is hot, so he wants him in the lineup. Kubel has started once so far so my guess is he wanted to get him into the lineup. You seem to be getting pretty worked up when we are only five games in. Arcia has more than twice as many AB as Kubel and would be 3X if Kubel hadn't played the long game in Chicago. By the end of the year, Arcia should have 500-550 AB and Kubel around 350 since he will most likely be the primary DH against RHP.

For the linguists here--"grey" or "gray", what's the difference?

The spelling. Duh.

I think they are just as irrelevant.

And I wasn't joking about the cold and Arcia. I also think that nothing is keeping Gardy from putting Colabello in the lineup right now.

Yeah, the hoods he and Escobar are wearing sure give the impression they don't much like the weather in the northern US this time of year.

It wasn't between gray or grey ... it was between goose or gray/grey duck

Let Kubel play if it leads to the Twins winning the game. I want to see a winning team. After three losing seasons, I would rather see the Twins win with veterans, than see them lose with prospects.

So would everyone. :)

Unfortunately these are only two of the six options.

The others are:

lose with veterans

play about .500 with veterans

play about .500 with prospects

win with prospects

Perhaps he has a, it's going to be 36 degrees today kind of sore wrist?

You'd think if that was the case they'd just say he has a tight hammy or something, rather then get everyone worried by saying it s the same spot on the wrist that troubled him last year.

It seems nothing can go right this year for our prospects/2nd year guys. Lets hope that Gibson, Pinto, Meyer can avoid the curse.

What is the difference between the two spellings? According to Google Answers, the two words have almost the same meaning in all cases, and g-r-a-y is simply an American derivation of the original spelling g-r-e-y. According to Flak Magazine, the difference can be chalked up to the same happenstances that led to organize/organise and judgement/judgment. Apparently e.e. cummings and Prince are partly to blame as well. However, among the several hypotheses for why gray and grey exist, I believe the following to be the best:

Gray is a color.

Grey is a *colour*.

I'm sure that detail is the result of good reporting by Berardino. I doubt the Twins volunteered many details when they first announced it to the press.

Maybe it's just a matter of what's more plausible, I mean Arcia hurting a hammy? That would involve running.

If you're being serious, grey is considered the British spelling. Its a bit more complicated than that as each is an acceptable variant in each place, but most Commonwealth countries, including Canada, prefer grey. We Americans prefer gray.

Of course, we could just chuck the gray/grey duck thing and play Maverick, Maverick, Goose.

Brennaman: "Chris Carabello."

Nice to know the national announcers have done their homework.
