What are the upcoming 40 man roster moves going to look like?

Twins Video

I will spare everyone my rambling nonsensical, fantastical prognostications.  Just a simple question...

the Twins need to make 2 roster moves to clear space on the 40 man roster.

Who ya got?  Who would YOU move? and who do you think THEY will move?

40-Man Roster | Minnesota Twins (mlb.com)

I am not sure if I have attached the link to the current 40 man roster correctly, as I have never tried to do a link before,  but what are your thoughts?

Mine you ask?

For once I have no clue what they would do and more importantly no clue what I would do. I am nto educated on all of our releivers, but I would assuem we either signed them or traded for them for a reason. but we cannot move TWO position players, so one relief pitcher has to get DFA'd or traded.

As far as position players go...

Trading Kepler seems like a move, but even I am starting to think might not be a bad idea to keep him around, and i think his value will only increase as we get closer to season, or in season, and neither Santana, nor the pitcher we signed is worth trading low on Kepler. Sadly I think I see an od man out in Gordon. I dotn see us moving Castro, Bubba Thompson has a specialized skillset, I I could see us cuttign bait of Larnach as well though.  IF we could get a marginal prospect for Larnach he would make sense (although I am still a fan of his)

Bottom line ilooking at IF it is not a starter, Could trade Farmer, but after moving Polanco he seems a bit more secured.. Martin is listed as an IF, and he has too much versatility and cheap. and Miranda and Severino still have the upside, the dreaded "potential". SO we move an OF.

Not Buxton, Not Wallner, not Castro, not Martin (see also IF) nto Kirilloff (who is now listed as OF and if that is accurate that makes Larnach even MORE disposable), Possibly Kepler, but again not the best time to trade out of necesity.. No tRodriguez and not Thompson.

That leaves Larnach and Gordon as the only options.

But there I broke my promise and rambled...

WHo do YOU see gettign moved?

Duarte and Bubba appear to be the most likely candidates. They probably have the best chance to sneak through waivers.

I don’t see Gordon or Balazovic being waived at the moment - the Twins as an organization have invested so much in each of them. Post spring training they could be waived or traded, but I think each will get the chance to earn a spot on the roster over the next 8-9 weeks (or else increase their trade value).

Larnach, Miranda could also be on the block, but both are very important depth pieces going forward.  I’m sure they both would welcome a trade if it gave them the chance to play everyday.

Agreed, After Duarte & Bubba, they'll give Gordon, Balazovic, & Larnach one more shot. If they keep Gordon in the OF, he should pass (they might still trade him), Balazovic I have my doubts, Larnach has a lot of potential but if he can't hit the off-speed stuff he's gone, my hope is that he can. Miranda will have to prove himself in AAA & hopes Santana gets hurt. Because even if Miranda outshines Santana, he's still stuck in AAA

I reluctantly agree with the likely choices of Thompson and Duarte. It seems the club likes both guys and they probably have some hope of getting them through unclaimed. Other choices would be the two out-of-options guys on the edge of the 26-man roster--Nick Gordon and Jordan Balazovic.

I don't see either of those guys going unclaimed, Balazovic because of potential and Gordon because of past performance. I wonder if either or both can be traded for similar value with options or for prospects.

Larnach and Miranda can be optioned this year. I would expect both to start their season in St. Paul and both to have chips on their shoulders.

Thompson for sure……..he’s fast………seems to be his top attribute, maybe only attribute?

Staumont - Duarte are the only potential options to release……….Duarte has been with team for a week, so I think he’ll probably get exposed to other clubs. Maybe other clubs roster spots are or have filled & they can hang on to Duarte?

I agree with you.  I think in time Balazovic can be good to really good in the pen it just doesn't feel like that might be this year yet and with no options left it makes it incredibly difficult to slowly work him into a spot at the MLB level.  The FO has always seemed to feel they can find pen help when needed and that it is fungible. Given that philosophy if they could trade Balazovich for a prospect that doesn't need to be added to the 40 man that would be helpful IMO.

Just looking down the road a short ways it looks like one of Canterino, Festa, Ohl, SWR, Raya could replace him on the 40 man anyway.  Might as well cut the cord early as the odds of him being better than any of those 4 seems slim and there are even more arms behind those guys. It's going to be hard for a playoff team to trust that once he is up he can stay up then hang onto a job.

Saying all that it could be a mistake to cut him or move on from him too early.  He was getting guys out at the MLB level, but once the wheels fell off things got bad in a hurry.  Still if there is another team out there that believes in him I think a trade would be a good idea.

I think you stated this before, but Gordon doesn't really have a spot on this team and he needs to stay on and clog the 26 man. What is Gordons potential?  Can he be an 800 OPS bat?  He is a contact type swinger and he was tapping into some power, but he just doesn't seem like more than a 4th outfielder utility type to me.  I do think he can be a good MLB player, but is this a guy you keep and can't replace down the road?  For this years team it feels like it would be better to have Thompson or even Keirsey instead of Gordon as they can be sent up and down, play elite centerfield and can steal bases late in games if needed.  Again I don't like the idea of just giving him away but if they could work out even a marginal trade I would do that.

The Twins have enough young up and coming players that they can afford to lose Gordon and or Balazovich and replace them with young players with options that have as much or more potential than they do..  IMO if they can move on from them they should.

For any position player exposures or drops, I think it boils down to how healthy the CF and 1B spots are. Can Buxton be counted on for some CF duties, or will he clog the DH spot again? Who plays CF then? How do Kirilloff and Miranda look? Miranda certainly looks destined for St Paul to start while recovering from his shoulder procedure, but what if he's absolutely mashing in ST and Kirilloff isn't? Some of this has to be sorted out first, I believe. The Twins have players that are multipositional, but how the CF and 1B spots play out, and possibly how they're performing in the field at LF and 2B, will probably determine which of the UT guys stick.

I agree with a previous post stating that Gordon and Larnach would likely welcome a trade to an organization that can play them.

I know it's probably not likely, but IF they are going to add a right handed bat, and/or (my hope) a playoff level starter, maybe that is why the holdup is for announcing Santana and Jackson?

Is it POSSIBLE they are talking about trading a few 40 man roster guys in a move to bring in a starter?

We have two primary issues with the 40 man roster.  The first is right now as they need to release two players to make room.  For that I would go with Balazovic and Duarte.  Balazovic has had enough time to show what he has to the Twins and I just don't see him in any impactful role.  He is, at best, mop up or long relief.  Why keep him if that is is upside?

The second roster issue will center around spring training performance and any moves the Twins make between now and the start of the season.  That's all guesswork that we have to wait on to see.

The 60 day IL opens up in a few days. If Staumont is still injured he could end up there.

With regards to which players get moved/jettisoned, I have no idea.

But regarding your other question:

“I am not sure if I have attached the link to the current 40 man roster correctly, as I have never tried to do a link before,  but what are your thoughts?”

The link is perfectly attached with the sublimity of an old pro.😀
