Twins Minor League Report (9/3): Aaron Sabato Goes Berzerk
rdehring replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
See Jenkins was the DH last night. Nice 1-4 with a walk and one K after his 3 hit night. And that hit was a double. He has struck out only 7 times in 35 plate appearances. That combined with five walks seems to indicate he is the same hitter in AAA as at the lower levels. Expect he has settled in and will have a nice finish to his season.- 35 replies

Doubt every game will be like last night, but Jenkins seems to be settling in after his first week at AAA. And who is this Jiminez guy down in Fort Myers? Kid is tearing the cover off the ball. Found it interesting that he was at first base last night. He and Tait just might play well together. Has Tait also played at first? Or will he be a DH when not behind the plate?

Excellent article, Nick. And loved the comments. Thanks guys. Don't have an opinion on whether they should try for an extension, whether his agent would agree, or not. But add me to those who believe in the young man and hope he will be a Twin for a long time. Probably a lot longer than I am around to be a Twins fan. Agree that the Twins seem to be developing a group of young players who could become a really good core for the next 5+ years. Jenkins, Keaschall, EmRod (? health), those young catchers who are maybe a year + away, and others. And that doesn't include Lewis or Lee, who both could become very valuable players. How they develop this core and keep them together for more than five years is the job of those smarter than me. Also, those who write the checks. Reading this I kept thinking where would the Twins be had they never signed Correa? What if they had raised their payroll a little every year and never had the big jump and subsequent cuts? Would the fans think better of management? Or better of the owners? Well, that and had they not had any press conferences. But that's all behind us. Kind of like my Dad used to say, "If the dog hadn't stopped to raise his leg, he would have caught the rabbit" So its on to the future.

Everyone has to be excited about those two catchers the Twins got last month. Not certain who we should be most excited about. Tait turned 19 two days ago and is performing well at Hi-A. But Jiminez is tearing the cover off the ball at Fort Myers although I guess we have to consider him a bit old at 19. [Don't know how to do the smiley face as that comment was tongue in cheek.] Only problem is that neither will join the Twins until 2027 at the earliest. That's assuming there is baseball in 2027. In response to your question regarding the Twins soon having seven starting pitchers, I will refer to something I think Tom Kelly once said. "You can never have enough starting pitching."

And who says you can't teach an old dawg a new trick? Now if someone will tell the guys in the front office, maybe they will get more players who actually can run a bit.

Although a bit surprised they moved him this early, am elated. Assuming he has a good month in St. Paul, I can see him making the 2026 opening day roster. If not, have to believe he will be with the Twins by early summer as I believe this is the one player in the organization destined to be a future star. Just look at this kid. The biggest question I have is will he make more playing baseball or with his outside endorsements and marketing deals?
-
Since he was acquired, the vast majority of comments I've seen here are saying he has already failed. How many great players struggled in their first 50-100 at bats? Don't have any interest in researching that but would guess the answer is many or even most. Will agree with your comment that the real dislike for this kid is the fact most or all of us were so upset they traded Louie. As you pointed out, his results at AA and AAA were not only good, but very good. Again without spending a lot of time researching this, expect his numbers were similar to Jenkins, EmRod and Gonzalez. Probably a bit less power than EmRod, but certainly better defense than Gonzalez and maybe EmRod also. As for his age, he got to the Show as quickly as most college draft picks not named Kurtz, Let's give this young man a chance before sending him to the Twins Daily trash can. As for openings in the outfield in 2026, agree that one of Larnach or Wallner will probably be gone before spring training. Probably Larnach. And unless Wallner begins hitting a heck of a lot better than he has this year, he could also be gone by then or next July at the latest.

Thanks for the report, Seth. One of the enjoyable things every morning of late for us Twins fans. Two interesting tidbits today. At least for me. One was Winokur stealing his 24th base. The other, Jenkins putting down a bunt and beating it out. The biggest news was Jenkins moving up to St. Paul following their game yesterday. That will give him a full month of AAA. He should have every opportunity to win a job with the Twins next spring.

You probably should have included Wallner in this discussion as he hasn't performed any better than Larnach. Yes, he hits a few really long home runs and is a local kid. But look at the number of runs he's driven in. Just plain disappointing considering how many home runs he has hit. Also don't think you should have included Miranda as he has been out of the Twins picture for at the last year. Expect both Miranda and Julien will be gone in some manner this off-season. Also expect they will move on from one of Larnach or Wallner. Considering there is still a bit more hope with Wallner, expect it will be Larnach. That will give Wallner and Lewis one more year to prove they merit being part of the Twins future plans. But yes, great look at the sad state of the TWins.

Must disagree a bit with some of the above comments. Doubt that any other prospect will be blocking Jenkins' opportunities when the Twins decide he is ready for the move to Target Field. Yes, there are a couple other fine outfield prospects. But there is only one potential super star, and his name is Walker Jenkins. When I look at this kid and consider his bat, speed and defensive ability I continue to think the next 'Mickey Mantle.' If only he was a switch hitter and could wear #7. When the Twins were playing the A's last week, I kept hearing about that rookie they had who is amongst the league leaders in almost everything. Heard he was a 2024 draft pick and kept thinking, "why can't the Twins ever get a prospect like that?" Although he was drafted out of high school, maybe, please let Jenkins be that player for the Twins. And wouldn't it be nice if the Twins have the #4 overall pick next year and draft the next Nick Kurtz? Was aware of the bonus pick for rookie of the year, but thanks Cody for the description of what it is all about. Appreciated it.

Both Culpepper's caught my eye in today's report, Seth. The pitcher seems to be back to what we expected before his injury and time off. Although the number of walks he is issuing is a bit of a concern. The shortstop seems to be tiring during what I expect is the most baseball he has ever played. Is that a fair understanding of his situation? Tait hasn't turned 19 yet, has he? To be hitting as well as he has in Hi-A while also playing catcher has to be encouraging.

These Three Twins Are Approaching Make-Or-Break Status
rdehring replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Won't disagree that Mathews probably has the highest upside. Just had a thought that he also may be best suited for that late inning relief role. Expect his 96-98mph heater would get another tick or two in late inning relief. Good news is that between this year's trio and another three or four guys on the verge the Twins should have wonderful starting depth next year. Expect they will need to use some of it in the bullpen, or in a trade for the bullpen.- 49 replies

These Three Twins Are Approaching Make-Or-Break Status
rdehring replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't understand how you can even consider having Roden on this list. You state he hasn't shown 'fleeting glimpses' of offense in his career. Did you bother to look at what he did the past two years, mostly at AA and AAA? If you had you would see a player who had an average around .300 or higher with around a .400 OBP and high .800's OPS. Had he been in the Twins organization everyone would be screaming he should be called up. So after roughly 100 big league at bats, that included changing teams, he has failed. I just don't get how anyone can say that. Will agree with SWR. I can see one of the three young Twins starters being in next year's rotation. See another in late inning relief and a third traded. Hopefully for a late inning reliever. Personally, see Matthews best suited for a late relief role and SWR being the player traded. What will happen is anyone's guess. [edit. this assumes none of Lopez, Ryan or Ober are traded.] Will agree with those above who believe Royce has more time to return to the player he can be. Hopefully, he remains healthy for the next month plus and has a healthy off-season to prepare for 2026.- 49 replies

Will be surprised if Abel gets the start for the Saints tonight. TV showed him in the Twins dugout last night in Chicago with today's starter listed as TBD. It's getting to the point that we expect Fedko to have games like last night. Will be shocked when we see an 0-4 with a couple strikeouts. Add me to those above who are curious about Mendez' defense and speed. Have a great weekend, Tom, and thanks for the report.

Debated Mike whether to give you a 'like' or the 'sad.' Did the like but the situation with the Twins is just too bloody sad. Especially for us old guys that don't have that many more seasons to enjoy.

With all the above talk about when/if players arrive, does the likelihood of a shutdown in 2027 come into play? If players such as Jenkins, Culpepper, etc. come up during the 2026 season, they will be on strike/locked out in 2027? Correct? If they are not brought up, would they be playing at St. Paul in 2027? Can't recall the last time, but there was minor league baseball during that shutdown. Wasn't there? Baseball is changing. Not sure I like some of it, but so be it I guess.

Here we go again talking about what the Twins payroll will be. Or should be? I believe the Brewers payroll this year is just a bit over $100M. Isn't Cleveland a bit under $100M? The topic we should be talking about is what the Twins are doing with their payroll. Whatever level it is at. The Twins can win with a +/- $100M payroll as others are doing it. Can this front office and on field coaching staff do what is needed to make the Twins a winner? That's the question. At least for me.

Must disagree, DJL. Not saying I think Keirsey is a stud or would likely be a starter for the Twins. Do think he could be a good option as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Also, one never knows when someone comes out of the weeds and becomes a solid player at an older age. Won't disagree he didn't hit for the Twins. But you have to consider which is it, the chicken or the egg. Did he not hit because he isn't capable? Or because no one is likely to hit when breaking into the big leagues and batting a few times a week.

Curious about Prielipp going on the Development List. Assume it isn't an injury. Does anyone know more about the reason? Or is it a way to rest his arm after the huge jump of innings this year? Or could they be working with him a bit before moving across the river in September? Looking at the box scores, see that Jenkins had another Jenkins type game. 1-3 with a walk and run scored. See he also stole his 10th base. Seeing he has only played 48, that number was impressive to me.

Thanks for this post, Jamie. Found it interesting, very interesting. LaValle E. Neal III had a wonderful piece in today's Strib. The lead was that the Twins moves are not over. Nor should they be. Talks about players who will likely be moved because they haven't performed like the Twins expected. Or maybe hoped. Amongst that group were both Wallner and Larnach. Talks about many believing you need 1,500 at bats to determine what type of hitter a player is. Well, Larnach has now exceeded that so the Larnach we see is who he will likely be. Same to some extent with Wallner. With all the highly touted prospects on the horizon, this duo along with Julien and a few pitchers may be leaving Target Field prior to opening day. As for Fedko, love what he is doing this year. What I find surprising about so many comments is how people here are down on Rodon. The kid has had a handful of at bats with Toronto/Twins. But take a look at his minor league numbers. If he had been in our organization, people here would be claiming he is our next super star. I know my Wisconsin background (kid is from Middleton where my office was before moving here 40 years ago) makes me biased, but this kid has a chance of being very good. It also appears he has good speed and plays good defense, something both Larnach and Wallner do not do. I also do not think that Keirsey should be written off. He has excellent speed and is very good in the outfield at all three positions. He has hit very well in the minors, although with minimal power. I don't think we should be down on him because he hasn't hit for the Twins. No one can be expected to hit well when getting what was it, two or three at bats a week?
