Anyway, my bad for derailing this discussion. This was finally a fun game to watch mainly because of the at bats (and of course Louie V). It was getting so hard to watch our highest paid players slinking back to the dugout. I would like to see this approach continue and yes find a way to get Wallner back up. Ride the hot hand for crying out loud.

Another inning could very well be 20 pitches which would be 106 and I'm guessing that would be over the rookie's limit. Why the need to go to the limit when you have low leverage innings available for your pen? Back then were guys pumping 98mph fastballs like Louie? If the Louie Varland we saw last night was throwing 88, he may have fell asleep out there, lol. Look I thought they were going to send him out for the 8th. My point is I don't care that they didn't, all I care about is they win the game, and we get a full season, plus playoffs, of a healthy, successful Louie Varland. How we get there doesn't matter to me one bit, just like shut outs and complete games etc., Those things are not wins.

Pitchers are getting injured more and throwing as hard as they can. Since this is different than in the past wouldn't it follow that they might be able to pitch less innings?

If anything was "sad" wouldn't it be that the other starter only got 4.2 innings out of his 102 pitches? We've got a young, strong, determined starter on our hands who is likely going to blow by his most innings pitched in a season this year. This management staff has managed to keep Duran healthy after only pitching 16 innings 2 years ago. They have Joe Ryan, a rising star with a smooth delivery and a clean injury history. If he's got his flow going they've run him up to I think about 108 pitches. When late in a start he had a draining what was it 15-20 pitch at bat and is losing velocity, they pull him at 89. This strategy seems to be working. Pushing a starter to a complete game, shut out or no hitter etc achieves essentially bragging rights but not much else. I prefer a winning, healthy starter for a full season. Look at what happened with Johan, do you think he would trade that one game for a longer, healthy career?

I agree with this. Put Maeda in the pen but calculate how many innings he might pitch as a starter from that point and pay him to his contract at that level. Everybody wins. (Not my money, lol.}

You are entitled to that opinion and it is shared by many. My questions: What is the fascination of pushing pitchers to their absolute limit at every opportunity? Does this make any sense to do this in an era with such frequent pitcher injuries? In a game like this with a lead like that, I would argue that is the exact time to ease up on your valuable young starter.

Carlos Correa is Coming On for Minnesota
wabene replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't see the logic here. It is being implied that other teams saw his poor performance this year coming. Why would they then offer the same AAV but just cut the term in half?- 49 replies

What Will The Twins Do in Center Field?
wabene replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After scanning the medical paper @Eris linked, it says 5% of all surgeries for injured baseball players are knee surgeries. That is all knee surgeries not just the ACL. It does state that knee injuries are more common for outfielders, but I couldn't find any stats on that. The paper categorized knee injuries as relatively rare in baseball it being a non-contact sport. After mulling this over, it doesn't seem to matter whether Lewis plays infield or outfield. I do think if he is more comfortable in the infield, then I would leave him there for now as he makes his way back post surgery. As suggested above, later this year he should start getting practice reps in the outfield for future positional flexibility. Then later this year as things play out with Buxton, Celestino, MAT and Martin, you chart your coarse forward. Any athlete in any sport has to learn how to protect themselves during play. Some are better than others. Lewis still can get there and be healthy going forward. The big question is, is it too late for Buxton? Has he already done too much damage earlier in his career? -
I would never have pulled Gray at that point. Maybe Lopez isn't so fragile after all and can bounce back. The talent is not in question.

I agree with much of this Damn, but Kepler was hot before he got injured on a high 800's OPS streak, he might help the cause. It was rough to see Walner sent down at that time no doubt.

Ain't that the truth brother, lol. Excellent post and I agree. I do think there is a learning curve for Rocco. He seemed less assertive early on but has come out of his shell lately. Maybe he's been a little over aggressive with some of the pinch hitting this past week, but as part of learning, I believe he will reign it in. Variety is the spice of life and you couldn't have a wider variety than the views expressed above of @jmlease1and @Our Thoughts on Rocco, lol! This seriously cracked me up

Blayne Enlow is Out to Prove He Belongs
wabene replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I agree. When mentioning the pitching pipeline, it is also important to remember how many of Cleveland's good starters were aquired via trade. Joe Ryan is a great example of the front office's pipeline producing results. He debuted with the Twins and has improved under their watch. -
I do agree that the base running has been much more fun to watch. I don't think everything hinges on the whims of Baldelli. Last year the criticism was pulling starters to early. This year they lead the league in innings pitched. They are running more because Buxton feels better and they have guys like Castro and MAT. Any manager is going to green light a guy they think will be successful.

Look at Hick's OPS with the Yankees. Seems to me they waited and waited for him to live up to expectations after signing a huge, embarrassing contact.

With Jax pumping slider after slider everybody was calling for a change of strategy by Jax, Vasquez or both. It looks like someone was listening. 5.9% was his lowest slider total by a huge margin and the results were good. I liked him attacking the edges with his fastball and countering with the highest usage of his change and cut fastball. Nice mix. Looking at his season as a whole, there is no reason to get stuck in a slider rut. Mixing it up more will make that slider more effective.

Kirilloff should not be pinch hit for, full stop. He is maybe our best pure hitting prospect and he needs as many at bats against leftys as you can feed him. Get him dialed in. Early this year when it became apparent we were going to ride the platoon advantage more I was excited. Last night was a bridge too far.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If the bullpen is faltering why would that make a manager pull starters earlier?

I think you are selling this young man short. He's had 10 starts in the bigs. 5 good starts last year then he comes in this year having improved over the off-season. He easily has middle rotation upside. The guy is a worker and I wouldn't be surprised with even more from him. If this is your 5th starter, you truly do have a top flight rotation.
