    Had Vic Power on my paper route in Minneapolis when I was a kid. Mrs. Power always handled collections. I always made sure there were no rips or tears and all inserts were there. I was bummed when they moved away. ?

    Don't forget our AA shortstop Jermaine Palacios who is currently smacking the ball around for Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League. Looks like he's getting reps at SS, 3B & LF. Interesting.

    My hunch is he gets a spring training invite and if he shows well, we'll probably see him in a Twins uniform at some point in 2022.

    I believe Whitefield signed a minor league deal with the Angels last week.

    In the perfect condition of 3 sets of 3 pitchers and 9 inning games, each pitcher appears in 54 games and pitches 162 innings and all could qualify for league leaders. Interesting symmetry.

    The Rays GM Erik Neander's take on Jermaine Palacios when they acquired him from the Twins in 2018: “This is somebody that, by our own work and by our own information, what we see here is a lean, wiry Venezuelan shortstop who has had plenty of offensive success ... He’s someone we think has some offensive upside. He can play shortstop and play it well. All reports on the makeup are very positive. This is someone we think can grow into more physical strength ... might have another gear up from here. You look at what he’s accomplished to date on the field, combined with the tool set, along with the makeup, we think that this is a really exciting player to add to our system.” Not sure if the Twins view him as a Major League piece, but I've read worse player reviews and it was his struggles with the bat in the Rays organization that led him back to being with the Twins. He hit pretty good at AA last year. Possible Twins SS for 2022?

    Agreed. As fans we want who we want and don't have the time or inclination to figure the math. The kicker to trying to do outside analysis is "real" team value and the fact that some of the owners are ludicrous wealthy and really could spend as much as they wanted to if they wanted to. Kudos to the guys over at MLB Trade Rumors as they really do a good job when they deep dive player and trade values and costs. Also, we don't always know if a team covets certain players that might add a premium to their spending targets. 2021 opening day payrolls: The Dodgers at ≈ $235 mil were six and a half times more than the Pirates at ≈ $36 mil. The Twins at ≈ $121 mil were a hair above the MLB average of ≈ $120 mil. It makes a difference. Let the rotometrics begin!

    I'm not trying to prove anything, they're just a couple of sources of info about the finances of baseball that anyone can try to decipher. Maybe the only thing we can conclude is that it's hard to tell how much a team is willing to spend unless you're the one doing the spending.

    It's interesting that Gray has pitched more effectively at home than on the road, even with a PPF (Pitchers Park Factor) of about 116 (inflates hitting) for Coors Field over his career. I would have thought his away stats would be better. Not a deal breaker but something to consider when considering how he would pitch with Target Field as his home.

    All the metrics love Kepler's defense. Even over at fangraphs he's the best fielding RF in the AL. Yes he got snubbed. The major component of selection is managers and coaches. Being mostly cynical of all things these days, I'm not sure how robust their effort is in making their selections or if there is back room shenanigans going on. Sometimes effortless excellence gets overlooked. Snubbed I say, snubbed.

    I went to the 1st game ever played there, an exhibition game on April 3rd, 1982. Pete Rose got the 1st hit in The Dome. Wanted to get Pete's autograph but it didn't happen. It felt both weird and kinda cool playing indoors; a Guthrie Theatre for baseball. From the 2nd deck the Blue-Green effect of the field and surrounding walls and stands could play visual tricks on you. And getting "swept" out of the park after the game by the air pressure was unique. Now, where did I park my car again?

    I'm advocating a position of cost-effective competitiveness. Fill the pipeline with high quality pitching prospects, help them develop confidence and figure out how to get hitters out and move them up. If you need a veteran pitcher to fill a hole or leadership needs, then sign him. I don't think a free agent signing or 2 is really going to rescue the Twins next year enough to put them in the post season.

    No, the previous poster had said it's nearly impossible to trade for exceptional young arms and I was just using as reference that the Yankees in 2018 (3 years ago) acquired just that for a reserve outfielder to boot. I never said it was an overnight process, just that you can acquire and/ or develop a stable of possible aces to populate your starting rotation. The percentage of payroll that a free agent ace will cost is too great a risk for the Twins. Heck, even the vaunted Yankees had to play a single-game playoff this year, started their $36 million-dollar-man, and still lost. No matter how good you are, the post season is still kind of a crap shoot. I think it was Roger who posted earlier that a rotation of #2's and #3's can carry you a long way both during the season and into the post season, and be affordable year over year. And yes, you better have a decent bullpen.
