Also, Wentz is starting again. hooray. Another tough defense too; I expect he'll get his clock cleaned again. Then a long week after this one. Will they turn back to JJ then? Or will they have him avoid the Lions too? They just beat the tar out of the previously resilient Baker Mayfield. Or will JJ conveniently be healthy when the Vikings face the Ravens and their squad of JV defensive players?

I doubt it. I'm not against trying new things though and the Vikings shouldn't be either.

I thought he got a significant raise, but I had also thought he had been hired as the manager, not pitching coach, so I guess my recollection wasn't straight on that one anyway. Guess he did get a manager job later, and in the SEC, that probably was 5x his Twins salary, but obviously not initially.

During the press conference, Falvey seemed to slip up and confirm ownership was who had Baldelli fired. Agree, about Falvey as well. Much of the hate is just blanket disillusionment; most who are seething that he's still here wouldn't say a good word about him if he rescued a baby from a burning building. That's fine, I have no special spot in my heart for him and I'd also replace him. But if we're being objective, it's not like he's intentionally putting a losing team on the field. And if ownership did fire Baldelli, then he knows he's on watch and much more likely to look for a new approach instead of doubling down on his prior approach which clearly wasn't working. He's self aware enough to know that doing the same thing that got Baldelli fired isn't going to save his job.

They were paying him something like 5x the salary the Twins were paying him. And it wasn't a job that would still be available after the season was over.

Understanding that they are a very dysfunctional franchise, I'd still like to know why they were so dead set on hiring a former well known player with no experience. Sounds like it was only going to be Pujols, Hunter or Suzuki. Why no interest in non-former players?

Kwesi has nailed free agency though. I've been saying for two years they should keep him, IF they hire someone else who has full autonomy to run the draft.

I've seen some great Vikings v Chargers games in the past, but both teams are struggling. And it sounds like the Vikings truly could go in three different directions at QB with McCarthy and Wentz both injured and this being a short week. If Brosmer actually does start, he's either got to be really, really good, or really, really bad. Like good enough that everyone says, McCarthy who? Or bad enough that the stans are OK with washing their hands of him after one game. If he's anywhere in the middle, this franchise is going to be in QB purgatory and we all get to wallow in ambiguity, indecision and aimless direction. I really hope we don't later look back at these early weeks of the the 2025 season and say, Oh, that's when we turned into the Cleveland Browns. Not just because of the QB situation, but the aging roster and no young players playing well enough to dream on. Over-dramatic, I know, but I am worried this team is about to get stuck in a rut. And clearly they won't be able to draft their way out of it.

Detroit and Seattle both dominated last night's games, yet neither could put their opponent away. A lot of that going around in the NFC this year.

Sure, whether it's elite power, elite on base skills, elite pitching or a combination of any elite skills, there is more than one way to win a World Series. But it's a crapshoot only for the elite teams. Only twice in the last 30 years has a team outside the top ten in spending won the World Series. So as long as you're willing to pay elite players, regardless of their specific skill set, you get to play this particular game of chance.

Still, the Eagles could have still lost despite the extra motivation, and the fact that they couldn't bring it the prior two games doesn't bode well for their chances of repeating.

Well if true, and I suspect you are right, than the teams with the star players who give 100% effort during the playoffs, will get a bigger boost than teams who get 100% effort from their scrappy but less talented players. Which would explain why the top 10 payroll teams absolutely dominate when it comes to winning the World Series.

The Giants look to be hiring the manager of the University of Tennessee and plenty of people are aghast at such a move. MLB's staunch resistance to change and new ideas while clinging to nostalgia and tradition is what is killing this league. Every other pro sport league dabbles in hiring top level college coaches and they have for decades, but not MLB. 'We're so precious and elite, such a peon could NEVER manage a team at OUR level!!!' This Old Boys club nonsense is so outdated. And if the Twins seriously want to bring someone in who eagerly will work with and develop young hitters, a college coach should be considered here as well.

I noticed never noticing him and I noticed he didn't have any stats. I didn't know he got zero defensive snaps though. He was a great story. But unless he can hold up as an edge rusher, and he almost certainly can't, he's just such a liability. Other QBs were literally audibling from runs to passes just to go after him.

If McCarthy doesn't get rid of the ball faster than he did the first two weeks, he's not going to stay healthy for the entirety of the last 11 games.

For sure. At this point nobody thinks Wentz is a savior. I'd be more concerned with internally the coaches and players knowing JJ's shortcomings and them being significant.

Wentz was really bad. But outside of those two late sacks, he was pretty decisive and got rid of the ball despite pressure. Poor throws and poor decisions, but decisive. Im really concerned JJ can’t make reads anywhere close to fast enough for this league and won’t get past his first option. So it could be poor throws, poor decisions and at a snails pace. Still, the Vikings made this decision, they have to try.

If they give Wentz a chance to redeem himself and they win, it will be even harder to put McCarthy in. But yeah, they might do that.

This sucks in the moment, but I stand by my first post today, this might be for the best. This would have been a terrible game for McCarthy. Now there should be no question that JJ needs to get the rest of the starts, even if he struggles. This team really needs to reasonably know what they have in him by the end of the year.

Yeah, they didn't do anything to try to save clock on that drive. Not sure what KOC and Wentz were thinking.
