Correa seems like a guy who will up his game when motivated. That's obviously not a ringing endorsement, but if he goes to Houston, I fully expect him to return to glory and make the Twins look foolish immediately. And similarly, if the Twins do get sold and new owners inject new life into this franchise, I'd think he'd be very likely to return to form here next year and help lead an improved team back to the playoffs. On the other hand, if the Pohlads are staying, or new owners are no different, then yeah, I'd expect Correa to produce similarly to what he's doing now.

In accountant terms, I think the comparison is the weirdo who doesn't make the IRS pay them the full amount of their refund: I would like to receive the full amount of my Paddack please.

The very thrifty Rays and Orioles just traded similarly unexciting players and ate money to do it. One got an infielder in A+ ball and the other a AA pitcher. Now, some may argue that Danny Jensen and Seranthony Dominguez are better players, but then why did those teams have to eat the money? Answer: they likely didn't have to eat it, but they did to get the better prospects. At this point I'm just annoyed. Let's see what happens with Bader, Castro and Coulombe. I'll give them a chance to eat money on those contracts to get even better returns.

But honestly, the saving money aspect isn't the scariest part of this. Recent reports say the Pohalds have one foot out the door. They are not supposed to care about next year's payroll. Unless they still think they're cutting checks next year. Or worse, the front office already assumes or knows the new owners are also going to have the same mindset.

I'm minimizing the 1.2M future savings of the Dobnak deal? What kind of player improvement do you get for 1.2M next year? I don't want ANY free agent that cost 1.2M and a 10M player and a 11.2M player are the exact same player. This does nothing to improve the future of the team.

But the financial value only benefits the team, if the savings of that value is used to improve the team. They aren't going to use that financial savings to add players this year.

Red Sox (Giolito) vs Twins (TBD): 7/29/25, 6:40pm
nicksaviking replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Dang, that's more than The Beatles! -
Yeah, I don't know why anyone would care. Barnstorming baseball teams ended up having unique rules back in the day. They'd play in farm fields and didn't always have enough players to fill up a lineup. Locals would get to grab their gloves and play not only against but sometimes WITH the touring players sometimes too. Can't remember the last time I heard anyone complain about the Harlem Globetrotters either.

Listening to most of the national guys, they really give off the impression that they think the Twins HAVE to make these trades. Which makes the national guys sound clueless, because the Twins obviously don't. Barring injury, the value of Ryan, Duran and Jax won't decrease before this off season as they'll still have two years of control left. And of course, fingers crossed the Twins are sold and THEY are a buyer a couple months from now.

Manfred's player relations initiative...
nicksaviking replied to The Great Hambino's topic in Other Baseball
I got to say, the fact that one of the highest paid players in the league was the one who flipped out about a potential salary cap isn't a good look for the players. Wow, shocking that the guy making 350M is screaming to protect his money while the guys at the bottom of the wage scale, who would significantly benefit from salary caps and floors, have to keep their mouths shut or they'd incur the ire of the super stars. -
Or if no sale comes together this offseason or a new owner is just as spendthrift as the Pohlads, I could see a trade more likely this winter.

Mets, Yankees Inquiring on Outfielder Harrison Bader
nicksaviking replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'm not comparing any WAR, it's a near pointless stat particularly in this case. The Yankees are looking for offensive help with Judge down, Bader's defense doesn't fill that void. It'd be like going car shopping and coming home with a jet ski instead. So yes, this trade would be similar to if Christian Vazquez has a minor offensive bounce back the beginning of next season and then the Twins went and traded for him hoping his first time in MN was an aberration. -
Mets, Yankees Inquiring on Outfielder Harrison Bader
nicksaviking replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Wouldn't the Yankees trading for Harrison Bader be the equivalent to the Twins trading for Christian Vazquez at next year's trade deadline? I can't even imagine how much these boards would be on fire if they did that! -
I'll admit, when it comes to front office personnel and managers, I do wonder if they make decisions to save their jobs instead of to enrich the long term outlook, but even setting that aside, if we don't know next year's ownership situation, Falvey shouldn't be selling controllable assets. From my perspective, it's very possible this team only needs a 15 - 20M payroll bump and a manager who can get the most out of young players to be a legit contender next year. No guarantee a new owner will do that, but it's not that large of an ask of someone who will want to play with their fun new MLB toy.

Just think of the return the team could have gotten had they sold them at their peaks? Had they been able to identify the underlying issues with these players early and got out from under them, they might have transformed the entire franchise. The Twins traded CEH and Steer for Mahle while at that point Miranda was crushing it; they probably get Luis Castillo if they move Miranda instead. This team has a problem either in identifying their players weaknesses, or coaching getting the most out of them.

Job security or no job security, I'd tie his hands based solely on his track record of mid-season trades. They've been pretty brutal. His off-season trades have been pretty dang good overall though. Broader bidding pool and I doubt you get much more for 2 years of a reliever vs 2 years and 2 months anyway. Plus, obviously a better indication if he's here longer than this season. I'm putting his odds closer to 30-70 though. Even if new owners like Falvey (and I like much of what he's done) it just seems that this organization has such a toxic relationship with the fanbase right now that they'll want to scrub it as clean as possible if only to win everyone back. But it could also be a situation where new owners are diligent and want to sit and evaluate everything for a year, so year one (whenever that may be) may still stink of Pohlad.

non-Vikings NFL off season news
nicksaviking replied to gunnarthor's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
I'd definitely need to know more. I'd like to think the Raiders are just being sneaky about getting rid of a player who doesn't fit the new coaching scheme, but even with all the changes, they actually kept their DC, so I do suspect this might be a bad omen for him as a player. -
I would like to know WHO the front office is in 2026. Do we even know who's vision will be used? Just trade expiring contracts. Trading controllable players only makes a mess for someone else to clean up. Most likely. Probably. Hopefully.
