While I don't agree that trade timing is all within the control of the Twins front office, the Twins shortstop heavy draft strategy this year does make me think Royce Lewis may be on the table, and he seems exciting enough to me that other teams may see him as a piece that's too good to wait on. Like Joe Ryan in the Cruz deal last year. Still, one starting pitcher isn't going to keep Bundy, Archer and Smeltzer out of the rotation, they need two if they want to be serious about this year.

You don't pay retail now, you pay 50% markup. If the Twins were sellers and didn't hold up the other team, like they did last year with Nelson Cruz, I wouldn't be happy. And since the Twins probably need TWO starters and TWO relievers, they can't afford to overpay, they need to pay market rate, even if it means waiting a couple extra days. It's not an excuse, it's the law of the land.

Yeah, Mahle's road stats are quite a bit better than Castillo's. I said before that Castillo would be the big splash and may be a big morale boost due to his reputation, but Mahle may be more impactful on the field. That said, as much as it would hurt, I'd probably include Royce Lewis as a headliner if the Reds were willing to deal both to the Twins. Castillo, Mahle, Gray and Ryan is a rotation I'd feel good about.

Trade Rumor: Twins still linked to Frankie Montas
nicksaviking replied to Otto von Ballpark's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Two injured players? I doubt the A's want that. Which is fine, I don't want Montas. Check out his road numbers, he's never been anything other than average at best away from Oakland. It's a gimmick ballpark which benefits their pitchers significantly; I'll never trust trading for their starters. -
As much as I want a "high end" reliever, I don't really think any are available. Sure a guy like David Robertson may help, but I don't think he's elite or anything. He's having his first good season since 2018, I wouldn't trust his success will last. I don't believe for a second Bednar is available for anything other than an entire farm system, he's under control for 4.5 more years. Daniel Bard is not elite. His walk problem will only compound the issues already plaguing the bullpen. They need starters, and two of them. Push Archer to the pen and grab another reliever who's not exciting but has underlying numbers that are better than his current counting stats. That seems like the best they can do at this point.

Are the Twins MLB’s Worst Baserunning Team?
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, it's brutal and I don't think it's about the speed. They run when they shouldn't and don't when they should. Seems to me a major issue is either the players aren't listening to Tommy Watkins, or Tommy Watkins is making very poor decisions. I don't know why they don't try something new at the hot corner.- 19 replies

I won't give up Winder for Castillo. I like Winder, but not so much that I wouldn't trade him. The problem is if Winder is traded for Castillo, the Twins are committing to two of Archer, Bundy and Smeltzer in the rotation the rest of the year. I don't care who the top three arms are, that's just not acceptable. But, if the Twins could get both Castillo AND Mahle, I'd be interested in a mega deal even headlined by Royce Lewis. Lewis, Winder, Larnach, SWR? Maybe another lower prospect or so? That'd have to get the Reds attention.

Why Would the Twins Deal Carlos Correa?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What if we trade for him and he blows out his knee? Every other GM is thinking when considering him a “rental” player.- 34 replies

Yeah, now we're in for the normal deadline feet dragging. I'm not going to place blame since I tend to assume it's the selling teams, who have zero impetus to start the process, that are holding things up. Demanding a Royce Lewis, then settling for Michael Helman and a bag of PTBNL flavored potato chips. It is fortunate this year that the Twins wonky post-AS game schedule has them playing fewer games until the deadline. Fewer games for us to worry about them losing without the added talent anyway.

Yeah, Mooney looks really under-the-radar. Still plenty of season left for Headrick, Prato, Gibson-Long and Lawyerson get hot and make us sweat too.

Unless Alex Isola absolute cannot catch, the 29 other clubs would be crazy to let him survive the Rule 5 draft. I'd not count out any of that 2019 draft class that reaches AA either.

What signs are you hoping for? I mean, singing him in the first place was a bigger sign that they wanted him more than any of the other 29 teams. And knock it off about this not wanting to improve the team nonsense. People's jobs are constantly on the line in this regard. This is just petty, petulant and clearly untrue.

Minnesota Twins Activate Slugger Miguel Sano
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For sure. Eddie Rosario's 33 games and NLCS performance with Atlanta just crossed my mind prior to posting. If Sano pulled that off, the Twins would at least consider his option.- 60 replies

Minnesota Twins Activate Slugger Miguel Sano
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure seems like a last stand for Sano; barring becoming a post season hero, it will soon be over. Should be good work for him next year though, plenty of NL teams still haven’t figured out this DH business yet. I know he’s not popular in many fan corners, but as far as “bust” prospects go, he was a pretty dang good one.- 60 replies

The pitching pipeline is thin at the top BECAUSE Ryan, Duran, Winder, Ober and Jax have all recently graduated to non-prospects. God forbid Balazovic or Canterino underperform or get injured. Fire the front office, the next two guys in line are struggling! Let's just call the whole thing a bust and pretend the guys right behind them in the pipeline aren't pushing their way right past them. Enough with this pet project of yours. There are other things to discuss on this site and this tangent is completely off topic.
-
What does it matter when he was drafted? He's arguably the Twins third best starter. Trading your third best starter would impact most teams. Ryan, Ober, Winder, Duran and Jax, have all debuted in the last two years and have been among the team's best pitchers. Much better than most of the vets in fact.

Sands really needs to be moved to the pen. He can't help the big club in the rotation this year, let's see if he can help the bullpen though.

Get to Know Twins Draft Pick Connor Prielipp
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Did Ted break the news that he's signed? That's fantastic if he did. Though, just submitting the Q&A back was probably a good sign that he wasn't going to walk away I suppose. -
You're comparing a rookie pitcher to a 1st ballot HOFer who has two decades of built up stamina and arm strength. If you want Ryan to be conditioned enough to make noise in the post season, you'll probably want to pace him now. And if you think that's a new "stat head" idea, I guess Tom Kelly's a computer nerd too, because while 36-year-old Jack Morris had free reign to go as long as he wanted into Game 7 of the 1991 World Series, Joe Ryan's analogue, Scott Erickson got pulled after 4 innings in his one ALCS start, 4 2/3 innings in game 3 of the World Series, and then went all the way to a full 6 innings in the do-or-die Game 6.

Except Syndergaard was not an ace in 2019 and hasn't been since. In fact, he was a below average pitcher in 2019. No one's asking you to prove they would have won the World Series with him, but can you explain why giving away a player like Buxton for a below average starter was going to solve the Twins problem? There would have been a good chance he never even took the hill for that playoff series. Berrios and Odorizzi would have started ahead of him.

Minnesota’s 3 Options with Carlos Correa
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I doubt option #2 is actually an option until the season is over. Unless Correa can somehow sense a long term injury happening, there’s no reason for him to talk extension until he can better predict what the off-season will hold. Hold tight for now. Once the season ends, let Correa and Boras know they’d like to keep him around and they have tons of salary space to sign him, but they will not be left empty handed, so if Correa isn’t willing to make an early decision, the Twins will instead throw the cash at Turner, Bogaerts or Swanson. No hard feelings.
