    I'd take another reliever, and I wouldn't say no to Robertson, but I'd rather find another arm who'll be here next year. Particulary after seeing the price for getting such a player.

    I don't see how Robertson would be considered a better relief option than Lopez. He's a free agent after this year, old, fragile and doesn't have close to the numbers Lopez has had. Are there some 'small sample size' concerns with Lopez? Maybe, but no more than Robertson who hasn't had a decent season since 2018.

    There's many things that go into doing what's best for the team and you can bet putting fans in the stands and keeping TVs tuned in is one of those things as far as ownership is concerned. But as far as what's best on field, I'd argue that showing the players you're not quitting on them while they're still in 1st place is probably doing what is best for the team. It would be demoralizing, and not just for this year, if they sold off players.

    One starter is only a token move, they need two starters and two relievers. If that’s not happening, and I’m guessing it’s not, stay away from rental players.

    I do think Baldelli is largely an on field avatar for the overall brain trust, of which he’s only moderately influential of. I absolutely think before every game they determine ‘starter a’ gets x innings or x pitches or gets pulled once ‘batter a’ comes to the plate for a third time. Id guess there is another discussion about which relievers are to be used with his real freedom only being able to decide the order they’re used based on matchups. I don’t like that Gray only went 5 innings or that Duran was used in a blowout, but I do believe Baldelli is just following the conglomerate’s game plan.

    So it sounds like Baldelli has two choices. Pull the starters early and have fans call for him to get fired. Or clearly defy his bosses by leaving them in and actually get fired.

    Can you clarify which lock down relievers and how many innings these relievers were supposed to go? Because I assume your answer is Duran and he should pitch all the innings.

    And replace him with the guy the Padres just fired? The guy who was probably leaned on most heavily in preparation for this series?

    What an incredible A’s team too. They definitely underperformed in the late 80’s-early 90’s. Should have had more than one WS ring.

    I’m still not in the “sellers” camp, but watching my new favorite pitcher get flayed alive was the most demoralizing thing I’ve watched this year. I agree, the loss of Wes Johnson has to be contributing to the pitching collapse. I’m not sure if that’s fixable in-season.

    I want Archer removed too, but I just can't watch Bundy any more. He's just lobbing meatballs at the plate and has no business facing major league hitters. Archer and his short starts are killing this team, but if they had four decent starters ahead of him, then I think the bullpen would be fine picking up his slack.

    Syndergaard isn't high on my list, but making sure Bundy and Smeltzer don't start another game is. To do that, the Twins will need two starters, presumably the second one won't be terribly exciting.

    I'll echo everyone else, great stuff. McMillan must have some pretty decent projectable attributes to go back to school as his numbers don't exactly scream 6th round money.

    No, it's exactly what I said. The Rays had to OVERPAY for Cruz. The Twins almost certainly would have to do the same if they wanted a guy early this year.

    I'd be thrilled if they did. Mahle has been my trade target most of the summer.

    Yes, and we celebrated wildly because Joe Ryan for a half season of Nelson Cruz was clearly a fleecing we were all happy with.

    I'd be more than happy to get a fair price for Mahle now, but wouldn't the Twins front office as well? I mean they're not waiting around just to mess with the fans; they know the situation the team is in just as we do. Neither of the Reds pitchers need to be traded. They're still under control next year and can be traded in the offseason.

    So why would they trade now if they are hoping someone will get desperate and up the ante? If the Twins wanted him now, wouldn't they have to pay that ante? Put whatever % on that markup we want, it's still a markup.

    While I don't agree that trade timing is all within the control of the Twins front office, the Twins shortstop heavy draft strategy this year does make me think Royce Lewis may be on the table, and he seems exciting enough to me that other teams may see him as a piece that's too good to wait on. Like Joe Ryan in the Cruz deal last year. Still, one starting pitcher isn't going to keep Bundy, Archer and Smeltzer out of the rotation, they need two if they want to be serious about this year.

    You don't pay retail now, you pay 50% markup. If the Twins were sellers and didn't hold up the other team, like they did last year with Nelson Cruz, I wouldn't be happy. And since the Twins probably need TWO starters and TWO relievers, they can't afford to overpay, they need to pay market rate, even if it means waiting a couple extra days. It's not an excuse, it's the law of the land.

    Why would the Reds deal him until they can other teams to commit their best offers though? The other teams aren't going to have any motivation to do the Twins a favor. I mean, I'm all for it, but it's not on the front office if they can't get something done early.

    Yeah, Mahle's road stats are quite a bit better than Castillo's. I said before that Castillo would be the big splash and may be a big morale boost due to his reputation, but Mahle may be more impactful on the field. That said, as much as it would hurt, I'd probably include Royce Lewis as a headliner if the Reds were willing to deal both to the Twins. Castillo, Mahle, Gray and Ryan is a rotation I'd feel good about.

    That’s not bad. I think Bard might hurt the club due to his walk issues, but this team needs two starters to keep Bundy/Smeltzer out of the rotation. Between Syndergaard and Snell, there are guys they can painlessly get if they’re willing to take on salary.

    Two injured players? I doubt the A's want that. Which is fine, I don't want Montas. Check out his road numbers, he's never been anything other than average at best away from Oakland. It's a gimmick ballpark which benefits their pitchers significantly; I'll never trust trading for their starters.

    As much as I want a "high end" reliever, I don't really think any are available. Sure a guy like David Robertson may help, but I don't think he's elite or anything. He's having his first good season since 2018, I wouldn't trust his success will last. I don't believe for a second Bednar is available for anything other than an entire farm system, he's under control for 4.5 more years. Daniel Bard is not elite. His walk problem will only compound the issues already plaguing the bullpen. They need starters, and two of them. Push Archer to the pen and grab another reliever who's not exciting but has underlying numbers that are better than his current counting stats. That seems like the best they can do at this point.
