But most of the best MLB relief pitchers used to be starters, and most of them were given up on by their original team while as a starter and only became a stand out reliever when another team gave them a shot in the bullpen. Vallimont's shot at being a qualify starting pitcher is really, really low at this point.

Twins Daily 2022 Draft Coverage, April 21
nicksaviking replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Lesko is having TJ surgery. Kiley McDaniel ranks him 8th now, which just so happens to be where the Twins select: https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/33810529/kiley-mcdaniel-2022-mlb-draft-rankings-20-which-former-mlb-star-son-soars-our-top-150 I'm not afraid of TJ anymore, I'd be interested. Matt Holiday's kid would interest me too. The kids of former MLB stars are tearing up the league right now. I assume there's no shot at Andrew Jones' kid though. Even though the Twins need a catcher, I think it's always a horrible idea to draft one early. Unless he turns out to be a generational talent, the offensive difference between a bad catcher and a "good" catcher tends to be marginal. -
If the Twins lose him before they try him out in the pen I'll be disappointed since that was almost certainly going to be his destination anyway.

Max Kepler Poised to Breakout ... Again?
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know, his launch angle going from 15.1 to 5.5 seems like he has dramatically overcorrected. Like Joe Mauer, he doesn't play a position where I'd be satisfied with a bunch of line-drive singles; he's got to put the ball over the fence. But unlike Mauer, he does seem to be purposefully making adjustments, so maybe he'll figure it out. -
I think he was talking about Emmanual Rodriguez, not Encarnacion-Strand. And boy, as much as the power for Rodriguez is exciting, holy cow, 16 BB in 64 PA for a 19-year-old is nuts. The ability to be patient and draw walks has to be one of the best indicators of future success. 14 games isn't many, but 20-year-olds at the MLB level aren't exactly uncommon anymore. None of the league's top young hitters spent a full year in low A ball. If he keeps hitting, I'd be disappointed if he's not in position to at least start next year in AA.

Can the Twins Lineup Turn it Around?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are quite a few guys in AAA and AA who look more than happy to take the jobs of most of these guys. If the Twins aren't .500 by the end of June, I wouldn't be surprised if Polanco ends up being the oldest Twins offensive starter. Heck, maybe the oldest rostered offensive player.- 32 replies

Just noticed Martin's BBR photo. That's a very unfortunate colored bandana he's wearing under that photoshopped hat.

Trevor Larnach is Hurting the Ball
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The odds were never in favor of Kirilloff AND Larnach both paying off. If it's only Larnach that ends up being a long-time lineup staple, that will still be a success in my book.- 19 replies

Should Byron Buxton Shift to Designated Hitter?
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The cringe inducing take doesn't bother me too much; there's probably not a poster on this site with more than 10 posts who hasn't shared at least one truly terrible opinion. We as sports fans probably do take a game made for kids too seriously. It's the clickbait-y, question mark headline that I disagree with. -
The season finale of Maisel was one of the best single episodes of any show I've seen in awhile. That show often does better when it's lighthearted, but the finale hit all the right dramatic beats.

3 Twins Prospects Off to Great Starts
nicksaviking replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great start for these guys. Lewis proving himself worthy would be an absolute boon to this organization. Looks like he quieted down his swing too. Still has the minor leg kick, but seemed to me before he was injured that there were lots of extra dance moves in his set up and swing.- 15 replies

So... Why Trade Taylor Rogers?
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not familiar with any quotes from the front office, if there were any, but they are always going to say they intend to "contend" or "compete". The team very much could, and should be better this year, but using those trigger words are pure lip service. They know this season and the future are going to be determined by how the young starting pitching develops. There was no getting around that once the free agent pitchers were off the board. Rogers' final year here would have been squandered with him bidding his time while the team gets the future rotation sorted out. But I'm still looking forward to a fun season and competitive baseball.- 89 replies

Should be, but since no one in-market can stream the game unless you have Direct TV, opening day just reminds me how upset this makes me. Sorry to take it out on Bundy.

Bundy and Gausman used to both be top prospects throwing in the mid 90s. But while Guasman had some ups and downs, he never had much for injury concerns and kept his velocity. Bundy blew out his arm and now can't touch 90 MPH.

Archer can earn some good bonuses, and the Twins did specifically craft it so that he can earn those bonuses based on starts OR based on appearances he goes at least three innings. I can't imagine that verbiage was put into his contract unless both the Twins and Archer knew that it was very likely he was going to be a long-man/piggy-backer in the bullpen.

Assessing the Twins Trade for Chris Paddack
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They were also two of the team's oldest healthy players, with Thielbar the only one older. Would seem to me the most logical correlation is that the Twins are in position to move the older players. I don't think they deal with Scott Boras on Buxton AND Correa deals if they're union bustin'.- 86 replies

I am giving Joe Ryan the chance to become my new favorite Twins pitcher tomorrow. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and surely would be a huge honor for him.

Giving Ryan the opening day gig and rolling with Ober, Duran, Winder and now trading for Paddack says to me they willingly tied their horse to the youth movement. Two weeks ago I would have never thought Winder and Duran would have made the club and I still had a sneaking suspicion they'd find a way to keep Ryan off the initial MLB roster by getting even more gag-worthy vets. I'm not sure when this decision materialized, it felt like it was in the last week or two, but it seems like they're committed to it now and there's no going back.

The problem is that he won't give the Twins more than Winder in 2023. Manaea would have made a lot of sense had the Twins signed a couple of big free agent starters.

I don't think wanting the young guys playing and punting the season are the same thing. And I do want to see the young guys. But why do you think those who don't like this trade were ever OK with the team punting? I think you're thinking of different posters.

In Bundy's case, it felt from the beginning like they said to themselves, "Uh the lockout is minutes away and we forgot about free agency, sign someone, anyone NOW!" I didn't like the inactivity, but I would say that there appears to be a legit game plan and direction at this point; I wouldn't have said that in December when Bundy was signed.

Another thing to consider is how San Diego has had a TON of highly thought of pitching prospects the last half decade and they never seem to pan out. It could absolutely be that every one of these prospects were never going to be any good and were always destined to bust. But it could also be that as an organization, they are really, really terrible at getting these guys across the finish line and these guys would be better off someplace else.
