    If they wanted a bat, they could probably find a more impactful one. Though to be fair, if the Twins ate all of the salary including the buyout, he'd probably cost no player of note. So in terms of sacrificed prospect equity, that might be hard to top. Though one thing that would move the needle for me regarding this hypothetical is if Cruz is at DH, the team could and should make Sanchez the primary catcher. Getting Jeffers' non-existent bat out of the lineup regularly would be a great auxiliary benefit.

    Mostly just interested in the bullpen, but if getting another starter would help boot Bundy from the rotation, or move Archer to the pen upon his return, I'd have some interest. Pablo Lopez is controlled for another 2.5 years, so he's kind of a different animal. He should cost way, way more, and I don't know that Miami is even open to dealing him at this time. I'd be interested if they were. No on Kelly and no on Montas. Kelly has no track record for this kind of success and he can't strike anyone out. Montas' production away from the Oakland Coliseum doesn't come close to matching what his asking price will be. Mahle on the other hand is lights out away from Cincinnati; his road numbers make him look like he could be significantly undervalued. Castillo does seem like the kind of productive prestige name that might send a message to the players and fans that the organization is committed to winning this year, even if I personally think the rest of the young staff needs another year for this team to actually compete for a championship.

    His problem is his 13.2% BB rate. Why is it DOUBLE his career average? The last few years the organization has seemed to prioritize low walk rates from the bullpen, yet Pagan is out there missing pitches left and right (and up and down). What has happened? Clearly the front office didn't expect this. If that can be fixed, I guess hold tight with him because his stuff is good, but he shouldn't be a late inning guy. He's never been good in high leverage situations. For his career his high leverage OPS is .839. He looks just fine otherwise.

    He’s stepped up and made many of us second guess our initial thoughts. But to be fair to those of us who were willing to sacrifice Gordon for Lewis, using that May 18th date in the OP, Lewis only had THREE xbh at the time. He looked like another slap hitter. It shouldn’t have been that stunning of an idea. I’d be quite confident it crossed the minds of those in charge.

    While I’m not as steadfast as Ashbury, I agree about not taking a catcher just because you need a catcher. A HOF catcher is a huge advantage, but one of those get drafted once a decade, maybe even longer. But if you don’t get one of those rare gems, you’re not getting much of an advantage. The difference between an average catcher and a poor catcher is pretty minimal. Partly because of the reduced number of games, and partly because except for those few HOFer’s they're just not great hitters.

    I enjoyed Obi Wan. I was surprised by some of the negative reactions I've seen. I'm more than happy to be critical of a bad Star Wars show, but some of the critics seemed to just want to pile on for the sake of fitting in. I was surprised they didn't use the show to close one of the OG plot holes though. With all the discussion in the show about Leia's birth mom, I thought for sure Obi Wan was going to force project some memories of her to Leia, which would have made her line about vaguely remembering her on ROTJ make more sense.

    I'd not include Winder, but otherwise, I think everyone's over-rating the Twins prospects. Does the UCL situation scare me? I suppose mildly, but he's under control for 3.5 years. Supposing he does go under the knife at some point, 2 - 2.5 years of service is still pretty good for a pitcher of his caliber.

    I don’t think I’d look at starting pitchers based on their ability to go deep into games, because it seems to me, going deep into games is an organizational prerogative, not a pitcher skill qualification.

    I'm not washing my hands of Strotman yet. Many of these guys take a year to adjust to bullpen life.

    The front office has seemed to make a subtle bullpen change the last couple of years, as it seems they have prioritized command. While Pagan and Thielbar have struggled with free passes this year, they haven’t in the past. Just my guess, but several of these high walk arms may not interest the club too much.

    Looking at Marquez, maybe I could like him if I squint. His velocity is still good. Strikeouts probably increase upon a move as the Twins likely decrease his sinker usage. Oddly he has an issue with wild pitches, but not walks. That’s probably a product of that silly sinker too though. Would the Twins take on that salary for him though? The Rockies still owe him about 22M. They’d likely not be able to get much of a return to clear him off their books.

    I don’t know why Miami would sell low on Rogers. He’s affordable and they can pick any time in the next three years to move him. Unless they know he’s broken for good, surely they’d wait until he rebounds. No interest in Marquez or Hendricks. I’d rather see the young arms. I’d trust the young arms more too.

    Yup, couldn't agree more. Sands doesn't look to have dominant stuff as a starter, but it might play up as a reliever. It will be a bummer if Balazovic can't make it as a starter, but those injuries are adding up; might need to make the switch if only to preserve him, like has happened with Duran. I've failed to understand the Henriquez hype. Admittedly his BB/K numbers have always been good, but he hasn't put up anything resembling an excellent stretch since Rookie League. Even so, the guy is 5'10" and 150lbs; that's not a starter, he's going to be in the pen in almost every scenario. Time to push the next batch to the surface. Then, hopefully the batch after that (?Headrick, SGL, Povich, Festa, Stankowiz, Legumina, Mooney?) is ready for the same push next year. There are enough guys on the conveyor belt I don't think we need to be stopping it to repair the guys in front. Just pull them off, let the next guy up proceed, and if the team is lucky enough fix the older guys, put them right back in line.

    This year and for his career, Tyler Mahle is really good when he doesn't pitch in Cincinnati. This year and for his career, Frankie Montas is average at best when he doesn't pitch in Oakland. I'd much rather have Mahle; that he'd likely cost less is a bonus.

    I wonder if Gossett's reassignment to Witchita indicates that SWR or Varland will get bumped to St. Paul once Winder rejoins the Twins. The Saints stash of starters the big club needs in case of emergency has been really poor all season long. It would be really nice to get the guys with potential up to that level.

    I could see Miranda being dealt, but not for a rental starter. I'd rather put together a bigger (albeit more painful) package for a Miami pitcher or Zac Gallan or someone who'll be around for a while during this run. Still, really, really don't like Montas though.

    Michael Helman is starting to look like one of those guys who was never a serious prospect, but who might end up actually being a decent MLB player, then you go back and look at his stats and wonder why he was never considered a serious prospect.

    I don't really see this team trading for a big ticket rental player. I could see them buying low on some players they liked and hoping they rebound, like the Braves did at the end of last year, but my guess is if they made a big name trade, it would be for a guy with more than just three months of control left. Also, I was thinking about Contreras the other day. Does anyone recall any big-time, mid-season catcher trades recently? Since half of the catcher's job is familiarizing himself with the pitchers, it would seem to me that catcher of all positions would be the most difficult to expect strong results from after a mid-season trade. But it was only a thought as I don't really remember any trades since Piazza got moved twice. Which admittedly worked out well for the Mets.

    Well pretty much every metric says his defense is poor this year. I've seen the free agent rankings that put Correa above Xandar Bogaerts solely because of Bogaerts' defense, yet he's ahead of Correa everywhere you look.

    I don't know that they were wrong about him exactly. I've never been high on him, and I liked Garver a ton, but if their assessment was that Garver's days as a catcher were about over, they look to be right on that mark. As for Rortvedt, his bat has always been worse than Jeffers', so I don't know that they were exactly "high" on Jeffers so much as had even less confidence in Rortvedt. I mean, out of the three catchers last year, Jeffers future behind the plate still looks the brightest by far. Which, obviously isn't saying much.

    With the Twins doing so well with the young pitchers and batters, and even more crushing it in the minors, the team really should be able to do the Quality over Quantity free agent bit for the foreseeable future. There shouldn't be a half dozen holes that can only be filled outside of the organization. And with Lewis back on the shelf, even with all those young players, none of them appear imminently in need of one of the big money pre-arbitration extensions. I mean as much as I like Joe Ryan, he's not going to be a free agent until his age 32 season. I mean, you could do Arraez, but he'd likely just get a small bump from the Polanco/Kepler blueprint. The Twins payroll should be naturally low for quite some time; Correa makes a lot of sense.

    I think the catching issue is league wide. Take out Wilson Contreras, the league's best catcher, and the difference between a "good" catcher and a poor or average catcher (whatever you want to call Sanchez and Jeffers) is about 1 WAR. You can usually spend less in assets to improve the team in other areas. I'd just hold on tight and hope Alex Isola is the real deal.

    I know folks can find outliers, but for about the 20th season in a row, I don’t want a pitcher coming from Oakland. It’s just not a club or ballpark I think typically shows pitcher output representative of their performance in 29 other ballparks.
