    Well pretty much every metric says his defense is poor this year. I've seen the free agent rankings that put Correa above Xandar Bogaerts solely because of Bogaerts' defense, yet he's ahead of Correa everywhere you look.

    I don't know that they were wrong about him exactly. I've never been high on him, and I liked Garver a ton, but if their assessment was that Garver's days as a catcher were about over, they look to be right on that mark. As for Rortvedt, his bat has always been worse than Jeffers', so I don't know that they were exactly "high" on Jeffers so much as had even less confidence in Rortvedt. I mean, out of the three catchers last year, Jeffers future behind the plate still looks the brightest by far. Which, obviously isn't saying much.

    With the Twins doing so well with the young pitchers and batters, and even more crushing it in the minors, the team really should be able to do the Quality over Quantity free agent bit for the foreseeable future. There shouldn't be a half dozen holes that can only be filled outside of the organization. And with Lewis back on the shelf, even with all those young players, none of them appear imminently in need of one of the big money pre-arbitration extensions. I mean as much as I like Joe Ryan, he's not going to be a free agent until his age 32 season. I mean, you could do Arraez, but he'd likely just get a small bump from the Polanco/Kepler blueprint. The Twins payroll should be naturally low for quite some time; Correa makes a lot of sense.

    I think the catching issue is league wide. Take out Wilson Contreras, the league's best catcher, and the difference between a "good" catcher and a poor or average catcher (whatever you want to call Sanchez and Jeffers) is about 1 WAR. You can usually spend less in assets to improve the team in other areas. I'd just hold on tight and hope Alex Isola is the real deal.

    I know folks can find outliers, but for about the 20th season in a row, I don’t want a pitcher coming from Oakland. It’s just not a club or ballpark I think typically shows pitcher output representative of their performance in 29 other ballparks.

    Agreed, Bumgarner looks a lot like Bundy except with which hand he throws with. No interest. No more washed up vets, the young guys in the system have far outpitched them this year. And last year. Pretty much every washed up vet the Twins sign pitch as expected in fact. I'm not sure why people continue to be hesitant to give the young guys a shot when all you have to do is look at the roster and see the odds of the young guys overperforming is significantly higher than the grizzled vets. Sort the Twins pitching staff by age, draw the line between the ages of 27 and 28. It's not even close. Heck, handicap it for the vets and draw it between 26 and 27 and give them Griffen Jax out of pity. Still not close. Youth movement full steam ahead. Also, Bumgarner is owed about 50M through the 2024 season, it wouldn't take Kirilloff to acquire him. AZ should have to throw in one of their top prospects to get another team to take him off of their hands.

    This would be easier if Archer was the one who was struggling because I think his stuff will play well in the pen. Bundy doesn't have stuff though so I think he'd get rocked there too. I think once you get enough of the starters back you just cut bait. I know the Twins don't WANT to turn to Canterino, SWR and Varland next time they're in a bind, but it's unlikely they'd be worse than Bundy, and they're going to need to get a look at some point anyway.

    Seems like the Twins are really crowding their system with near ready MLB players, I wouldn't be surprised if the strategy is to take a young HS project. Though I suppose 17-year-old JC players fit that bill too. They could maybe wait out Lesko too.

    Hope it's only a sprained ankle for Rodriguez. 7 Day IL for Canterino is only an illness, so that's good news.

    Seems like the one thing Perez can be counted on for is his streakiness. At this time in 2019 he was actually pitching really well too, yet we pretty much only remember how it ended. I wouldn't trust him and I don't put much stock in his recent track record.

    I think you're attributing too much to Baldelli, good or bad. There's next to no chance that the decision to limit innings and manage health is his call. He maybe has a seat at the table for these discussions, but he's almost certainly not King Arthur in this scenario.

    There's definitely some room for improvement here, but I'm not sure I like using Miranda, a rookie as an example. After an extremely rough start, the guys has an OPS over 1.100 the last two weeks, he's clearly just starting to figure things out.

    Spencer Steer has hit more HR in the past two weeks than Austin Martin has in his professional career. Steer has hit as many HR this year than Martin hit his entire college career.

    I wouldn't sell low on him, but my opinion of him was never as high as most, and I'd guess there are quite a few teams out there that would feel the same. Without the XBH, he's going to have to approach Luis Arraez territory in on base skills to be an every day player. And I don't say that with any exaggeration because at the beginning of the season we were all debating whether Arraez was actually an every day player due to the fact that he didn't get any XBH.

    With how poor the Saints starters have been, it’s hard to understand why those big three pitching prospects are still in Witchita. I mean if Sands, Gonzalez and Rodriguez are STILL the best emergency starters sitting in St. Paul, I think you need to re-evaluate.

    Their long term health is not at risk. No reasonable person would believe otherwise.

    Yeah, I'd prefer this stuff wasn't relevant, but due to the vaccination status of several players and the weakened status of the team, we've once again found ourselves in that area where the baseball and non-baseball venn diagrams overlap. ****Moderator Note**** I understand that even on more benign topics, Randball Stu's articles aren't for everyone. If this topic upsets you, please move on to another. We have plenty of other threads to talk about other things. This won't be turned into a battleground.

    What different posting privileges are you referring to? TD's stance has always been that COVID is real and dangerous and vaccination is the responsible thing to do. We have always made it clear that we would not let this place be a platform to validate and disseminate misinformation about anti-vaccination.

    To be fair, nine other starters have already started games, so it's fair to say that he was the organization's 10th option. I would have preferred him to be the 13th option after Canterino, Woods-Richardson and Balazovic, but there've been plenty of years where he'd have been the 6th or 7th option. Like maybe even last year.

    Athletes will go to all kinds of lengths to get a competitive advantage, yes, I'd think anyone who truly had winning as their top priority would get vaccinated. But I understand that's not every athlete's top priority.

    Yeah, I think Gray and Coloumbe were the only ones placed on the IL AFTER the report. Joe Ryan pitched in the Olympics last year though so it's not him, they all had to be vaccinated. But good lord Kepler, if you're not going to get vaccinated, find a better soundbite. Was he trying to stir the pot? That quote was an awful decision.

    I like Gordon. Because of that, I’d set him free. Forget about the Kirilloff and Lewis situation, Spencer Steer is ready and hopefully Martin is soon as well. The Twins are in position to not have to sweat losing fringe MLB talent. Let Gordon find a team that has the need and roster space to give him a legit shot at reaching his ceiling. I will not be jealous, angry or chagrined if he does so elsewhere.
