Article: The Time to Trade Kyle Gibson Is Now
gman replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
must be nice to be one of those teams that regularly develops good players and the fans don't think they need to automatcally consider trading them for more prospects. -
It is interesting had all but 2 maybe 3 Twins hitters have looked lost or just plain bad this year. Hope not,but maybe last year was an aberration. Maybe new hitting theories being incorporated into the system that players are having a tough time adjusting to.

Article: Week in Review: Sinking Ship
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When the year started, I expected to keep an eye certain players in the minors. I just wasn't expecting them to be named Sano, Buxton and Palanco. Currently there are 10 teams in the American league with better records than the Twins. We could finish better than a couple of them, but passing 6 teams to get into a wild card race will be difficult. Catching Cleveland doesn't look like a too likely option either. Shopping players for the rest of the season seems the most likely course of action. Unfortunately our record is bad and any tradeable players are causing the win/loss results. Seen too much of this the last 8 years. They could hold second half auditions for the 2019 roster, but I just as soon they not bring up players until they are truly ready, I've also seen enough failure from our star prospects. I'll continue to watch minor league baseball and next years draft standings.- 36 replies

Article: Don't Give Up On These Twins Quite Yet
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After almost 10 years of mediocre to bad baseball its difficult to get excited about what might happen. They had a good month last year and a good one in 2016. Anything other than that is hard to remember. Yep they may trade some people next month or get some guys off the injured list or pigs may fly, but I've seen too much of this kind of baseball. Judging by the crowd sizes at the games so have alot of other people.- 54 replies

Nice to see that Griffin Jax made a couple of starts for Ft Myers this past week. Nothing spectacular, but just keep moving up 1 level per year in the time he has available.

Article: The Difficult Dozier Decision
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just like this year, I expect many free agents will learn that the market next year won't be what is was in the past. Seemingly last winter we tried to trade Dozier and the best offer apparently was DeLeon. Other teams don't seem to value him as much as Twins do. Will he really be the Twins best second base option for the next 3-4 years? What other position value does he have? Firstbase and DH type players don't seem to get paid that well unless they are the top super stars. As a firstbase/DH, I think Dozier would be placed in just above the Morrison category and we know what he got. Based on these factors, he may become a very affordable option to be retained by the Twins. -
Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
gman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Once Morrison signed, there was not a spot for either Grossman or Vargas. To me, Vargas has shown enough to at least demonstrate an ability to have a typical Morrison type season. Morrison never came close to hitting 38 homers prior to last season and with regular AB's Vargas could probably have at least one 30 homer season in his career. Obviously the value of a potential Vargas 30 homer season is not that great and for the same reason Morrison won't have a real long career in Minnesota.- 65 replies

Article: Twelve's A Crowd: Twins Are Rolling In Relief
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The 10 day rule becomes a new way for pitchers (as well as position players) to breakin to the bigs. A couple trips back and forth getting the feet wet and confortable and maybe the big league staff becomes more confident in what the newbie has. The optimistic position is that besides trying to find spots in the bullpen for 2018 for pitchers in waiting is that the list seems to add 3-4 pitchers a year for at least the next several years.- 105 replies

Why Yu Darvish Will Be Cheaper Than Everyone Thinks
gman commented on Andrew Thares's blog entry in Rounding Third
Maybe it's something simpler. Maybe all the statistical analysis used to managed results on the field has also crept into the management of team salaries. As noted team have seen that big contracts for one player rarely pays the length of the contract. As we saw last year when the big boppers didn't get the contracts previously handed out to big homerun hitter. Stanton got his big contract a couple years back. But it doesn't appear he generated a lot of trade interest and so even at his young age trying to unload that contract was very difficult for the Marlins.- 14 comments

Article: Twelve's A Crowd: Twins Are Rolling In Relief
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Certainly spring training (not soon enough) will provide some interesting battles. Instead of whose the filler while watching for other teams discards, we actually should have battles between good and better with other teams watching us. No doubt there will be someone sent to Rochester who pitched 8 innings with no earned runs given up and 10 srikeouts. I expect a spring training trade or 2.- 105 replies

Article: Twelve's A Crowd: Twins Are Rolling In Relief
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With a stable bullpen and long on potential support at Rochester the days of cringing when the bullpen call is made hopefully will be over. The starting pitching may improve by just not having so many innings blowup once a reliever is called in. Some starters may be on shorter leashes, which won't be so bad either. Although for a pitcher like Mejia, he will have to pitch longer to be on a short leash. Also hopefully, the better pen will allow our hitters a chance to come back when the starters fail early and some of those 10-8 losses will turn into 8-6 wins.- 105 replies

Article: What If Miguel Is Really Kyle?
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree we should trade Sano when he's "39". We've waited what, 45 years to have a hitter like this in the lineup. Heaven forbid he hasn't made the hall of fame after 2 whole seasons. One of which he played half a season with a severe leg injury. Third, first, DH or whatever you bat him cleanup just as much as possible. Is there a bat with comparable potential in the Twins minor league system. I don't think so. I would take him everyday over a starting pitcher who plays maybe 30 games a year for 5 or 6 innings. -
1. As already pointed out, Joe's offseason home is in Florida not Minnesota. For a discounted 2-3 year contact, I see him prefering to go home every night and be with his family. 2. Firstbase is usually a position assigned to a power and production bat. Joe has never been that. Unless he suddenly rediscovers a 900 plus OPS, with RBI ability, his playing time would greatly decline over the life of an extension. 3. With 13 men pitching staffs, bench roles are at a premiun and not usually allocated to part time firstbasemen/DH's with little power. Joe was a great catcher, but I don't see him continue to risk his health to hang on for a few more years. That is, I think he retires.

Article: Building A Super Bullpen
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins will very probably have an 8 man bullpen in 2018, with I think Pressly being the longest tenured member. A 50% or more turnover in the pen over the course of the season because of poor peformance, injury or hopefully pressure from improved minor league pitchers seem reasonable to expect. Since its not very likely they sign even 3 good free agent relievers, nor do they have 3 "known" dominant relievers on the roster, the bulk of the bullpen will be in development stage. In other words, I think wait and see is the story.- 53 replies

Lots of potential here. With most of these players more than 1 year away, it will be interesting to see if the recent changes to system admin, coaches and I presume processes bring out a higher return on the minor league system than we have been used to seeing. When I look as this list, I have a hard time not trying to squeeze 30 players into the top 20 slots.

Article: Twins With Options On The Trade Front
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't make a major trade of prospects until I know the Twins are a major WS contender. I don't know that. So I don't think 2018 is a go for it season. Hopefully they are a surprise and added a couple more wins to the 2017 total and continued roster development. But still too many question marks on what we have.- 78 replies

Article: Who's Number One?: Minnesota's Top Prospect
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like most number 1's, I don't think it matters much who is. Could be 6-8 different players. I see a lot of talented players rising to the major league roster over the next 2-4 years and looking forward to their impact on a 85 win team. -
My hope is the same every year. That 3 or 4 will become impact arm in the Twins bullpen. This was a pretty amazing year in the bullpens for Twins minors especially when you consider none of the top talked about relief prospects from the beginning of the year was in the mix.

I guess a question would be where does Littell fall into the Twins pitching plans. Is he ready to compete with Romero & Gonsalves in 2018 for a spot in the Twins rotation? Looking at his overall numbers, including innings pitched, he may be ahead. I would think all 3 could at least start 2018 at Rochester with best pitcher as first callup.

Gibson 2nd best pitcher on Twins, Molitor gets unfair criticism
gman commented on huhguy's blog entry in Blog huhguy
Gibson has good enough "stuff", unfortunately he has rarely brought it to games the past 2 years. Right now I would plan to sign him in off season arbitration for next year more as a cheap place holder than as a proven 3 or 4 in the rotation. Hopefully 2 of Trevor May, Romero or Gonsalves will fight their way into the rotation at some point in 2018. I don't see much in the offseason free agent starter bin that I would want to budget 3 years for and Gibson will only cost 1 year and maybe 5-6 mil.
