No Surprise: Twins Exercise Options for Kepler and Polanco
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you watch Kepler hit over the years, you notice that he frequently dropped his back shoulder and bent his knees a lot more to apparently get under baseballs and drive them over the high right field wall. Unfortunately that never worked out for him too well and frequently resulted in grounders to second. The second half of last year and starting earlier in the year, but not much earlier, he stopped dropping his shoulder and settled for hitting loud line drives off the wall. He also managed to hit the ball over the left field fence, which he has never done with any regularity. Maybe seeing Lewis, just being a hitter, instead of a home run slugger and the players meeting where they discussed being hitters instead of sluggers, helped him more than any other Twin. Question is, will he keep it up going forward? -
I can see the Twins picking up the option, but I would think they would more likely trade him than sign him for a 3 year contract..

I don't see the Twins coughing up $500mil for any player. I really wonder if anyone will pay that much for an injured player, probably. As far as the young everyday players go, we all HOPE they will the makings of a very solid lineup for years. None have played a full, healthy season in the majors yet. I think Julian comes the closest but has only played 109 games in the bigs. So I don't expect them to do more than firm up their starting rotation plans, whether that be through promotion from the minors or signing a lesser free agent. I would like to see a magic season of the team getting further in the playoffs and I expect them to win their division without adding anyone at this point. Lest we forget, the Twins didn't even get in the free agent game as most players got signed out of free agency in about a 2 week period a couple years ago. I can see most of these players gone before the team exhales.

It would make sense for him to pitch in relief to begin this year in the minors, maybe at Ft Myers until the weather warms up a bit. I could see him working up to 3 or 4 innings a game and possibly go to the Twins after mid season, But he has been out for most of his time since drafted as mentioned, so getting his control as well as arm strength back will take a while. Any mention anywhere of his off season program?

Schedule 60-80 innings in 2024, at whatever level. It would be great to have Canterino as a "stud" starting pitcher added to the rotation in 2025 with maybe 120 innings thrown. Then a possible 140-150 innings a year pitched in 2026. Don't limit his talent. Relief is good, strong starting talent is better,

Alcala - Yes. Keep Alcala, pitching is hard to find. Unless he has a permanent injury not disclosed to the fans, he has been worth saving for the past two years waiting out the injury. 3 years ago he was expected to be a late inning set up man. Luplow - No. Multiple outfielders available in the system plus probably in free agency late spring training next year. See hat we need in March of 2024. Gordon - No. Multiple infielders available in the system, plus late spring training next year. See what we need in March of 2024.

How Should the Twins Treat First Base This Offseason?
gman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First base is well covered among; Kirilloff, Miranda, Julian, and Polanco, Others could include Farmer, Larnach, Wallner(would be the biggest target), and Severino. The team doesn't need to use resources at first base but instead save those money for pitching or possibly an extra outfielder. Although, I think the outfield is covered already if a little shy on experience.- 14 replies

We're worried about the rookies? Really? After something like 180 years without a playoff victory composed of teams who were not entirely rookies, I'm not worried about rookies. I'm more concerned that the veterans still won't show up with their bats. I expect the starting pitchers to do well and the bullpen will be okay.

Lewis has certainly had a good year. He definitely looks like a candidate to start next year at Wichita. His first year in the system and he has 101 innings pitched with very good numbers. Could he make 3A next year, seems possible.

The Twins Were Right to Gamble on Julien
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm constantly amazed by how many people on this site are so ready to knock players who haven't made the Hall of Fame by their 20th game in the majors. So for those of you too lazy to do any research the following: 2019 - Julian was drafted but didn't play because of an arm injury. Part of the reason he was available n the 18th round. 2020 -No minor league season 2021 - Julian's first season in professional ball 2022 - second season in professional ball 2023 -- That's this year for some of you, his third season. He played 167 games at second base, prior to his time with the Twins. So it just might take him a little time to be come a gold glove level player. But he does lead the Twins in OBP and of the top six Twins in OBP the list includes Julian, Jeffers, Lewis, Wallner and Kirilloff., the sixth being Solano. FYI - Wallner was also drafted in 2019. So for those who are both knocking the front office for bringing up guys too early and too late, at least look to see when a guy got his first minor league playing time.- 53 replies

Position players pitching in a blowout, so what? That's been happening for 100 years probably more. I've seen pitchers pinch hit in critical situations. I've seen pitchers pinch run because they were the fastest player available. I've seen a game where a pitcher was sent to play left field, because someone got injured and there were no position players left. I saw a game where a starting pitcher was moved to another position, while a reliever came in to get one batter out. Then the starter was moved back to the mound. It's part of the game.

It's Time to Move Carlos Correa Down in the Lineup
gman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Correa's problems are because of foot pain, he needs to change his foot ware. The term plantar fascitis is going out of style in place of the true description which is "plantar heal pain." People have heal pain because generally they land on their heal when they walk. So duh they have heal pain which radiates down their foot. The solution unless you are trying to sell something is to go barefoot or wear a barefoot style/minimalist shoe. When you walk or run land forefoot or mid foot but never on your heal. Generally your heel pain with proper foot ware and walking pattern will go away within a week. Secondary problems caused by shoes are misalignment of the skeleton resulting in ankle, knee, hip and shoulder problems. I would expect if Correa does not fix his footwear, he will have the problem for possibly years along with developing shoulder problems. Something that is more natural for the human foot and skeleton. You know like people walked and ran for ever until Nike came along in the early 70's and added 2" of heels to shoes. Eventually that became the style. The only people that had heal pain prior to that were women who wore fancy high healed shoes. Prior to 1970 the common tennis shoe was a PF Flyer of Ked's style which were flat shoes. Mens dress shoes were flats and military/work shoes were flats. Unless you were a cowboy who wore boots with heels to hold the stirrup while seated on your horse. Too long a post.- 22 replies

Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month - August 2023
gman replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The number of players having good seasons in the Twins minor league system is more than I can remember in a long time. Cudos to the coaching staff, as well as to the players. Jenkins 89 plate appearances overall and only 9 strikeouts. Harry with 4 strikeouts and 13 walks in 98 plate appearances. Martin with a 14% strikeout rate and 13% walk rate is a free swinger compared to those 2 first year players. He has hit in only 2 double plays this year and only 13 in his career in 1049 plate appearances. Sounds like a good first or second place hitter along with 66 steals in 80 attempts for his career.- 29 replies

Andrew has had a good year and deserved a shot. I just hope they play him. They certainly have playing guys long enough who haven't deserved a shot.

One Month into the Jorge López for Dylan Floro Trade
gman replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins could simply have released Lopez. They could simply release Floro now. My assumption is they don't think they have someone better than Floro waiting in the wings. They got something for Lopez which is better than nothing, maybe not the super reliever anyone wanted but you weren't ever going to get that for Lopez anyway. I would take any of Stuart, Paddock, Alcala or Varland over Floro when the time comes. They have a month to try to get the bullpen in as decent a shape as possible and good luck with that.- 24 replies

The more batters that come up through the minors with disciplined strikes zones, the better for the Twins, as well as other teams. The Twins currently have more hitters climbing through the system with high walk to strikeout rates then at any time I can remember. Future Twins(perhaps) Martin and Prato both have exceptional walk/strikeout rates. The pitchers may also be helped by having a consistent strike zone that they have to learn to advance. Pitchers may have to evolve to be pitchers again instead of just hard throwers.

White Sox Have Chance to Do Funniest Thing Ever
gman replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't remember Ozzie Smith playing for Chicago?😀 -
I think you stay with a 5 man rotation, with different skipped starters. Give rotation breaks to Ober, Gray and Lopez. Ryan has had a long break and Maeda got close to 2 months off earlier. Keuchel has had half a year break almost. I think mostly they need the best health and most rest posssible for the playoffs. To me it doesn't matter if they win the division by 10 games or 1.

I think 2 years/25mil with 2 additional mutually option years at similar rates. Will he be close to 40 at the end , sure. But with mutual option kinda of a no lose option.

With the Correa/Buxton deals staring the F/O in the face, they may lock some players up lock term, but they also have to heavily weigh that injury risk factor. Right now neither Buxton nor Correa look too good through the end of their contracts, especially Buxton. Maybe next year is still a little more flexible, but what happens in 2 years (if) Lee, Lewis, Kirilloff and Julian have locked up the other infield ad left field position, when everyone says shift Correa to third. He may simply not be the best option for third and Lee or Lewis may no longer be options for shortstop. Buxton isn't an option for center field right now and may not be in the future and he is not a good enough hitter for DH. Can the team really take on another long term deal for a player that can't play a position they are signed to?
