The 1987 had one outstanding starter (Viola), one very good starter (Blyleven late in his career), one marginal starter (Straker, in his one decent season). In the bullpen they had Reardon (who was just OK at best during the regular season, although he was more important to the team than his stats would indicate) and Berenguer (who was pretty good). Their #4 and #5 starters were worse than anything we put in those slots last years. The rest of the bullpen would have been released by now if they were on this year's team (except Atherton.)
They won with front-line young talent (Hrbek, Puckett, Viola), solid second-tier talent (Gaetti, Gagne, Brunansky), veteran leadership and credibility (Blyleven, Reardon), and a playoff format that helped hide the lack of pitching depth (Viola and Blyleven pitched 57.1 of the 104 total postseason innings) In the games they won, Blyleven, Viola, Berenguer, and Reardon pitched 55.2 of 63 innings.
