The Twins Don't Need Another Righty Setup Man
Shaitan replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A #2 is going to cost a lot of prospect capital. Probably what Mahle cost, even for a 1/2 year rental. At the time of the Mahle trade they had that abundance of questionable defense IF prospects that were somewhat redundant. Do they have something similar to move now? Plus, most trades for a high end pitcher will include the other team giving up a prospect SP. I'd love another top end pitcher, but I don't see it happening. Other than left handed outfielders who are nearing the no-longer-prospects threshold, I don't see that much redundancy in the minor league pipeline.- 45 replies

The Twins Don't Need Another Righty Setup Man
Shaitan replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm amused how many TD articles tore the team apart this off-season for their moves, but now the site is full of suggestions to keep the team as is, or only call up from the minors. That's ignoring all the "logjams." (Yeah, yeah...payroll...I know... But the themes here seem contradictory, even if those arguments came from different posters. It's the Internet. I have a short attn span.)- 45 replies

The Twins Don't Need Another Righty Setup Man
Shaitan replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The team should consider any move that makes them better. It's not just about a late inning in the playoffs scenario. You need to get to the playoffs first. There will also likely be injuries in the coming months. As is, the bullpen is acceptable. It could be better, but there's definitely room for improvement and without giving up significant prospects or payroll.- 45 replies

Twins Trade Deadline: The Bailey Ober Threshold
Shaitan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Any move that makes your team better is worth consideration. That includes a SP5. You can't win in the playoffs if you don't get there. It's a long season. And that's the move I expect: a middling trade for somebody deemed a #4-5 starter who will be insurance if Paddack (or somebody else) goes down again. Otherwise we're watching Festa, Varland, and Dobnak 3.0 or, god help us, Dallas Kuechel.- 54 replies

I don't know. Isn't a 0 WAR a major league replacement player?. That means it's likely that some scrub from AAA will perform worse. Eh, that's really all I have to say here. Fundamentally I think we both agree that Farmer's 2025 is disappointing. I personally think that whoever is next in line would be even worse. I think he's vulnerable to somebody pushing him out, but nobody is doing it yet. I don't expect much of the AAA players named. Except Lee, but Lewis needs to come back to force it. But if Larnach , Wallner, and Kepler wouldn't all suck it up against LHP at the same time it would be a game changer. Castro to 2B more or less full-time (with Julien/Lee/Martin in consideration in some way). Then Farmer gets 1 start per week, instead of 2-3 like now. Or maybe he's out because Martin/Castro/Miranda/Lee can play the whole IF. The more I think about it, I want the Twins go get a full-time corner outfielder (under contract for 2025), possibly parting with Larnach and Kirillof, and then through the trickle-down, pushing Margot or Farmer out. Farmer's biggest selling point right now is: in a playoff game that's tied at 1, who would be your defensive sub for Miranda. But Miranda is probably at DH in the playoffs with Lewis or Lee at 3B anyway.

Four Takeaways From the Minnesota Twins' First Half
Shaitan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
1) April stats are overrated 2) This team needs at least one everyday corner outfielder (especially going into 2025) 3) Prospects are fun! 4) This team has positional player depth and, dare I say, health? Two years in a row with fewer than 10 pitchers starting games is relatively unheard of in today's MLB. Which is quite fortunate, as the SP depth is less this year.- 73 replies

I don't get the argument here. If it doesn't matter who replaces him, then it also doesn't matter if they keep him. But, whatever. Where's that dead horse icon that was promised a while back?

DH maybe. But based on last year I don't think they change Lewis' position midseason. That didn't work so well the last time. I wonder how many reps Lee is taking at 2B between games now. That's the obvious fit. And rookies tend to get forced in the "play anything until there's an opening" role. I don't love Lee as a "super utility" but I think that's his best fit for 2024. And with Rocco's lineups, he'll be in the lineup almost everyday.

I mostly agree. But Julien has to earn it and he lacks versatility. He has to be an everyday player or at least platoon, versus utility. As long as Castro/Lee can play capable SS, they don't need another at the position.

Just be happy he's where he is on the depth chart. Without depth like Lee and versatility like Castro, Farmer would be playing every day right now. So my indirect question is: if Farmer is cut, who is next to play the bench IF role? (Do I think Farmer is playing below expectations, to be polite -- yes. But as the second backup IF, there are much worse problems to have.)

Too much risk in young pitchers, unless you're talking a generational talent.

Absolutely not. With positional flexibility, in theory a team like the Twins could just rotate their starting 9 to put the best matchup to the plate each and every at bat. Or the rule would say you have to re-enter to play the same position. And if a rule needs a bunch of asterisks, it's too complicated and should not be considered. Every new rule creates new problems. Plus, I like baseball as a team sport with chance involved. Just no.

I hope Wallner has turned the corner, but I see a pattern in recent years. Kirillof, Larnach and Wallner all look good when they get called up. Then the league figures them out and the cycle continues. In short, I hope he's a near everyday player but I won't believe it for a few hundred AB.

The ASG is the only place where individual April stats matter -- and the Twins were awful in April. Personally, I could care less who is picked. ASG is a popularity contest for the kids. Let the "deserving" players who weren't picked have a 4 day break with their families. That sounds like a good consolation prize to me.

Lee's positional flexibility is what allowed them to hit Miranda there too. How is Lee's defense looking? I only watch on Gameday.

Sorry everyone. I tuned back it after the Miranda double after tuning out during the HOU second inning rally. For your sake, I'll sign out again. I accept full responsibility. -

I feel like Alcala starts with a clean inning break more often than inheriting runners. Test time. -

Diaz sees as many pitches as Twins in the entire 1st inning.
