Didn't see this move coming. So much for thinking we'd see Martin at 2B in a close game.

Some new hot takes on Margot.

Thanks to the contract (seriously) he's a reasonable flex option for the roster. They can call him up and DFA him over and over again with no claims... Worst case scenario is they lose him. Of course, I'd rather he pitched well.

I heard the bats break easily. /rimshot

Here's a whole discussion about that
  6. Shaitan
dare I say it: the all star break is too long? (I also think they should play 9 months a year, haha.) let's get the second half underway!

I think this site overhypes everyone not named Vasquez/Margot 😆 But I like what I'm reading today here and in some other threads. Sounds promising if he can play adequate OF.

Remember when people said that this FO only drafted bat-first corner outfielders?

I'm open to trading Julien (or any player who seems to lack a long-term, non-utility position) if the return is right. This is not. I also question why the Twins would want to make Boston better if they're the top competition for the wild card right now. Broader question: what is worse? Trading in-division or with the teams in wild card contention? I'd definitely say the latter, with an exclusion for the division leader. Zero short-term harm in a trade with bottom dwellers.

I read this whole article and I still don't know what happened with Castro at the ASG. Did he play? What position? When?

It's weird to me that they only carried 1 LHP in most of the LOOGY era, but carry more now. Eh, that's baseball in 2024 as compared to 2012, I guess.

Knoblauch (okay, not recent, but since it's in the OP's user name)

The steroid user? If you're going to cite bloodlines, you have to mention the rest...

I'll add the intangible that this team doesn't give up. Most games are close, including scoring 7 in the 9th the other week. If they can keep that spirit up their odds are good.

Been wearing dad shoes for about 10 years here too. Feels so much better.
  17. Shaitan
    Because the ASG isn't today.

The money isn't the point. That said, I'd hope he had insurance. In which case, the Vikings probably wouldn't pay his family. It's never simple.

The many philosophies of the deadline are fascinating. Many are go big or go home. I'm a bit more of the "trade your pocket change for upgrades" personally.

A #2 is going to cost a lot of prospect capital. Probably what Mahle cost, even for a 1/2 year rental. At the time of the Mahle trade they had that abundance of questionable defense IF prospects that were somewhat redundant. Do they have something similar to move now? Plus, most trades for a high end pitcher will include the other team giving up a prospect SP. I'd love another top end pitcher, but I don't see it happening. Other than left handed outfielders who are nearing the no-longer-prospects threshold, I don't see that much redundancy in the minor league pipeline.

I'm amused how many TD articles tore the team apart this off-season for their moves, but now the site is full of suggestions to keep the team as is, or only call up from the minors. That's ignoring all the "logjams." (Yeah, yeah...payroll...I know... But the themes here seem contradictory, even if those arguments came from different posters. It's the Internet. I have a short attn span.)

The team should consider any move that makes them better. It's not just about a late inning in the playoffs scenario. You need to get to the playoffs first. There will also likely be injuries in the coming months. As is, the bullpen is acceptable. It could be better, but there's definitely room for improvement and without giving up significant prospects or payroll.
  23. Shaitan
Agreed, but he needs seasoning. I like him at SP7 right now. Spot starts and gaining experience. Berrios was also pretty had that first September.
  24. Shaitan
Any move that makes your team better is worth consideration. That includes a SP5. You can't win in the playoffs if you don't get there. It's a long season. And that's the move I expect: a middling trade for somebody deemed a #4-5 starter who will be insurance if Paddack (or somebody else) goes down again. Otherwise we're watching Festa, Varland, and Dobnak 3.0 or, god help us, Dallas Kuechel.

I don't know. Isn't a 0 WAR a major league replacement player?. That means it's likely that some scrub from AAA will perform worse. Eh, that's really all I have to say here. Fundamentally I think we both agree that Farmer's 2025 is disappointing. I personally think that whoever is next in line would be even worse. I think he's vulnerable to somebody pushing him out, but nobody is doing it yet. I don't expect much of the AAA players named. Except Lee, but Lewis needs to come back to force it. But if Larnach , Wallner, and Kepler wouldn't all suck it up against LHP at the same time it would be a game changer. Castro to 2B more or less full-time (with Julien/Lee/Martin in consideration in some way). Then Farmer gets 1 start per week, instead of 2-3 like now. Or maybe he's out because Martin/Castro/Miranda/Lee can play the whole IF. The more I think about it, I want the Twins go get a full-time corner outfielder (under contract for 2025), possibly parting with Larnach and Kirillof, and then through the trickle-down, pushing Margot or Farmer out. Farmer's biggest selling point right now is: in a playoff game that's tied at 1, who would be your defensive sub for Miranda. But Miranda is probably at DH in the playoffs with Lewis or Lee at 3B anyway.
