    In the past I was skeptical of these rumors. For most indie teams, it would be a great opportunity but the Saints have a unique brand and a strong following. But I wonder if Covid has changed that tune a bit.

    How is it sensational to report the facts? Here's the headline I see on ESPN: Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa charged with DUI stemming from February arrest, court docs show.

    Analytics definitely existed in 2005. This is interesting, if only because the two players somehow do remind me of each other -- I think it's more about the spark their personalities provide to the clubhouse though, which is pretty irrelevant to this discussion and completely subjective.

    I disagree with your entire post, but this part is easily refuted by looking at alcohol-related statistics. It may not make him a "bad person" whatever that subjective term means, but it makes him unfit to be a manager. He repeatedly breaks laws, endangers lives, and shows addictive behavior. Those are not qualities I want in charge of my organization.

    I definitely think it's okay to go with Blankenhorn/Gordon as a fallback plan, but to watch the various markets for better fits. I expect them to look for a depth piece with either (or both) OF and SS experience. Blankenhorn doesn't play there to my knowledge.

    I wonder about Arraez's future too. He played this role in 2019, more or less.

    I think the defense was much improved in 2020 and given the short season, we shouldn't make too much of the stats anyway. I also agree with the premise that the team should improve DEF wherever possible (but not that they should favorite it over other elements of the game). I think there is room to do so in replacing Marwin. Replacing Rosario for Kiriloff/Rooker/Cave may not be an improvement, but time will tell.

    I think an important distinction is what type of backup? One that plays every day for a month, or every day for 10 days during a brief IL stint? FWIW, the Twins seem to view Kepler as the latter. I'm not sure I have an option either way.

    This depends so much on the makeup of the team and flexibility of other position players too. I'd weight the value based on how many AB the team expects them to get. If we're talking 350+ I want more Marwin-style and less Adrianza (or Punto or Newman). If under 350, more of a classic, defense-first type. (I also expect two utility players on most rosters -- one of each of these types -- in the modern era.)

    That was my joke. I can't imagine a team taking a player with so little experience and such poor performance in his most recent sample. Last year he was a long shot. This year I don't think it's worth considering.

    It would be a nice surprise, but I never thought we was a top prospect. He was a Twins top prospect...during a spell when the team was very bad. In other words, I think his status was inflated.

    Twins have made a lot of late offseason deals under this FO. Lynn and Morrison bombed, but Marwin and (I think others I can't name right now) worked out. I expect more of that philosophy this year for useful role players (bench, bullpen, etc).

    Pitchers should always grab the long-term deal when it's available, due to both volatility and injury risk at the position.

    Yeah, I expect more limitations on the QO in the new CBA. Perhaps a set # can be offered or something like that. Smaller market teams still need some kind of compensation in return, but it's not working as planned. But it's also going to be a super weird year for negotiations.

    It's a good year to get the QO offer, as there will be more 1 year deals than normal anyway and player's are then free from the tag for the rest of their careers (assuming the CBA doesn't change).

    It's weird that the Central is making the splashy moves so far.

    Zero risk to a DFA claim in October when you have 33 on the roster. Worst case for the Twins is they drop them later (which is, of course, less than ideal for the player).

    Such a ridiculous idea. If a team wants 8 players standing in CF they should be allowed to do so. Rules for the sake of rules rarely add any benefit to anybody. They only add confusion. Also, how is "more offense" going to help the pace of play issue. Pick an argument, Manfred. You know what games are the fastest? Pitcher's duels.

    That's what Spring Training is for. Hopefully we get one next year.

    I think that's the most realistic option, but I don't blame him trying for two first. I imagine a deal similar to his last contract, but with the option having different terms.
