  1. Definitely. I don't want to go off-topic, but other contenders have signed a lot of versatile 10th men this year. I'm guessing last year's Twins are part of the inspiration. All around, this team is positionally flexible when there is an injury. Sano, Arraez, Gonzalez, Adrianza, Kepler, Cave...
  2. I think it's telling that the Berrios case is about $.5m, yet many people are saying "what's another $10m to Donaldson?" It might feel like play money to us, but it's very real. I also expect it to be resolved, unless the Twins front office wants another arbitration case to set precedent.
  3. He can play RF when they trade Rosario for an ace
  4. I could see a 1 year placeholder signing like these names, with the option to dump them if a prospect is ready. The 26th roster spot may allow for that. But I also expect a steady rotation between the IF and C. With Garver, Gonzalez, Adrianza, Arraez, and Austudillo also capable of playing multiple positions, I think we'll see a lot of that. They could simply rotate who plays at 1B and 3B in a rotation to keep everyone fresh. Then let Gordon, Rooker, and Kiriloff push their way onto the roster.
  5. Signing two pitchers (Pineda and Hill) who will miss the start of the year is an interesting approach. I'd rather finish strong than start strong, I guess. You can't have too much depth. Bailey. Ug. But on a 1 year deal who cares.
  6. The problem with a bunch of lottery tickets is that the pitcher who makes the best impression in March probably isn't the best pitcher in July. Isn't that how the Twins let Anibal Sanchez get away? I don't exactly regret that move, as it seemed like the right thing at the time. But ST is difficult to assess a project/comeback-type player and you can only dedicate so many roster spots to that type of thing (as a contender).
  7. Sure. But why do you need to say that at all? The point of a trade is to be mutually beneficial to both teams.
  8. Of course he has flaws. If he didn't he'd be in MLB. That's why the minor leagues exist.
  9. I dislike the whole concept of "winning" a trade. Teams don't make trades to "win" against their competitor GMs. It doesn't work like that. Both teams are seeking mutually beneficial deals. Otherwise trades wouldn't happen.
  10. New 2019 strategy: put a hitter with terrible splits between two mashers. Make the other team choose if a LOOGY is worth it. In other words: make your lineup worse for 1 batter, but better for the 2 that sandwich him.
  11. Imagine seeing Boston sign Perez this week.
  12. I'm open to them as placeholders. So much depends if Sano moves to 1B or where Kirilloff fits (replacing Rosario or at 1B).
  13. Pineda's always pitched pretty well. He's just never been healthy for any kind of stretch.
  14. Littel isn't going back to starting. They moved him to RP in AAA for a reason -- and it immediately had better results.
  15. Am I the only one who read the "pending a physical" line in the OP, then scrolled down to see that photo choice?
  16. I expect one significant SP yet and 1 SP project, similar to Perez last year who will compete for the 5th spot with the rookies.
  17. I notice there hasn't been a single mention of his stats on base stealing. I'm not really concerned (though I always want a gunner for that), but it's telling of how we both rate defense these days and how few teams run. I do think it was a bit a bit of a liability last year between Castro/Garver. Just not a serious one since nobody bothers with basestealing anyway.
  18. Castro didn't get a single AB in the post-season and I wouldn't be surprised if (fingers crossed on a return in 2020) Avila is the same. A solid signing at a decent price for a non-premium role on the team.
  19. Which was published 2 hours after I said this. (Maybe the STrib article was before that though.) Edit: Okay, I can't read the difference between AM/PM. Anyway, that still doesn't really change my original point, even if 1/3 of my original comment was reported somewhere.
  20. I agree with both your comments and Mike Sixel's. But we also haven't even reached the Winter Meetings yet. It's waaay too early to judge the offseason.
  21. I agree with your first 1.5 sentences, but where is the evidence that they are "being cute" and "low-balling"? Real evidence, not "somebody said the Twins offered this to Darvish 2 years ago."
  22. Do you work for the Twins? Otherwise I don't see how you could possibly know both what they offered to Wheeler or have on the table right now. Not to mention their motivation. Anything reported about contract negotiations is based on hearsay or rumors. Unless the reporter literally saw the offer, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
  23. I haven't read a single "but what about the draft pick" post this year.
