  1. If two picks become contributors it is considered a successful draft. BA grades drafts.
  2. It wasn't a stretch though. The week before the draft he was rated as high as 3rd. Any time you can find a lefty that throws 96-98 it's a no brainer to take him. It was unlucky he pitched less than 100 innings, in his first 3 seasons.
  3. Right now the key is how well Buxton and Sano perform next season. With Cave we have a reasonable plan B for Buxton. We need to get the checkbook out to find a Plan B for Sano. One of the distressing things about Sano is he appears to be injury prone. It's too early to David Ortiz him, but we can no longer count on the 30-40 bombs and 90-100 RBI'S many of us predicted.
  4. I'd love to hear your argument. Note, circa 2009, BA did a long article by their standards on how a mid-market team rebuilds. It's pretty much what TR did. Tear down, play for draft choices, don't encumber yourself with long term commitments, etc. Also, BA said the minimum time required would be 6 years. TR had them in the hunt in less than 4. Another also, Theo and TR took over at the same time. They had identical records from 2012-2014. The Cubbie faithful were not real happy that Theo took a mid-market approach, which just happened to be was similar to TR's.
  5. 10 years? At the break in 2011 we were in the hunt. As we were in 2015, and in 2017 we were the first team in history to make the play-offs after losing 100 games. Most people believe we will contend in 2019 and in this case most people are right.
  6. But they are not rebuilding in any way, shape, or form. TR started the rebuild as soon as he got on board towards the end of 2011 and had us in the hunt by 2015.
  7. I've always liked Starlin Castro, and wouldn't mind getting Escobar back. That said we have much more pressing issues.
  8. He was the Astro's #7 prospect, and now ours at #11. He came to us with some kind of injury question and has pitched all of 15 innings. Rumor is he can touch 100 MPH. I don't see any need to panic.
  9. Grossman is a serviceable outfielder. Far better than board favorite Arcia when he was stumbling around Target Field. For the 3rd year in a row Grossman has done a solid job, and is no worse than the average 4th outfielder. One of these days he will get beat out in ST, as they will bring in a fair amount of competition every year, which is a it should be. You're not going to get a Trout-type as a 4th outfielder and Wade and Granite are AAAA only.
  10. Gibson was so-so in 7 starts in 2013. Same with May in 8 starts in 2014. I don't want to talk about Berrios' 14 starts in 2016. I was at 2 of his 5 home starts and it was like batting practice. 80-90% of all rookie starting pitchers go thru the same process. If they can pitch okay every other game or so, I'm fine with it. That said, I'm kind of enjoying watching the two of them. Let me make a prediction. We will package 2 of Stewart, Gonsalves, Mejia, Romero, Thorpe, or Odorizzi for a #2 starter. I think there is some showcasing going on.
  11. What positions have they said that? Certainly not the outfield. Sano at 3B, Polanco at SS and Mauer at IB is solid, and Castro and Garver are a solid duo at C. Anyway you can expand on your post with specifics? I believe if you actually put it in writing, you will see at the very most, we will have one placeholder and that is unlikely.
  12. I agree. I would be surprised if most or at least many of our moves, don't involve the pen.
  13. I loved it. Polanco is our best bunter and he set up Sano with practically a give me.
  14. It sure hasn't taken long for our trade returnees to make their presence felt, particularly starting pitching. Looks to me like our window has been extended. Kudos to the new regime.
  15. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. I had drinks with Jim Pohlad the other day after work. He told me they will use the 7.25M in free agency or donate it to Save the Whales.
  16. He's missed almost 3 complete years already. Burdi is not far behind. The new regime is not going to waste a lot of time with those who do not have a track record of being healthy. I question how much patience they will show with Bard, Jay, and the ever popular, board favorite Trevor May.
  17. Corner outfielders without any pop are a dime a dozen. Wade and Granite will have to be content being board favorites.
  18. Yeah, why give them credit for continued excellence. The 2017 draft appears strong, the 2017/18 off season was the most active ever and we picked up a bunch of board scapegoats. TD can never have enough scapegoats. The 2018 trade deadline will make us into a top 5 farm system. My personal favorite was the Hughes trade. The board was screaming to DFA Hughes and we saved 7.25M to use in free agency this off season by including a measly 2nd round pick.
  19. Kinley pitched all of 3 innings and may have had the best stuff in the pen except for Pressly. Last season's Rule 5 guy, Haley, is currently with the Red Sox. I recall one member said his 16 innings were the reason we crawled into the play-offs last season. It's foolish not to look at an outside arm for $100,000 a shot.
  20. Falvey said on Sunday, May asked him to go back to the pen. I'd be shocked if May ever starts for our favorite team again.
  21. To be an All-Star, Buxton only needs to hit .240. No need to panic.
  22. You can not determine if a team is rebuilding by how they handle one player. If they deal members of the core of 4 plus Polanco and Rosario, then they are rebuilding.
