Pierson Oh's behind-the-back catch got a grin even from the opposing team's first base coach. Priceless. Meanwhile, why isn't Dallas Keuchel at least a long man in the Twins bullpen? Let Gray go four strong innings, then let Keuchel go four strong, then closer.

I like Nick Gordon, and I really admire how he fought back from all his physical ailments to become a good mlb ballplayer. However, Hunter is right: Willie Castro is better in every respect except pure power. Castro adds a lot of little, but important elements that are lacking in Gordon's game. Castro is slightly faster, but noticeably quicker with his first step, both stealing and fielding. Castro's arm is definitely stronger, and at least as accurate as Gordon's. Castro is a much better bunter, and a better all-around baserunner. Last, I would rather see Castro in the game during a clutch situation, whether you need a perfect fielding play, a steal, or need to get one more hit. Willie Castro has displaced Nick Gordon as a super utility player. This is not to say Gordon has no value. It's just that Castro is even better.

Alex Kirilloff, the Oppo Taco Papa! Eddie Julien, the Poutine Power Bopper! Trevor Plouffe tried Bailey "Nightmare" Ober.... Hmmmm... Swing and a miss? I might try, "bet the Ober Under," as in, he keeps the opposition down.

Regardless how he does in baseball, I hope Jorge Lopez feels better about himself. An imperfect pitching performance does not indicate a flaw in your character.

Rumor: Tyler Mahle to undergo Tommy John Surgery
jimbo92107 replied to CoasterProductions's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
You can see why pitchers depend so heavily on physical preparation and perfecting their mechanics. They are operating right on the edge of injuring various parts of their body, particularly the elbow tendons and the shoulder joint. Even "little" things like a finger blister, strained finger tendon, impingement, groin pull, or various lower leg problems can sideline a pitcher for weeks, if not longer. weitz41 mentions Paddack regarding Mahle's case. Paddack is supposed to return sometime in August, I believe. Twins should hold off on contract talks with Mahle until they see what they have in Paddack. If he looks good, then Mahle becomes just one of several pitchers on the outside looking in for 2024. -
Dallas Kuechel is another veteran pitcher that gets outs with placement, spin and changing speeds. Like having a lefty Kenta Maeda. I don't mind that at all.

Twins Daily Pitcher of the Month - June 2023
jimbo92107 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is sneaky fun watching Baily Ober pitch, because hitters clearly are wondering why they aren't pounding the ball on him. On the other hand, Griffin Jax's innings are kind of boring, because nothing ever happens. Which is kinda like saying a bowler is boring because all he does is throw strikes.- 3 replies

Contrary to some opinions, Duran's stuff is not untouchable. However, in order to make contact with one of his offerings, a batter is forced to guess which one is coming. That's why Duran should keep throwing plenty of his fastballs. You have to be ready to get the bat around on a 100 + heater, while at the same time be ready to hold back your wrists if he snaps off a curve, or swing at the dirt if he throws his spork. The results can look pretty awkward, as hitters flail at his high heat, reach for a curve a foot beyond the end of their bat, or scuff the dirt trying to get down to his fork. The only thing more cruel would be if Duran developed a 70 mph sweeper, which would make RH hitters jump out of the box. Or if he developed a 90mph knuckle ball. What would that even look like?

Twins sign Scott Boras client Keuchel to a minor league deal
jimbo92107 replied to Brandon's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Dallas Keuchel does one thing really well - He keeps the ball down in the bottom third of the zone. He also never throws a ball exactly straight, always bending it at least a bit. Now, some guys will hit a three iron or a one wood off those pitches, but they'll have to guess how much it's going to bend, which ain't easy. That's why Keuchel has survived with such a mild heater. -
Joe Ryan: Hey Jeffers, stand over there, I wanna try out some pitches. 9 inning, 112 pitches, 9 ks and 3 hits later... Jeffers: Yeah, those looked pretty good. Pretty good day for Buxton, too. Guess I'll cancel that Amazon order for his rocking chair... :-)

This Team is Just the Timberwolves

Less than the sum of their parts? Could be, but all it takes is another spark... Hmmm... How much for a ticket to a Saints game?- 19 replies

Tragically, Byron Buxton's career is going to wind up as one of those huge, "what if" careers. What if Buxton had just a few fully healthy seasons? What if he had ten healthy seasons? What would his numbers look like? With his speed, power and arm, he would be a shoe in for Hall of Fame. As things are now, that match was lit, but the rocket barely sputtered on the pad. League average was below his estimated floor, yet now we'd just about kill for average hitting from the super-talented center fielder. The comp with Kepler fits sadly well. Pulled grounders and strikeouts. Needless to say, having another rally killer in the lineup won't help the team will many games. Having a weak hitter in the DH spot is even worse.

Bailey Ober continues to show that he belongs. Resilient after coughing up a couple homers, he stopped the damage, then put up a bunch more zeroes. So nice to have five starters that can each do this on a given day.

Austin Martin’s Not-So-Clear Path to the Twins
jimbo92107 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If avoiding surgery impedes his positional flexibility, then he should have opted for TJ earlier. His value as a pro will not go up as is. A fringy sub is not where Martin belongs. -
Twins Should Extend Tyler Mahle
jimbo92107 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Cody's idea of loading up Tyler Mahle's extension offer with incentives. When he comes back, it will absolutely be a "prove it" year for him, just as the second half of this year could be for Chris Paddack. I'd give Mahle $4 mil for a comfy recovery year, then offer him $15m first year back, with incentives that could pump it up to $20m. If he meets those, then the third year starts at $20m with incentives to get to $25m. If his first year back is disappointing, then repeat the first year back base and incentives. That would be my offer. -
Always fun to see the "out of nowhere" guys doing well, but Gianluca Dalatri is especially intriguing. Watching his little video clip, he's got some very pretty stuff. How did a guy like that get rejected by two major league clubs?

Hey Matt, that's some good writing, buddy! Looks like you followed writer's rule number one: If you had fun writing it, folks will have fun reading it. I was busy today, so I saw only bits of the game. Looked like a couple good pitchers out there. I wanna see more of Ober, so I'll wait for the compressed games to show up in the Video section. Meanwhile, is it really possible that this Twins squad needs to bring up its one gleaming blue chipper for this team to click offensively? Brooks Lee is kicking ass in AA right now, but let nobody suppose his transition to the Show will be particularly difficult. His DNA was carefully calculated to produce a baseball player. It's just science. They should bring up Wallner, too. Hometown Boy story will not be delayed much longer. Who doesn't want to see the fun when baserunners challenge that bazooka arm? It's not that I don't think Max Kepler has some pretty good ball left in him, but Kep's biggest year was the one with the juiced baseball. Wallner could match those totals with a regular ball. Kepler's defense is superb, but his offense has fallen off too much to keep him around. Maybe he can refresh his career with a new team. Twins need to aim higher than Max can take them.

Now we get to the part of the game where it all stops making sense. Both starters are gone, and now we watch both teams play Russian Roulette with a bunch of dubious pitchers that lacked something to prevent them from being an effective starter. Flawed pitchers vs. Flawed pitchers. Score could now wind up 7 to 5 or something, after a 6 innings of a pitcher's duel. Odd game.

I'm impressed with the Twins system. Finally it looks like Falvey and Levine have created a pipeline of good future mlb pitchers.
