I was driving the bandwagon on Boyd this summer, though I've soured a bit. I guess the question to me is whether or not our analytics guys see something that can bring that HR rate down a bit. If they can, I think he's worth the prospect cost... and he will be expensive, but well worth the price. I believe Detroit was looking for something like Lewis the last time. Boyd had a bad second half, but I doubt their asking price drops too much. -

To me, he was worth it. Arraez and Gordon weren't ready to be counted on going into 2019. He actually was pretty good for the first couple months. I'm not sure if it was injury or what, but he definitely fell off a cliff as time went on, which allowed Arraez the chance to take that job... So yeah, worth it... overpriced for what we got? Probably a bit. But the deal made sense for both sides. -
I doubt you see much for trades at the ML level. There's really not anyone who can easily back fill for someone else... Minor leaguers.. yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all .

Whenever I read an article on Eddie citing object evidence, they go straight to defensive metrics which are (to be honest) questionable in nature. I think Eddie is a year to year guy, in large part b/c of the talent waiting in the wings. I also don't see a scenario where he brings back pitching. But setting this aside, Eddie is a guy I could see having a monster 2020 if he stays healthy.

So I have to ask... every seems to love Chalmers. I understand the stuff is sexy, but right now he cannot control it at all and I don't see him sticking on an ML roster... I think the AFL told us that too... So what's the deal there? I think he's safe to leave unprotected... Also, you're going to leave Tyler Wells off the roster? I think he's more likely to have a really good ML career than Chalmers for what that's wroth. I get he's coming back from TJS... but that also means a team can 60 day him for as long as necessary and then snag him. I'm not sure I'd let that one get away.

If Castro wants to stay as Garver's backup on a 2 year deal with say an auto vesting 3rd option, I'd be fine with that personally.. That said, I'd probably prefer a bit more OBP from that spot. The team was relatively lacking in OBP, and I do fear if MLB fixes the balls that our offense is going to be hurt more than most.

To be fair, I don't think he'd cost that much, and will most certainly be a 1 year deal unless the market changes. He was decent, but do remember those numbers are nothing special for the NL and will certainly drop in the AL. It would be interesting to see if Wes Johnson can work some mojo with him to get the velo back up, but I wouldn't hold my breath in him being reinvented as his old self. Bottom line, I really hope this isn't the target. They have money to spend, so spend it on more of a sure thing.

yeah, I like the idea of spending big, but this is creative for the sake of creative and I think if they will spend money, it would be wiser to go get pitching instead of another bat.

He'll be up when he's ready or traded for impact pitching... I'm fine either way there, but no way I hand him a job in 2020 or even expect him to get it... Let him force his way on to the roster.

Those prospects aren't ready now and I highly doubt they outperform Eddie in 2020. I think Rosario is a year to year kind of guy personally. I don't think he's going to get that pitching back, but I do want him on the team in 2020... Let's not forget that Eddie was one of the few guys who hit well in the playoffs.

I'm tired of the narrative that says we cannot go out and get Cole personally... I want Cole or Strassburg (if he opts out).

This... so much this... Perhaps I'm in a minority here, but I'm of the opinion that Buxton and Bryant cannot even be compared. Bryant was a star the moment he was called up. His worst season since 2015 when he was called up was an .834 OPS with 13 HRs in a little over 100 games in 2018. To put that in perspective, Buxton's best season in the same timeframe was this year posting a .827 OPS in just under 90 games. Think about that... These two players do not compare at all. Buxton's play on the field is a big reason why his free agency has been delayed, which I'd add is precisely the reason service time rules exist... so that teams the develop a player can benefit from good play once the player plays well at MLB.

I have no problems opening the 5th spot up to a competition with Dobnak and Smeltzer being the front runners. I'd lean towards Dobnak in that role presently with Smeltzer starting in AAA and getting the call when someone goes down.

I think the beginning of the article stressing their inefficiency is also the answer as to why they don't do it. I do think they should run more.. The question though is who should be running. Buxton is a no brainer, but he's also spent a lot of time off the field.

well... 0 fWAR = replacement player... 1.2 is above that.. and yes I know that a replacement player isn't exactly 0. I also know said player is somewhat mythical. We had no one in our system this year that would have out produced Eddie.

How good is Encarnacion's 1B? If it's decent, he'd be an upgrade over Cron with the bat, and possibly at a cheaper price... I hope they aim higher for pitching. I don't want them to go sign a #3/4 type. Not with this offense.

In what world is Rosario a replacement player? He's not a star, but he has had a pretty good career thus far. I'd likely go year to year with him. I've defended him in other places, but there's a decent chance a replacement may be available at some point this or next year. I doubt Buxton, Berrios, or Sano sign one. Rodgers makes good sense. I could see extending Garver, but given his age, it's likely simply to lock in his arb values and give the team an option year or two. Tyler Duffey's emergence in the pen might make him a candidate as well.

The Odorizzi trade was a good one, but let's not forget that he wasn't the same Jake in his first season here. It took 2/3rds of that season for him to figure it out. This is my big problem with any "project" or buy low guy. You're going to have to give him innings. There's a lot of risk there that it doesn't pan out for several months, like Odorizzi, or once MLB hitters adjust, like Perez... Those games cost wins, and just because the windows is open doesn't mean that we should sleep on Cleveland or Chicago. They really need to spend some cash and get some difference makers.

interesting gamble... it's worth noting his results came in the NL.. I guess the question I have is how much a team with a window wide open is willing to take on reclamation projects. Those guys will give you some losses before they are fixed, and there's no guarantee they get fixed.

He's also been around long enough to know that may mean sitting out most of next season... I do think a long term deal makes sense, so hopefully it doesn't come to that.
