  1. I'm really hoping Santa puts some Cole in my stocking for Christmas, but that's probably a high hope. MadBum isn't a bad get, just not my first choice.
  2. Just a mod note, but no one is changing anyone's mind at this point in regards to whether or not Pineda was using PEDs or not realizing what he was taking in order to lose weight... This has been debated ad nauseum at this site since Pineda was suspended. So let's please drop that subject and get back on topic. Thanks.
  3. I'll be a bit surprised if Pineda signs anything other than a 1 year deal.... that's my 2 cents. That said, I'll also be a bit surprised if we acquire 3 pitchers as well. I think at best we sign 2 pitchers, and if we sign Pineda, he's the second pitcher... I'm not against getting him, it's a cheap 1 year deal that allows us to get a little exposure for Graterol, Dobnak, and Smeltzer. Graterol won't be starting all year long anyways, so that's a way to get him to his 100-120 IP limit and do so in MLB.
  4. Not sure I agree there. Rooker has some warts in his game right now. His K rate drops after he's had some exposure at a level, so I'm really hoping we see that out of the gate in 2020 for him in Rochester. I like him as a prospect, but I think if AK is ready, he will leapfrog Rooker, especially since both will require a 40 man add to join the roster this year.
  5. To be fair, payroll for last year was not low. They spent cash and were smart about it. I would hope that this new FO is willing to make the investments given they won 101 games last year... 3B isn't my first choice, but if they take one of these and move Sano to first (cutting Cron), that isn't the worst choice, and it's not that much more... so if they still get that pitching they need, it's a win.
  6. When healthy, one of the best I've ever watched... loved that he stuck around.
  7. If you consider how bad he was to start the year, it's quite possible he improves over last year... But yeah, with Sano he hasn't really strung good seasons together. I do hope he's preparing this offseason with that in mind.
  8. Agreed... I'd add our infield defense wasn't very good last year. Given his age, he can certainly improve there. I'm hoping that focusing on this is a big part of his offseason. His bat will play as long as the elite contact/plate discipline skills seem for real, and if those remain and the power develops... well look out.
  9. I know everyone talks about this, but I'd argue that this is something that should be put off as long as possible. It's not like his defense at 1st is going to suddenly be stellar, though I do agree at some point this change will happen... My guess/argument would be no sooner then when Cruz is retired/leaves (and if he has a good 2020, I'd argue that we should be re-signed)...
  10. It wont' make you unpopular. You're entitled to that opinion, and to some extent I think a lot of people share it... There's no question that this has transformed the game. I do think there's question about whether or not all of these transformations are good for the game... that's a separate issue and well worth it's own thread if that's something you want to discuss.
  11. I don't personally care how they improve pitching so long as it's improved. I'll simply say that I'd rather keep the prospects and spend the cash, but if they say get Jon Gray for a reasonable price and can fix him quickly, I'd be quite happy with that too. I think the problem though is that teams are in general wising up about these types of things. Gray will be a hot commodity on the trade front, and I suspect we won't get as lucky as we did with Odorizzi.
  12. Is 2.6 really in the top 10? Don't get me wrong, that's a good number, but when players can put up 5-6 WAR seasons, this seems off a bit...
  13. The time to do that was when Will Smith was a FA... Yes, I think another arm in the pen would be smart, but I want an elite shut down arm.
  14. I'm guessing he won't do a short term deal as suggested here. Pitchers rarely win in that scenario. It would probably need to be well in excess of 20M per season for him to think of a 2-3 year deal. I do think that the work Wes Johnson did might be something that would get some pitchers to consider coming here. They are after all very competitive by nature and the idea of potentially taking an already very good career a step up might get them thinking HOF... He's not my first choice, but I'm not against the signing either.
  15. Blankenhorn maybe, but Raley is practically ML ready. Someone steals him. Blankenhorn has a bit more upside and is still pretty close to being ready. I could see him going either way.
  16. Nick, do you really think Cole gets 35M/year? The last two offseasons has had some pretty significant depression in FA signings. You mentioned Darvish earlier... that was a good example. He got a lot less than everyone projected.
  17. They need two spots (I'm willing to give the 5th spot to one of the AAA guys).. I could see something like that for one of those spots (in my own plan I went out and got Pineda and used his suspension to platoon him with Graterol), but I think with the money they have to spent that it would be quite the disservice to the fans not to go out and get a Cole, Wheeler, Strassburg, Ryu, or Bumgardner… I've certainly made my case as to which one(s) I want out of that list, but if they ponied up and go the one they thought was best, I'd be fine with that. But I still really think they need to spend some money... Lord knows they have the cash this offseason and that window is open.
  18. Tigers stadium isn't a band box either if I remember right. I agree that the key on Boyd is fixing that HR rate... the question is why it's so high. Rick Anderson possibly?
  19. I do agree we should be finding the next Cole. And I do like that the FO seems to be much better suited to identifying and developing said talent. So here's my question for you Nick... How do you account for the time it takes to do that on a competitor? Odorizzi was pretty bad for most of his first season here. His last 2 months (if I remember right) were in line with this season, but the first 4 were... well... not good. We won 101 games last year. We need to not overlook Cleveland and Chicago, and I think we can safely assume the offense will regress a bit, so getting good pitching (particularly starters in our case) is a must. If you go out and try and find the next Cole, you're giving a spot to 2018 Odorizzi. Are you comfortable with that? Games will be given away in that scenario. Personally, I'd rather spend the cash and get the real Cole... would you not agree?
  20. Given the Boyd has 3 years of service time and Wheeler is a vet, I don't think these compare at all. You have to like what you've seen from Boyd over the last couple seasons. He's certainly progressing in the right direction... The question with a guy like Boyd is whether or not he's hit his ceiling or if there's still more there.
  21. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 10-20 HR in his prime as he gets stronger. But that said, given the power in the squad, he doesn't need power. We need guys that can get on base. Arraez can do that.
  22. This is probably a bit over the top, but I do think there's a good point to be made here about spending. Mike Sixel has asked this a number of times, but what exactly is the value of flexibility if we never use it? I'm all for making some smart, frugal signings, but I'll be pretty disappointed if a team that won 101 games last year with some obvious holes and 70ish M available doesn't spend some cash to plug them.
