  1. Cole and Strassburg were my targets.. I'd likely have backed out of Cole at that price, but I'd have had no problem with an 8th year for Strassburg… I'd have likely bid quite a bit higher on the remaining tier 2 guys as well... and if that still failed, a trade would have happened. I suppose that could still happen, but I'm not holding my breath after Baily/Hill. Like it or not, we were in a position where we needed to do a massive overpay. That's the nature of FA and we had the money to do it. Perhaps Donaldson helps that a bit, but we're still short some pitching even if we get him.
  2. So... the offseason isn't technically over yet, so I think it's fair to say that it isn't necessarily a failure... but... If this is it, then it absolutely was a failure and fans have a right to be frustrated. We went into the offseason with a ton of payroll space and the need to add 4 starting pitchers. We managed to retain 2, who admittedly were 2 of the better options out there, but replaced the other two with a 34 year old and a 40 year old pitcher. That's a lot of risk which more likely than not will put us back in the exact same position we were in last year.. I'm not going to get too concerned about payroll, but not going all in after a 101 win season and a core under contract is a bit perplexing. If we get Donaldson, perhaps, but that still leaves us exposed to some pretty big risk on the SP front. I could see the farm coming through and giving us one starter we can hang a hat on for 2021, but 3 (and that assumes no injuries)? I'm not liking it. We needed impact in the rotation. I'm not sure we've got that as it is presently constructed.
  3. I would add a 4th reason that dovetails off of your first... He got off to a horrific start and had to reinvent his swing at the ML level... Despite that, he was top 30. If he picks up where he left off and of course stays healthy, he could be top 5.
  4. woof... this was not what I had in mind when I wanted them to get pitching... Very disappointed and hope I'm wrong.
  5. Problem with the JV comparrison is that Price is more likely to not age well than rediscover what he lost. I don't know how good Boston's analytics team is, so perhaps ours sees something... but I'd be pretty leery about this move. I'd rather go younger at this point than an expensive and aging vet. Regardless, we have to get pitching since we missed out in FA.
  6. no reason to complain about this one... now go get Ryu.
  7. I really hope trusting the farm is not the choice here. I don't have a problem leaving one spot to the farm and of course filling Pineda's time off with the farm as well. That's plenty. But trusting the farm is a pretty dangerous thing to do, especially given how successful rookie pitchers are when they debut. That's a lot of games potentially thrown away... I'd further add that even though Graterol could be that ace we've always wanted, he's going to be on an innings limit since pitching a full season is something he's yet been able to do.. At best he's getting 120 innings this year. That means he will likely be in the pen or off the roster come playoff time. Perhaps Dobnak/Thorpe/Wells/Romero could show teh ability to hold down one of those spots, but the likelihood that 2 of them do it isn't good, adn the number of losses will pile up as we hand them 2 starts every 5 games, and that's before we talk injury. That's not good. This team needs another starter, whether that be via FA or trade. At some point, those risk valuations need to go out the door and they need to give someone like Ryu what he wants .
  8. I'm generally in favor of adding talent, but my 2 cents here is that they need to aim higher. I'm glad they did their due dillengence, but losing out on this one doesn't bother me too much... of course that means he'll be the next coming of Pedro Martinez....
  9. I don't think agents have nearly as much power in this as what is constantly mentioned at TD... agents job is to negotiate and present deals to the player. The player will pick what is best for the player. Just a pet peeve of mine. They may not take the Twins seriously, but if the Twins are calling, a good agent is talking.
  10. I don't think anyone disagrees with you on us needing to get better. I do think, however, that Dobnak could improve on his own. Admittedly, I doubt Berrios and Odorizzi can get much better (perhaps Jose doesn't have a second half swoon this year?), but I don't really think it's fair to lump Dobnak into this just yet.
  11. I have no problem leaving the 5th spot to Dobnak/Smeltzer/Thorpe with Randy getting the 1st shot... I think Graterol might be the Pineda filler. Flip side is we still need one more pitcher in that world.
  12. I think you spelled Cuddyer's last name wrong... But I don't think there's a resoure out there like that, and these are kind of neat.
  13. Twins are going to have to take some risk, like it or not... whether that be via cash or prospects. I have my preferences, but I really don't care as long as we have a better rotation in 2020 than we did in 2019.
  14. I've replied to this line of reasoning before and I feel the need to say it again. There's a rather big downside to this. It took about 4 months in 2018 for Jake to become the Odorizzi we got in 2019. That's a very risky proposition as it might not pan out... or worse, we're developing someone in the starting rotation and lose a few games in a tight race along the way.
  15. Odorizzi had his question marks, but the trade seemed pretty light at the time... Then again, Tampa is usually the one pulling the wool over other teams in a trade. Nice to be on the other side of one of those since most of our previous dealings with them haven't been positive.
  16. He's a command/control guy without exceptional stuff... that goes, he goes, and at his age that's more likely than not. I mentioned in another post that I'm not too excited about Ryu or Madbum either. I've soured more on MadBum especially due to Ted's recent piece. Ryu due to health. Right now, I'm probably on the Ryu bandwagon if Cole doesn't happen.
  17. yeah, I said something similar in another thread.Pineda was a completely different pitcher once summer hit last year. He was pitching better than Berrios. This could be an absolute steal at the price. I just hope the FO still manages to bring in at least one more pitcher that is well above average.
  18. I personally think they need to work a bit more OBP into the lineup, so I see this as a net positive for a bit lower price. Given they have other needs, I think this was a smart signing.
  19. Rookies also tend to improve over time and rarely do they hit the majors pitching like a #2, so I still think this is an overall net positive. I'd also add that all 3 of these guys were nobodies in terms of prospects, which I think is even more impressive. I do agree with the premise that the minor league staff, in terms of development, seems much improved. That was my biggest beef with the previous FO... they didn't seem to be able to develop talent. This FO has gotten more out of minor league pitching this season than the org has in quite some time.
  20. It's probably worth noting that Pineda was a tale of two pitchers last season, as he was not very good to start out the season. I'm guessing a lot of that was due to TJS recovery... But it's worth noting that he was pitching like a 1/2 after the all star break. This might be a fantastic signing.
  21. especially when you already have many millions. I wouldn't argue there either.
