  1. Yes... and that's a good thing... I'd add that by yes I imply that a prospect needs to force his way on to the roster, which is the way it should be on a winning team. Larnach and Lewis need time. They aren't even on the 40 man yet, so there's no reason to rush them given the situation on the MLB roster... but guys like Poppen, Dobnak, Arraez, and Smeltzer all got chances. Each one of them earned those chances. We lost a lot of service time rushing guys (Buxton in particular comes to mind). If this team wants to have sustainable success, we need to get beyond that.
  2. every team needs a player like Marwin on the roster... A guy who can play multiple positions well and essentially provide a league average bat is far more valuable than whatever WAR metric they accumulate.
  3. yeah, at this point at the very least they should be in the ALCS... another sweep would make me start thinking they've taken on the Vikings' curse... But to Chief point, success = WS or bust.
  4. The Twins should be swapping a young arm for an established arm. They should not be swapping young arms for position players. They need more arms, not less.
  5. I don't think I'd rank them at the top personally. Lineup might be the best in baseball. Last year we were really nervous about the pen, and while it looks like we may have found some good ones, the fickle nature of relievers tells me that this could come back. And we should be nervous about the rotation...
  6. Thank you!!!!! I think Rosario gets penalized by defensive metrics as he's on the field when Buxton and Kepler are there too… Someone gets hurt in that scenario, and unfairly so. If you want some proof of that, just look at how much better Rosario was in 2018 when Buxton was hurt/in the minors. Rosario is not a gold glover, but he has good range and speed and a cannon for an arm. That's more than you'll get out of Cave... and as soon as you plug Cave into that spot, suddenly his defensive metrics drop because defensive metrics aren't all that good. Is Cave potentially a replacement for Rosario? Possibly... especially if he continues to take steps forward in 2020. But as it is, he's an excellent 4th OF right now, and since our best OF spends lots of time on the IL, it's good to have a guy like Cave sitting around.
  7. I'll give a brief summary of what I said on the same topic in the baseball forum... Baseball has a competitive balance problem... and a big one. This doesn't fix that. And until players realize that the 350M contracts need to come to an end and that 3 teams cannot print money anymore, baseball's problems won't be going away.
  8. I'm not sure this qualifies as Maeda speaking publicly. His agent is doing so, that's for sure. That's also his agents job. He voiced his concerns to his agent (which he should) who passed it on to LA.
  9. So much this... we as a society have a forgiveness problem, and there's literally nothing anyone can do to earn that forgiveness once a line has been crossed. The truth is that none of us know if Marwin is contrite or not... and nothing will change it if he is or is not... accept it and move on.
  10. I've not ever seen much on how these projection systems stack up against reality... I'd love to see that data.
  11. I'm not sure I agree, but that wasn't the point of my post... if (as the OP suggested) this should be disallowed, my question is how do you do it? I really don't think there's a good answer to that.
  12. First off, this will not affect Graterols future earnings one bit. His salary is predetermined until he hits arb, at which point his arb value is determined by his results. When he hits FA, it will be based on what he's done. If he is still often injured, nothing in this ordeal will matter. If he's not often injured, he'll get a big deal. But to the point, should teams be allowed to do this? To an extent no, but how do you stop it? That's the rub. If the Twins had seen something in Dyson's medicals, should they have been allowed to go back on that deal? In hindsight, yes. So how do you protect an honest medical assessment vs. something that was most likely backtracking as in the case of Boston? I know that in the real world, this isn't possible either. Just look at buying a house. It's the same concept with an inspection that allows a buyer to get cold feet without recourse.
  13. This... I'm not sure I'd call Maeda a semi-impact type guy. He was stuck, but he's a known quantity and there's some upside that might be able to be found, so I have no problems targeting him. My bigger problem is missing out on guys who would have cost only cash... We'd still have Graterol in that scenario. I have no problems trading assets for need, but I'd rather spend the money on that need first and foremost... Only time will tell if this works out... It might be a very good trade at the end of the day... The downside fortunately is fairly low. The big downside is if Graterol suddenly finds health and can start. I know personally I was on record saying he had one more season to prove it before moving to the pen. It sounds like people in the know had already reached that conclusion.
  14. This is the crux of my argument as to why I'm not a fan of reclamation projects in general. You have to give them innings. If they work, great, but you're always trying stuff with them to see what you can get to work and eventually have to cut bait... Lots of losses happen in that scenario and they add up.
  15. I guess the point many are making is that this statement applies equally to Boston too. They'd have had to be naïve not to think that this was a real possibility. I tend to think the medicals were likely more of an excuse than anything.
  16. personally, I think this affects the fan's perception of the deal than any front office... you just have to learn to take those barbs... any public athlete will have to do that from time to time... Not saying it's right, but I don't think this is nearly as damaging as people say.
  17. It happened in the NFL not that long ago with Pat Tillman. He died too.
  18. Haven't seen what we're getting back, but it's essentially the same trade with cash and a prospect minus a comp pick (valued at about 6M less than the cash received) and Raley... My guess is we'll get a prospect back similar to what we drafted... probably a medium to high ceiling guy with a lot of question marks in rookie ball or low A..
  19. the question for me is whether or not his changes can stick... he always strikes out like crazy at a new level and then adjusts... if he starts out 2020 looking like the last month of 2019 and continued adjustment, I'd say there's hope that he could be very good... That said, I'm not looking forward to his MLB debut... I think he's going to take some lumps.
  20. Great article... makes me excited to think he could be good here... I'd quibble a bit and note that I wouldn't call him an ace just yet... potential is there though.
  21. wow... I have to admit I didn't see this one coming. Losing Brusdar hurts, but after reading through this thread, I think this was a good move overall... Couple thoughts: This front office continues to show little patience with oft injured pitchers. Trading Graterol at a higher value makes a lot of sense there. On that, I suspect they don't think he can start either... Even a relief ace (Graterol's potential) for a potential above average starter with 4 years of control is pretty cheap I think in comparison.I wanted them to do something about pitching. They did. I'm a lot more comfortable with this rotation as it stands now, with reinforcements in Pineda and possibly Hill, this starting 5 (or 7?) is built to make it through the season, and there's lots of upside in the post season.I guess the real question is whether or not Johnson can work his magic with Maeda. The K numbers are already pretty good, so hopefully the analytics guys can coax a bit more out of it as the raw stuff is there, along with a known MLB quantity. I like it.
  22. Cave has shown he can hit at this level at a well above average clip for a CF... Yeah, his defense isn't spectacular, but it's worth noting that his offense cancells that out... We have several CFs on this roster in Cave, Kepler, Wade, and even Rosario in a pinch. I think to an extent we're spoiled by Buxton whose defense is off the charts.... not a bad problem to have, but Buxton going down won't cripple this team. That said, I hope he hits like he did last year and plays 150 games...
  23. If the ball was never juiced at all and you throw out the last couple season of HR binges, 267 would be one of the best HR hitting teams of all time... I think that's probably a bit too rosie if MLB actually fixes the ball... So my prediction is under if they fix the ball, and over if they don't.
