  1. yeah, I hope for the purpose of building up innings that Graterol is in the mix this spring. All 4 will likely need to pitch at some point, so I'm not going to get too worked up... I think Thorpe and Dobnak have a lot of promise and I hope that they are getting innings because they run with the opportunities given to them. I wouldn't count out Romero either... I like that we have options... I don't like the amount of innings that will likely be given to said options b/c we didnt' do enough to fix the rotation.
  2. I don't think it's as simple as comparing stats and going... "hey, that guy was very similar to Cole before he left, therefore you're going to get the same results"... there's a lot more to it I think... Should the Twins approach Pittsburg for a trade? Maybe I guess. Musgrave is certianly interesting. I'm not sure I'd touch Archer given that Tampa couldn't get much in terms of results out of him either... But... if they think they can unlock potential, go for it.
  3. I'll simply say what I said when TR was fired... I don't think their problem was identifying talent. I do think they had a problem developing it, and I'm not sure this core would be THIS CORE had TR remained at the helm. Hopefully, Falvine did a good job keeping what worked in the TR admin while changing what didn't
  4. It may be 16 starts before Pineda rejoins the rotation, but it's a lot more than 16 games that we will be counting on these guys. Hill is set for June at the earliest. He's 40, often injured, and just went under an experimental (yet promising) surgery. Given it's associated with his ulnar, I wouldn't even assume he's back to his old self come June... So yeah, I think it's going to be a lot more than 16 games that we're counting on reinforcements... Hopefully we see Dobnak and Thorpe take big steps forward and make us forget about this, but I can see a lot of complaints about a lack of planning for the rotation, and rightfully so.
  5. I actually thought Lucas was Heezey until Heezey posted... I have to say, articles like this are what makes TD great... It's really nice to see some experts in this field with the ability to dumb this down for the rest of us.
  6. no thanks on a major league deal, but as a minor league deal with an invite, sure... I'd give him an opt out too if he wanted, but not a guaranteed spot on the 40 man.
  7. Donaldson should help, but lineup is still a bit OBP poor for my tastes.. I'd probably go Wade personally, but I could see Cave or Gordon too.
  8. I think we forget just how good he was the first two months of the season.
  9. Looks like both teams added a roughly equal amount of talent. I still think the Sox are a little behind us, but I wouldn't sleep on them....
  10. Is ick or ish an appropriate response here?
  11. I think starting him at the outset and then easing him into the pen makes the most sense to get him those innings while keeping him here... Just my two cents. I know that pen time can be valuable too... STL, if I remember right, often uses the pen as a developmental component to their starters, and given that Graterol isn't going to go more than 100-120 innings, it really does make sense to kill a few birds with one stone... They have two starters that won't be ready in April/May... use that to get his innings up, switch him to the pen, and plan on him as a starter in 2021 if the changeup progresses enough.
  12. Rosie is definitely a year to year guy. A lot will depend on how Kirilloff and Larnach progress in the minors. I woudln't be surprised if Eddie stays for another year, but I don't see him getting a long term deal here.
  13. 10 innings outside of the clunker falls under SSS for sure. I'm not saying the results were bad, but we have to recognize that right now it's more results inconclusive rather then pinning hopes that he can rival Rodgers for the best reliever... Now that said, he needs to get 100-120 innings this season. He won't do that in the pen... so I guess the question I have is why he cannot get some starts in April/May given that both Pineda and Hill won't be available? It helps log the innings. It keeps him the majors, and he can switch back to the pen when one comes back.
  14. yes to your point... I also think most of us assume they won't pay the price to get one.
  15. wow... twitter blowing up with closeup shots of said buzzers... kind of funny actually.
  16. This... Nothing quite like hoping that your 40 year old pitcher that cannot stay healthy will somehow be ready when he comes off of elbow surgery or hoping that they other guy you signed figured something out more than just having a hot second half of 2019. They need a top of the rotation pitcher or two to complement the lineup. Instead we're counting on rookies for 2 of the 5 spots and hoping there are no setbacks with Hill or Pineda. I don't like this plan... Donaldson or not. Odds are real good we're going to be hurting for pitching and that we won't have the good enough pitching should we make the playoffs again.
  17. He certainly had his ups and downs, but I think you need to review your definition of average. Jake was well above average last season striking out 10 per 9 innings and an ERA of 3.51... League average is over 4. He missed bats and kept runs from crossing the plate... You can certainly argue whether it continues. I won't necessarily disagree, but Jake pitched quite well for us last season.
  18. This... I'm disappointed they didn't get a FA pitcher, but that just improved the lineup and the defense pretty significantly... Trade for a starter.
  19. Correct... in Beltran's case though, he organized it. That's pretty clear. I have no problems hitting the players who were heavily involved... but that's the sticky point, which was what I was getting at... I'm not quite sure how you do it.
  20. Should they trade for Bryant? Not my first choice, but I'm not against it either. I'd rather go get Donaldson since his cost is cash, he's a better defender, and he can shift to DH as soon as 2021 if his defense falls off a cliff or as means of keeping the wear and tear off of his body. Why the Twins haven't simply upped their offer and gotten him in house at this point is maddening. If I'm trading prospects, I'd much rather acquire pitching, which is a bigger need. The offense is fine as is and there are plenty of FA 1B that can equal or replace what Cron did for us... including I might add, Cron who I think would be a good bounce back buy. But back to a trade, I would have no problems agreeing to a prospect plus a PTBNL that changes based on the outcome of the grievance. If the Cubs did something like that, then that's how I trade for Bryant. But it is not my first choice when you can Donaldson... and I'd much rather the prospects be spent on starting pitching.
  21. You're not wrong about this... whether it helped or not, they did it. I'm not quite sure what the right answer is... The reason MLB didn't punish players is that level of culpability was not able to be determined... If Marwin, for example, verbally voiced his concern to coaches... how do you punish him? If he did it in writing, that's something else if by chance someone still has the email (and data retention polices are often in place to prevent those exact type of issues). That's why it gets so sticky... I don't have a problem though, after reading your posts, agreeing that this was probably a bit too light. Not sure I'd call it a lifetime ban like Rose since to be fair that penalty wasn't in place in advance like it was for Rose, but I can definitely see where it should be harsher. Beltran in particular should get punished, and he's going to get off scott free.
  22. If the article tells me anything, it's that we shouldn't count on Sano improving defensively if he switches to 1st... I'm with the others on this. Our IF defense was already pretty bad, adding Castellanos would be a mistake. I'd rather get Donaldson, who at the very least is a plus defender at 3rd presently. Hopefully Polanco can regress closer to career averages and Arraez can improve with age.
  23. Timing... and probably to some extent enough scouting knowledge to know the direction of movement and adjust accordingly.
  24. I have to think that the reason they haven't come to a 1 year agreement is that they are working on a long term deal. 375k is nothing when you're talking about a 1 year salary in the 4M range. It's certainly not worth any of the fallout risks from the FO's standpoint.... it's not like they are 1.5 apart or something like that... Bottom line, I'll be a bit surprised if this one makes it to arbitration. If they cannot get a long term deal, I suspect it gets settled before the hearing.
  25. I think he's first in line to start in the Pineda spot, at which point I transition him to long relief/spot start in hopes of getting him about 120 innings this year so he can be a full time starter next year... if he gets hurt again, he goes to the pen permanently.
