  1. Might depend on what your "unpopular" or "controversial" opinion is. Some opinions absolutely deserve to be disregarded. But right now your entire argument is based on strawmen baseball players not wanting to go along with their teammates and we've had no reports that any Twins player felt that way.
  2. This is really well said, Stu. I'm extremely proud of our professional athletes - MLB, NBA, even NASCAR - who are addressing issues that need to be addressed. Good for them.
  3. The players have managed to work hard enough that the comparison to your job is completely irrelevant. You are a replaceable cog. They are not. They have power. They used it. I've been very impressed by professional athletes these last few years - they've been, often enough, better leaders than our politicians. I'm very proud of the Twins today.
  4. Apple's 4-1 stock split reorganizes the Dow. Exxon is kicked out - it had been in the dow for 92 years. Back in January I bought Exxon for my IRA because it just hit a 10 year low in case anyone wants to follow my stock picking advice. https://www.investopedia.com/shakeup-dow-industrials-exxon-out-5075621?utm_campaign=quote-yahoo&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=referral&yptr=yahoo
  5. Dumb question but are the minor leagues playing this year? On Whitefield (and I know i mentioned this before) but I have a friend who is an international scout for the Royals based in the pacific. He covers SE Asia and Australia and urged the Royals to sign Whitefield. When the Twins nabbed him he sent me a note saying the Twins robbed him. He used colorful language.
  6. Man, if I knew ... I think there will be a pretty big correction and the market will come down significantly but I could be completely wrong. But it seems like we are doing about as much wrong on covid-19 as we can, that investors will get spooked during election season, that federal efforts to keep the stock market high are temporary measures that don't address the underlying problems. We've been hoarding cash since March and aren't planning on making any large buys until after November. But keep in mind, I panicked and sold shopify so I know nothing.
  7. Way off topic but maybe someone here can throw in their two cents. I have a pretty old desktop computer (and a number of tablets which is a different issue). My kids are getting to the point that they want to play some paradox games from steam (EU IV) and some online games on the desktop as opposed to the tablets and they are saying my computer is too old/too slow, sort of like their dad. I have windows 10 and my processor is a AMD FX-6120 Six-Core, my graphics card is amd radeon hd 7450 and i have 10 GB of installed RAM. A quick internet suggests that this is enough for the online requirements for something like world of warcraft and other RPG games. I assume they are enough for the steam games but I haven't checked. Kids say minimum requirements aren't enough. So, two part question - it does seem like my processor and graphics card are a bit dated. If so, is it cheaper to try and buy updated processors and graphics cards and have them installed into my current desktop (of which i have no idea how to do) or is it better to just shop for a new "gaming desktop." And what kind of processor and graphics card should I be looking for?
  8. This is pretty well said. It's 2020. We should want people to feel comfortable at the park and feel included in our society. Getting rid of a stupid statute is an easy thing to do.
  9. The fact that he was segregating his players into the 60s suggests he was racist. His comments in 1978 that were widely reported suggest that he was racist by the standards of the 1970s. I'm honestly surprised that so many people care about a 10 year old statute.
  10. Just now seeing this thread. I think Nick should be thanked for his well thought out post.
  11. Hunter is really interesting. In 12 of his 17 seasons he was good for 3+ WAR* each year. That's actually kind of rare both in actually number of seasons but also in % of seasons played. Tim Raines - who earned 20 more WAR in 19 seasons - only had 11 seasons of 3+ WAR (58%). (I am not saying Hunter was better than Raines). Hunter was a solid starter for a very long time but he never had those dominate seasons - Raines had 6 seasons better than Hunter's best. I think Hunter is a solid Hall of Very Good type. I also think Hunter's personality and obvious leadership will help him a bit in the voting. He was the big personality on all of his teams. I also liked that he talked about race in ways that made white audiences uncomfortable. One of my favorite Twins of all time. * It's also worth noting for Twins fans that WAR really changed how people viewed Hunter. IIRC, when he was leaving the Twins to the Angels, Aaron Gleeman said that the Angels paid too much, that Hunter wasn't that valuable and, as evidence, pointed out that Hunter had yet to have a 3 WAR season. But b-r changed their WAR calculation and Hunter was one of the biggest beneficiaries, gaining 11 WAR in their new formula.
  12. I'm glad you did well!
  13. Yeah, I keep seeing things I missed but I have no idea what to do right now. All this unemployment, significant chance of a second wave, election year craziness. And the market is rocking? I've talked to some investment guys and they don't know. One guy thinks everything is ok but most everyone else says it's crazy. I dunno. I've definitely missed out on some buying opportunities but my wife and I will just continue to hoard cash for a bit.
  14. My father in law actually has told me a (supposedly) true story of a friend of his that was trading in cattle futures. He made a bunch of trades and a lot of money but you are supposed not be left holding the trade when it comes due. He was on vacation and forgot about it and got a call asking where he wants all this cattle to go to.
  15. Jesus, I should not have sold my stake in Shopify
  16. I thought this article was about right - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-15/all-the-views-of-how-the-stock-market-lost-its-grip-on-reality I think there will be better places to buy in the next few months but I've been pretty good at not timing the market so what do I know?
  17. Any of Carew, Mauer and Killer would be a valid #1. Great seasons by all and all three are legit HOFers. I'd probably give the edge to Mauer because I saw him that season and it was an amazing feeling seeing it all come together.
  18. I think you are right (although with my betting performance in the last year, that's probably the kiss of death). An adviser at Wells Fargo told that they expect some falls, some more buying opportunities, followed by more downs. They seemed pessimistic but they are also based in Florida.
  19. Man, I hope some of you are making money off this market. For the life of me, I can't figure this one out. I was sure the jobless numbers would kill the market but it's still rallying.
  20. I'm not sure Mauer is the most intelligent guy you could have picked. If you were going with 'eye' or something, I could get on board. It might depend on how you view him but the two views on Mauer seem to be that 1) he was the greatest Twin ever, don't criticize him or 2) he was a bum who wouldn't change his swing to tap into his power or even after opposing teams figured him out.
  21. I sold my stake in Shopify. Turned 5k into 42k. Appreciate the tip. I'm not allowed to make trades in my IRA account, very frustrating. But I'm not really a day trader so I haven't worried about it much. At this point, just hoarding cash.
  22. Looks like Mike's zoom purchases have worked out pretty well for him. Up 20 some percent since his purchase, I believe. Looks like today might the first day in six weeks with back to back positive numbers for the Dow and S&P.
  23. It's my fault. I bought a bit of Exxon when it hit its ten year low. I apologize to everyone. My opinion is that until the virus gets under control, the market won't be safe to invest in. Some stocks will ride this out better than others. I'll probably eventually make a fairly large buy in an index fund but not for a while.
  24. Rough day. I was in court all morning so came out to see the disaster. Out of curiosity, what platform are you using to do your trades?
