  1. He doesn't really remind me of anyone we've had but the way hitters have flailed at stuff out of the zone, it's sorta like Liriano, back in his day. What was really nice to watch was how he doesn't (for now) need to throw actual strikes b/c hitters are confused and swinging at balls. With scouting reports we might need to see adjustments but, for now, this is a lot of fun to watch.
  2. Oh yeah, me too. I'd love it if he managed to make me eat crow and become a ML pitcher for us. I'm rooting for him.
  3. Obviously, Gonsalves is the story. He certainly seems to have taken the AA assignment as a challenge. Nice to see him pitching so well against AAA competition. I'd imagine he'll be the next one up.
  4. This came up when the Twins drafted him. The assumption was that he could serve his two years of service in the reserves and still pitch full time for the Twins. It was a risk since those rules could be - and were - changed. So the Twins thought they'd have Jax around a lot more when the drafted him. If he could have played with the Twins, he was a solid 3rd round pick. But because he's missed so much time, it's really hurt him. http://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/professional/cedar-rapids-kernels/griffin-jax-heads-to-air-force-after-fine-pitching-performance-in-cr-kernels-12-4-win-over-lansing-20170722 Sure, there are no sure things in the drafts but it's always better to bet on players who are actually playing baseball, like Lewis. Right now, Jax hasn't played much. When he has, he hasn't actually been all that dominant (I made the comparison to Stewart for a reason - Stewart is getting raked over the coals for his low K-totals in AA, Jax has worse K totals in low A). He's old for a prospect. Sure, there are old players who figured it out but it's not a thing you want to rely on. Lastly, this is a minor league baseball forum. We're talking about players in our system. Occasionally, we get feel-good stories here, especially from Seth. But generally this is about talking about these guys as prospects. There are a lot of really good guys in the minors who won't make it and only occasionally is that mentioned. I don't think you should expect people to not say what they think about Jax the prospect just b/c you might be overly sensitive to it. Saying a guy with his profile isn't really a prospect anymore isn't that controversial.
  5. That's unlikely to be a problem we will have to concern ourselves with. The reality is, Jax is 23 years old (he's one month younger than Kohl Stewart) and hasn't thrown 40 innings since the Twins drafted him. He's made four starts in low A ball. He's really not a prospect anymore but more a feel-good story.
  6. Baddoo seems to be drawing a lot of walks even if he isn't hitting as well as I thought he would.
  7. I agree, it's too early to give up on this team and they have plenty of talent. But, as I mentioned in another thread, I do think some of these problems are on Molitor and the coaching staff. We have the talent but the ML coaches have to get the talent out of these guys. I'm flabbergasted that Lynn is this bad. I have no idea why. I know NL pitchers have trouble adjusting to the AL but this is ridiculous. Hopefully it's lack of ST and he gets going soon but, wow, he's been bad.
  8. Uff-da. really was hoping that we had already hit rock bottom.
  9. I wonder if the fact that he's DHing more is getting in his head. Like a bad at-bat sticks with him longer b/c he can't forget about like he could if he's on the field? Hopefully the Reds pitching staff can get him back on track.
  10. To be positive a moment, Gibson has been decent for our #4 starter. Good to see. I wish Molitor would've let him pitch a bit longer but I'm just looking at the box score. Maybe he done. Who knows.
  11. Well, even with regression, I don't think anyone thought he was done. Something sorta between the last two years.
  12. I dunno. His bat path may be the same or it may not. But it also might be slower as he ages. All those pop ups and fouls back on fastballs suggest that Smalley is onto something.
  13. Long run, we'll be fine. I figured us for 90ish wins but I still figured we'd have some 3-7 stretches along the way. That said, my concerns about Molitor have not abated. I don't think he's the right manager for this team. I haven't watched much of these Yankee Twins games but the little I saw was with Bremer and Smalley (who I like in the booth) complaining about Berrios getting squeezed and our hitters having to cover a large zone. When an ump is messing up like that the manager has to get that fixed. Gardy would've gone apocalyptic on the ump and got tossed. Molly just seems to sit there. I don't like his lineups and his bullpen use has been questionable. I felt like the Twins won 85 games last year despite the manager and FO. Not sure that's changed. But the season is young and we have lots of baseball left.
  14. I believe we are now 33-93 against the Yankees since 2002. I'm not 100% sure that counts all our post season losses. I'm not going to check.
  15. Nice to see Baddoo and Kiriloff get more hits. But for the most part, the minors have started a bit flat.
  16. Yeah, he's just been pounding the strike zone. I love the lack of walks. He also seems like he could be a 200 inning pitcher, which is getting rare in this day and age. As an aside, it's just fun to watch him (and the other young guys) after years of waiting for them in the minors.
  17. I think Morrison will be ok eventually but maybe not. There are flags. But I think it's probably too early to give up on him but I think he should be moved down in the order. It doesn't help that we don't really have an obvious replacement for him, either. I've never been a big Vargas fan and he's putting up bad numbers again at AAA. Grossman isn't hitting either.
  18. I missed the game. Why was Berrios pulled with only 84 pitches?
  19. I didn't want to lose but Lindor is really something. Probably my favorite non-Twin at this point. Also, my early season prediction that Cleveland would be bad this year is probably not going to be true. Let's hope Berrios is dominant tonight.
  20. I think he gets in fairly easily - maybe not first ballot but he won't wait long.
  21. A couple encouraging starts for Stewart. Nice to see. Rooker and Baddoo are struggling a bit more than I thought they would although the season is still pretty young.
  22. Gad, another DL trip for Jay? I mean, he's got the stuff from the scouting reports but, jeez, the guy can't stay on the field.
