  1. I think a Castro/Garver platoon - if Molly actually does it - is a good idea. My concern is that he'll give Garver a lot of at-bats against RHP and sit him for LHP.
  2. I'm not sure Gonsalves is quite a fair comp here. Gonsalves started the year with shoulder soreness and didn't pitch until the end of May. Gonsalves and Romero are also different stuff-wise. Romero is the better pitcher who might move more rapidly (like Berrios). I'm not convinced that Gonsalves will make the majors ahead of Romero despite being at AAA.
  3. I don't really have a problem with it. Many teams, including the Twins, have had arms jump from AA to the majors. AAA isn't that important for pitchers. Right now it's just a numbers crunch but Romero will (probably) make the majors this year anyway.
  4. I like this. AA will be really interesting to watch. I hope Stewart can fix his career. Thorpe and Romero have some pretty high ceilings. I don't think either are really blocked by AAA guys - they can move Jorge to AA if needed, for example. I imagine that May will go to the AAA rotation when he's healthy.
  5. I think the Morrison signing was the FO's way to hedge on Mauer. He might be back but if I had to bet on it today, I think Morrison is our starting first baseman next year and Mauer is out.
  6. Of course not. Vargas isn't a third baseman. Sano, on the other hand, is. And he's played there, fairly well defensively, so far in his career.
  7. Here's the video of Sano yesterday. https://www.mlb.com/video/sanos-rbi-single/c-1885330183?tid=69972428 He's a bid guy but I'm not sure he's hugely over weight. He doesn't look like the Panda from a few years ago, at least.
  8. Jeez, he's our most dangerous offensive weapon. He could lead the league in homers. He was a legit all-star last year who played on a broken leg for a bit before going down. He held his own at third last year. The FO signed Morrison so they don't seem to worried about him not playing third. Despite the rumors of his weight, he's looked good so far in ST, he's crushing the ball (OPS over 1.100). Maybe we should wait with the pitchforks until he's actually failing? He'll be fine. He'll be an all-star again this year and finish top five in home runs. He's a freaking stud.
  9. I actually think Cleveland is due a rough season. They've had two straight killer post-seasons. They lost their emotional leader. Their rotation was pretty healthy last year (only used 7 starters).
  10. Holy crap. 1/12? Owners are sure winning this collusion war.
  11. Keep in mind, next season will include Harper, Machado, Kershaw, Blackmon, Donaldson, Andrew Miller, David Price has an opt out, Gio Gonzalez ... It's an insane class and one of the reasons owners are trying to keep prices low this offseason. There's a pretty good argument that Dozier won't be a top 10 free agent next year. So he could take the Twins one year offer and wait another year.
  12. I think with the collusion by owners this offseason that Dozier is more likely to accept a qualifying offer next offseason than go through free agency.
  13. I'm not too worried about Sano's bat. It looks like the FO is willing to let him play third base for the majority of the season so they signed Morrison.
  14. Yep, the Giant's also had some solid pitchers but never one worth more than 4.5 WAR in their WS seasons. If Ervin wasn't an ace last year (top 10 in ERA+, IP, WHIP, WAR, era) than those guys weren't aces either. Jon Lester has had some up and down years where he sometimes pitches like an ace and sometimes not. His 2013 season was a down year as well.
  15. Depends on what an ace is but they have a strong offense. They can win without one.
  16. A team can win the World Series without a true ace. Many have.
  17. With the option it might also mean the Twins are getting ready to move on from Mauer after this year. With a good year, top prospect Rooker could be in the plans for 2019 and you still have options for Morrison and Sano under contract. Unless Mauer has a huge season, this could be it.
  18. Our current OF options are Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Grossman, Granite and Morrison. All but Buxton are lefties. Our current DH/1B options are Mauer, Morrison and Vargas. Vargas is a switch hitter but iffy and the others are lefties. I would guess that our final opening day roster will add another RH bat with Granite starting the year in AAA.
  19. Wow, pretty nice. Huge bat, he hit lefties ok but crushed righties. Hard to argue with this signing. And I think this pushes the Twins payroll to nearly 120m which is a lot more than I'd have guessed the FO could spend so good for them.
  20. The change in drafting philosophy happened in 08 when Deron Johnson took over. He drafted flame throwers instead of control pitchers. Radcliff had more imput on the 12 class.
  21. Agreed. Obviously, this is a bit semantics but if by "elite" we sorta mean the high levels of Buxton, Sano, Mauer and if by "really good" maybe a tier below where we saw Kepler and maybe Berrios (Berrios might have moved between the two, depending on who did the ranking) who might be able to make that jump this year? Lewis, Javier and maybe Thorpe with a dominating year? I think guys like Kiriloff, Baddoo, Graterol and Enlow would need more than one big season to jump that high up the rankings and guys like Rooker and Romero might peak at the Kepler tier. And that's assuming everything goes right, which it won't.
  22. Leach was a helium guy on draft day but he's still raw and very far away. The concern was that because he was demanding as much an Enlow, he'd be taken if they passed on him. The Twins have taken several HS arms that are risky but have nice upside from non-traditional places like Canada (Leach and Balazovic) or are recovering from injuries (Benninghoff). They won't all work out but they are reasonable risks.
  23. They can have a league average or worse starting rotation and still be an above average team.
