  1. The Philly trade discussed you need to consider what the team has already. Specifically, the article suggests Aidan Miller was floated for the Twins, they rejected for Tait and Abel. Well, at the time Miller was doing terrible in AA, because with his August numbers his overall was .259/.382/.427, which for a full year of a decent defending SS is good, but when he has the August mentioned his numbers were much worse. Scouting reports are he will come off SS and play 3rd or 2nd, making his bat more needed. Then you see we have Culpepper, similar age, performing overall better at AA and despite initial thoughts of him moving off SS rumors are he is doing fine there. So bringing in Miller may have added a possible bat, but he would have slotted into the same spots as Lewis, Lee, Keashall, Culpepper, and we just drafted a SS in Houston. On the flip side, Tait is a top prospect, years away, but is a possible catcher, of which we have no top prospects, and a pitcher, that you can never have too many to fill in. Miller may have value but in the Twins system he would have less value because of so many other possible guys that can cover the same areas he would do.
  2. This is just a we need to write something article. Most rankings had him top 5, when you are up there the difference is minimal, also it does not mean anything as to which player will be the true better MLB player. In terms of the drop in fangraphs, they may rank power as a more important tool, as some do, than other tools and will take people with more proven power. The kid looks the part and I fully expect he will be at MLB level early next year. I am hoping we can agree to a 7 year deal so they will not delay in calling him up, but if they do not, I expect he will be a late April call up, to get that extra year of arb to get 7 years of control.
  3. I hope we can get Jenkins to sign a 7 year deal so we can avoid the having him sit for like 2 weeks in AAA while he "gets more experience" next year.
  4. If Clemens is part of our plans going forward to be a regular anything, we can just give up on the next season too. He had that quick flash when he came over and helped us win some games, but since he has been who he is. His May and July were good, but outside of those months he has been below replacement. If they have plans to keep him next year and use him I have no faith in our team next year.
  5. None of these guys should be really listed as a top prospect at this point. Rosario was, but he has got passed by and really has little room in the Twins pecking order. Sure, if they make some moves or injuries he could get his chance, but I have a feeling he will be left up to rule 5. Fedko is older breaking out, and not saying he could not contribute to a team at his age, but I am not getting too excited on a guy that breaks out in AAA at age 26. Pareda is 29, no a prospect. Jimenez could climb lists, but he is 19 and not touted, but he at least has chance to become a top prospect.
  6. I am no doctor, but I have taken some classes years ago in college on athletic performance. One thing that people actually do not pay much attention to, unless you work in the field, is how lower body will actually help the upper body. I do agree, though the increase in the velo of pitcher does lead to much more injuries. The injuries are up not due to pitch clocks, like the union wants to argue, but due to put so much more stress on arms than normal. The pitchers need to decide is performance better than long term health? Yes, there are guys that are not normal humans like Nolan Ryan, he was a super human which is why he could pitch with the velo he did and the number of throws he did. He should be the model. I still believe if you can locate well, have good movement, you do not need 95 plus on your fastball to win. But teams will not want to even look at a guy that tops out at 90 anymore.
  7. I personally think fans just got over the season after the trade deadline, and the team has just tanked. They are not playing fun baseball to watch. To me, it is not just about wins and losses, but is the team entertaining to watch. Do they just strike out a ton, leave a ton of guys on base, never steal, have poor defense? If that is the team you put out, why are you going to watch? One other thing that hurts is the push of the WNBA and having the team in that league, some fans will not take their time and money to watch them over the Twins.
  8. This article, and the comments really just highlight how hard it is to quantify bad defense. For years, fans looked at errors as a metric, but we know that is not a good way to measure defense anymore. Fans also used the eye test of great "looking" plays but the eye test on great looking plays could fail, as with some OF they take a bad route and make a diving catching did they make a great play? NO, but they made it look pretty. A good defender may have made the play outright. Gold gloves was a terrible way too as top offense guys managed to win gold gloves, like Raffy Palmero winning a gold glove at 1st when he DHed most of the year. The voters, that being managers never cared and would vote for names they knew. Pitchers would win it over and over because they were known. One commentor mentioned Jeter, who I agree was one of the most overrated defenders at SS in his time. He was a decent defender early in career, and then he rode that out for long time and would keep winning gold golves because his offense. He even won a "catch" of the year when he caught a foul ball, then instead of sliding to stop, he decided he would jump into the stands, after he caught the ball. He makes that catch anywhere else on field he gets a good running catch. However, the lore of Jeter was he dove into the stands to make the catch, like he did a head first dive and caught the ball in the air. Maybe the way he ran for it he really could not have stopped before hitting the wall, but the lore was he dove into stands to make the catch, it would have been a fair ball if he does not catch it. The point is, we will never have a perfect way to judge defenders. And if you can hit teams will put up with your terrible defense anyways.
  9. Rosario has gotten passed by on the prospect list by many. He will not likely make MLB as a Twin. My guess they either leave him off 40 man this year or try to trade him. He has been good, but he plays corner OF so he is easy to replace.
  10. I am all for offering a contract that locks him up for 7 to 8 years at a locked number. You have risk of injuries or poor development, but he seems like the type it may be worth it. You can have him break camp and not play the service time thing, which I know can sour players against teams when they do that. If you do it now, you can save a little. However, on the flip side the player may decide to bet on himself long term too and say no. It is hard for a player to turn that kind of money, because you are locked in no matter what. Sure, you may leave 10 to 20 mil on the table at the back end, but so much can go wrong in 5 to 6 years. We all thought Lewis was the truth and was going to be MVP level years going forward. Hopefully he bounces back, but it is possible he never does. We say other young guys on other teams take off like a rocket only to have years later regress to average or below average.
  11. I see no point in comparing Skenes pick to the other 4, but the other 4 will long be compared as they are all OF. 2 college 2 HS. Personally, I like HS bats over college bats for upside, and college arms over HS. I think Clark and Jenkins will be compared more to each other as both HS and Langford and Crews will be compared. So far, it looks like the last taken, making the Twins pick easy, might be the best. Still too early on all 4, but Crews, the first taken, is looking like the worst. Clark is moving slowly and nothing to say bust yet, but nothing to say top future star either. Langford has been good, but if he is just corner guy with average just above average offense and average defense his value will be much lower.
  12. The only way you trade both Ryan and Lopez is if you decide next year is just about development. I do not think that is the path the team wants too go. We may have starter depth of possible guys, but no one has ran with their chances this year. I doubt either are traded in off-season and either or both could be traded at deadline, assuming health. Both would still net a good return at that point. Jeffers to me is most likely to be traded, unless the team has no plan at catcher. He would be the type of guy that if a team needed an offensive catcher away from getting them over the hump teams could overpay. Wallner, is interesting because he has power will be a good platoon fit for teams. He is the type that could take off in power, or he could be Joey Gallo and take off in strike outs.
  13. This article makes sense, with the broadcasting contracts up in the air, and CBA expected to be a big issue, not many people would want to drop the kind of money it would take to buy the Twins. I have a feeling how both of those situations work out will really reflect the value of a team.
  14. I do not see Baltimore trading him at the low end of his value. If Baltimore is doing a sell off maybe they would just try to get something, but as pointed out if he can regain is prior offense he is extremely valuable. We trade for him hoping that, and Baltimore would sell him hoping he does, or expecting he would not.
  15. Cleary due to his lost time early in season they want to get him more at-bats. No other real reason to call him up to AAA this late in year outside of a few more games due to AAA playing a few more games. I bet he is early call up next year to give 1 more year of control, unless they do the MLB deal doing 7 year deal then he will break camp.
  16. I think his next step will be to have a better plan at the plate when he goes up there. Where he seems to struggle the most is when he looks like he has no plan at all and he takes half swings at pitches on the edges or out of the zone. I think this year he was trying to get his swing right again, now he just needs to have a better plan up there. That is something I have been impressed with Keashal when I have seen him hit. He is less see ball hit ball, but has a real idea of what he is looking for a plan to execute it.
  17. Who is the star on the Brew Crew right now? Stars can for sure help, I would say Buck is a star, but also the biggest star in baseball the last decade has only made playoffs 1 time and lost first round. Having a good team is what wins not just having a star or two. I mean the Angels had most likely the two biggest stars in the game for several years, how did they do?
  18. At 17th round if he even sniffs the majors he was a success. He will not make a prospect list until end of next year if he just crushes all year and jumps up to AAA quickly.
  19. Who are you taking off the 40 man to put him on it? He is not on it now, so "keeping" him on it not a question but is he worth putting on it. We either need to 60 day IL someone or DFA someone to give him a shot. As great as his AA time was he did what he does and regressed at next level. St. Paul is where he should have been crushing as much if not more. He did not fall apart, but I was hoping he would run away with a possible 1st base job and have a few good years. My guess Twins will leave him off 40 man and if a team wants to take him in rule 5 go for it. He may actually be a minor league FA next year not sure.
  20. I doubt there was much offers for Stewart. Yes, he had some good innings with us, he had some bad ones, but overall he spent more time in the trainer room than in the pen. Fans here overvalued him due to his what if he stays healthy upside he showed for us. His track record was that he never will stay healthy. Any team that traded for him was not going to give a legit prospect, or their FO would be attacked by fans like ours was for the Dyson trade. Keep in mind we really did not give up much in that deal either but people act like we gave up a huge prospect.
  21. Pretty sure the trade was more about Rojas not Roden. The article seems to imply that it was Varland for Roden, but it was more like Varland for Rojas and Roden for France.
  22. These are all very SSS and the players that are not rentals will be measured what they do next year or years to come. For the most part only a few of the players we got in return are expected to help us out, most are just depth guys at best.
  23. That is kind of my point, that they have no big bashers top guys that earn the mega deals, but they have a lineup of slightly above average guys, and getting the most out of guys like Vaughn who was doing terrible until they took him.
  24. I think one of the main thing to take from the trades mentioned is they were proven guys that were about to get expensive and they got rid of 2 very good pen guys and a very good to great starter. Our FO made a trade of a few very good pen guys, one with a lot of control still, and fans are super upset. If we trade Ryan or Lopez this offseason fans will be more upset. However, what Brew Crew this year, and Rays in the past have shown is not investing big in single players can actually help if you can flip those guys for more prospects that you hope a few will work out and raise the floor of our team. For example, we are hoping huge things on Jenkins right now, but he could become not very good, we see it happen all the time for top prospects. If we have no other options down the road we get a huge set back. Fans were upset when we kept drafting SS, well you need plenty of options. I think the Twins should adopt more of the type of strategy from the Brew Crew too, Have guys that can get on base, run the bases, and not just look to go yard 1-9.
  25. Bringing people to invest alone will be terrible for fans. No one will invest in a team and willing to just break even with hopes of a payoff at the end. They are going to try to scrape by to see a return on their investment.
