It seems like there is a disconnect between what TD readers want and what the actual Twins want (or are willing to buy): TD: "We want a complete team with stars and most positions. We want to be champions if everything falls in place and highly competitive in all but the most disastrous scenarios." Twins FO: "We want a respectable team that is good enough to draw decent crowds and TV ratings and can be highly competitive if everything falls in place." A cynic might tell the former: "If that's what you want, why don't you start following the Astros or Dodgers?" One of the things I love about following the Twins is that success is not just bought, it's developed through (sometimes) shrewd personnel decisions and (sometimes) effective development of talent. If I just wanted to cheer wins, I'd follow the Dodgers, but I'd have to shower twice a day to wash away the slime I'd feel about that choice.

It must be out to, what, 2054 now?

13 strikeouts in 21 at-bats. Sounds like he'll fit right in with the Twins' other "unwatchables!"

Since everyone can't get enough of "advanced statistics," how about a Watchability Index rewarding plays that are fun to watch? High grades for triples, doubles, stolen bases, balls that challenge a defender to make a catch or throw, and, of course, at bats that tie the game or take the lead? Walk-off homeruns get lots of points, but so do walk-off singles and game-saving defensive plays.

I'll believe Buxton plays the season in CF when I see it. I hope I'm wrong, but this has simply never happened. And he's not getting any younger.

Given the theme of the article, I found it disconcerting that when I scrolled over the picture, Chrome popped up a caption saying "Unavailable."

I'm pretty sure that I read on TD that the new CBA has eliminated that provision. If that's the case, then there would be no reason to delay him unless it's to give someone else a chance first.

    10K per inning is remarkable!

I agree with this. It would have to be a disaster for the Twins to be out of contention at the trade deadline. The real need for another good starter is for the stretch run and the postseason. Plus, we only pay half of a year's salary and we have a better notion of who is doing well, both among the potential acquisitions and among our prospects who might be tradable. It simply makes good sense. (So watch them trade for someone tomorrow!)

Every time I read these lists about the Twins' fantastic prospects, it seems like the Twins have a fantastic farm system brimming with talent that will surely win a handful of World Series in the next decade. But then ... the system is, if I recall, ranked in the middle of the pack. I have to remember that every team has a list of prospects with amazing potential---some of them even better than ours. That said, it's exciting to dream about what the prospects could be. Thanks for doing this series!

The Twins, because they don't have either one!

Congrats to a great player, a great Twin, and a great Minnesotan! Just curious but too lazy to look it up: Is Joe the first player drafted 1-1 to get to the Hall?

I feel so much better knowing that Sano and Gallo (Nationals) are not out there tempting the Twins to re-sign them!

    I can't remember ever seeing a wench who wasn't portable... 🙂

"ensorceled" Great word! Had to look it up.

I agree with a lot of what's been written in the comments here. Ultimately, it may boil down to what's in his brain. Can he learn? Can he adapt? Can he take what the pitcher is giving him? It didn't seem like Sano, in particular, could do any of those things. I remember Rod Carew's comments on a broadcast after 2022 Spring Training. He lauded Arraez for listening carefully to his (Rod's) advice and actually following it on the field. When the announcer asked about Sano, he shook his head and said something to the effect of "he just goes up and swings as hard as he can at every pitch."

What a man! Lopez has the season of his life, signs a long-term contract, and is still working hard to improve. I hope his attitude is contagious!

    Strike the SA. Just NO!

Lots of wins by an unwatchable team won't keep me subscribing to MLB.TV. If it's just wins, I can check the box score and don't have to endure 2.5 hours of tedious home-run derby. I watch games for exciting plays; neither homeruns nor strikeouts qualifies.

I assume that the Dodgers are betting that the soft salary cap will be gone by the time they end up paying the big money so they will escape any penalty other than wasting the money of someone who can easily afford to feed his vanity with such contracts. Or maybe that inflation will explode and the other $680 million will be pocket change. I chuckle every time Dodger owner Todd Boehly's Chelsea side embarrass themselves (now in 12th place, closer to relegation than to Champions League).

Perhaps if he's unhappy he would waive his no-trade clause and let the Twins escape some of the burden of his contract.

This is a great point. Unlike any other position on the field, the catcher plays a critical role in making the pitching effective. The Twins had great pitching last year and none of us really knows how much of that was due to Jeffers, how much to Vazquez, and how much independent of catching.
  23. PDX Twin
Umm. Castro? Or are we trading for a Castillo?

I'm not sure how much it matters, which I guess puts me in the "stand pat" camp. Barring disaster (e.g., injuries) they will win the AL Central. Playoff success, now that we are not guaranteed automatic losers in the first round, is all about the luck of playing your best at the right time. None of the division winners made the WS last year, and this is not unusual. It could easily happen that the Twins unload potentially excellent prospects for someone who adds 2-3 wins and allows them to win the division by 10 games instead of 7. But it's what he does during the postseason that matters at this point. Another Gray-quality pitcher would likely make a difference, but I'm not sure we can afford (in prospects or cash) anyone with a high probability of matching Gray's 2023 performance, which was far better than his "typical year." Maybe we'll get lucky and Ober, Ryan, or one of the younger pitchers will make that step up??
  25. PDX Twin
Indeed. But I want to see them do it on the Twins' budget!
