    I never did competitive baseball, but refereed soccer at amateur levels for years. High school was always the worst because not only were there parent issues, but the student sections were brutal. Several times I was running up and down in front of the student section as a linesman and had to listen to the profanity, vulgarity, and even threats coming from fellow students. Several schools routinely had police escorts to our cars. And Portland is not a city that most would associate with gangs and crime.

    Microsoft doesn't think that's a word, but I love it! An unused, but perfectly apt antonym. I "collect" such words: "exjoy," "reckful," "ept," "uncluding," and "exportant" are other examples.

    Perhaps this is the explanation: The front office has decided to test the question of whether a manager's choices make a difference, so every other game they override his decisions on the spreadsheet with random selections. At the end of the season, they will compare the results of Rocco's decisions vs. the random ones. Not sure where I'd put my money ...

    You really could apply that description to the Twins. To beat a horse I've beaten before: Not only are the Twins a loser, but they are a boring loser! Losing by strikeouts, errors, and station-to-station boreball is beyond losing to this (becoming former) fan!

    True, but one could say the same about most of the lineup. They are overmatched against major-league opposition. The present squad, performing at its present pace, will be lucky to win one of three per series, which adds up to 54-108 over the season. I suspect they'll do a bit better than that, but if winning with an unwatchable team (strikeouts, no speed, poor defense, etc.) is marginally interesting, losing with an unwatchable team is torture. I have watched much less this year, and the trend is downward.

    Yup. I guess we have to add checked swings to the list of injury-inducing plays we don't want the Twins to try. Even Buxton hasn't to my recollection gotten injured on a called strike,
