  1. I mostly agree with this....but they didn't sit still. They tried to fill their holes, even if only with guys from the margins that were once good. As I said, they didn't quit or sit still, they did something to get better, even if only on the margins. Then they got lucky in several ways (the Mets imploding, for one).
  2. I think the takeaway is simple. If you have a legit shot at the playoffs, you should go for it (at least somewhat), and not sit pat. You don't need to blow up the future. There are players to add that were once good, and might get hot/good again. You never know if you'll be in that position again (at least if you are most teams), so don't just sit still or give up. Try to get better, even if only at the margins. Atlanta got lucky, but that is largely the story of the post season, given the short nature of playoff series.
  3. I'm not sure if I should be proud, or wonder how I could spend so much time here..... Love the site, and community!
  4. Then look at only offense and defense and not WAR? Calling people idiots for trying to understand the relative value of a 1B vs a CF seems beyond rude. Beyond.
  5. Who should he have replaced in the last three years? Not Donaldson. Not Polanco. Not C or 1B or CF or probably any OF position. Certainly not SS. Not Cruz at DH. That said, on another team w/o those players (or the guys coming up) he likely has a defensive position. He's not nearly so bad defensively as some think. But he didn't hit as well this year as the previous two....so some think he's a better hitter than he is. Like I said upthread....he's a 2-2.5 WAR player, which is a good player.
  6. I hope not. Sano. Rooker. Donaldson. Arraez. Larnach. Garver. They have enough guys that can DH (and play other spots). A DH only type is worth it for a team that is on the cusp of being great....maybe. But not on this roster. No way.
  7. Fair, I thought it was a bigger gap than that.......maybe they think he does have a shot. The need OF that can field and hit, but they keep drafting those that can only hit.
  8. Martin? The Twins played him in the OF way more than infield. Just put him in LF, and leave him there so he can actually play it well defensively next year. Every month he doesn't, is a month he's not ready to come up and play good OF D.
  9. He's been a 2-2.5 fWAR player each year.....I agree, people here, including me, underestimate him.
  10. To be clear, I think the team is better than its record if it gets a couple SPs.....and has better luck / outcomes from the RPs. But, this team wasn't good. Keeping it largely intact seems odd to me. I really want Martin in LF, and ASAP in the minors. He can hit and field. Other than that, I don't know what I'd do with the roster. Like, AK could be your LFer...as could Larnach. Maybe (I have my doubts) Rooker. Like, the construction seems redundant and off to me, which means they should make some trades.....
  11. I'm continually gobsmacked by people wanting to basically keep a horrible team together......if players don't have trade value, they don't belong on the MLB roster of a winning team (unless that lack of trade value is due to high, fair or not, pay). edit to add: to be clear, this is NOT aimed at one poster, but this site. Which seems to want to keep nearly every player on last year's 40 man ......that isn't a fungible RP.
  12. What's the point of keeping him if he has no value (which I disagree with, btw)?
  13. One of the better posts here in a long time. Well done.
  14. That's a terrible trade. If they eat a ton of money, they need one good prospect back. And they don't need more forty man issues.
  15. It isn't like the Red Sox don't have one of the highest payrolls in the game, and kept other players not named Betts......I'd say the Twins did with Berrios what the Sox did with Betts. We'll see if they do what Boston did with others with Buxton, or trade him or just lose him in FA.
  16. What about the other teams in the playoffs? How good were the Giants before this year with their strategy? They had career years up and down the lineup, kind of like MN in 2019....... I think a lot is glossed over here.....Boston has a massive payroll, the idea they've not spent money "you don't need a big off season" is kind of odd in what you are implying. Before anyone says "copy the Rays"....no team has been able to copy the Rays in years now. It just isn't that easy.
  17. If it is about money and risk, it doesn't matter if he's a free agent or on the roster. And, he's already turned down over fifteen million a year for seven years, reportedly.
  18. He is very highly thought of in prospect circles.......ceiling? a 4 WAR season or two, I'd guess. Not what I expect, I think he's probably a 2-2.5 war player, as his defense appears limited. That is a good player.....we should be happy with 2.5 WAR, imo.
  19. Not worth what? By that logic, don't sign Buxton, right? His status as a Twins makes no difference in terms of money/payroll.
  20. Truth, mostly. There is no guarantee a great player will be there at the exact moment they "put you over the top". Or that you'll be able to sign them. The Twins would 100% be better (unless injury happened, which, anyone can get hurt) if they signed one of these guys. (note: I'm not discussing these particular players and % of revenue on a player, just that the argument here seems to be never sign a FA, or don't sign one until they are the last piece.....both of which I disagree with)
  21. Those saying he's wrong.....show your work, please. It's one thing to criticize his work, it's another to show he's wrong. There is clearly a correlation here. Whether he's right about it being important (not essential, not necessary, important) or not can be argued, but it would be great if those arguing against him held themselves to the same level of work they want out of him.
  22. Ya, I don't get the Jax love on this site. I mean, emotionally, I get it. But factually? Not at all. Could he move to the pen and be good? Sure. But it doesn't seem likely to me. As for the rest? I'd think Martin starting in LF out of spring training and being a great hitter/fielder is much more plausible than any of the other things on this list. Much.
