  1. Please no. Dylan Bundy is barely able to go 5 innings. The Twins have been limiting his innings all season and he's responded with a 4.94 RA9. If they ask him to go 7 innings he's going to give up a crooked number. The Twins do NOT have the starting pitching needed to go 7 innings consistently. Yes, that will put strain on the bullpen but they definitely have a better chance of winning with the bullpen than they do leaning on Archer and Bundy more than they have already.
  2. If you follow that link the data goes back to 2007. Teams had 20% more stolen bases then than they do now. The data has been trending down for 20 years. 3400 steals leaguewide in 1999 and just 2200 last season. MLB Stolen Base League Totals | Baseball Almanac (baseball-almanac.com)
  3. Jose Trevino should get serious consideration for the Gold Glove.
  4. He's throwing out 17% of baserunners but league average is 25%. If his CS% was league average he would have thrown out 3 additional baserunners. The league itself does a pretty good job limiting base stealing. Success rates while stealing have gone up since the 1980s but attempts are WAY down. Nobody attempts to steal unless they think they have an 80% chance of success. Minnesota is exactly league average in stolen bases allowed by opponents with 0.5 stolen bases allowed per game MLB Stats - MLB Team Opponent Stolen Bases per Game | TeamRankings.com The Yankees lead with 0.3 stolen bases allowed per game and the Reds are the worst with 0.7. So, no it isn't possible that "teams run at will" on Ryan Jeffers. He doesn't throw that many out but teams are only sending their best base stealers against him.
  5. Jeffers has allowed 3 more stolen bases than league average.
  6. I agree. He'll be on the roster and that's about when they had Cole Sands debut.
  7. Agreed, this was a fun look at what it takes to make a live broadcast happen
  8. Giving up just 2 runs in 4 innings is actually progress for Balazovic. If he makes it through the rest of the season without having to be shut down for injury it will be a win.
  9. I understand why they want Smeltzer stretched out in AAA in case they need a starting pitcher but I think he could be useful in an MLB bullpen.
  10. Jorge Alcala could be ahead of Kirilloff. There is more depth for outfielders. I'd have Larnach ahead of Kirilloff as well.
  11. I don't know why people are upset he asked Duffey to eat innings in a blowout loss. Were you hoping to see Nick Gordon pitch again?
  12. True. The Twins have an above average defense (10th) and the Reds defense is bad (26th). 46 runs difference over the course of 104 games or nearly half a run per game. Fielding Bible
  13. Throwing in the bullpen at regular intervals, could be back in September.
  14. Anyone else think Correa is going to be a good manager someday?
  15. It's not a matter of physical ability or fatigue. Pitchers get hit harder the 3rd time through the lineup. Only the best starting pitchers have better production the 3rd time through than an average reliever the first time through the lineup. The Twins rotation doesn't really have any starting pitchers who are that good. Tyler Mahle is 32nd in Fangraphs pitcher WAR, the next Twin is Gray at 56th then Ryan at 76th. You should be glad when the bullpen relieves Bundy or Archer.
  16. I'd say the bullpen is no longer keeping them from contending. They're not going to be a top 5 bullpen in baseball.
  17. It makes more sense to me to move up Julien and Severino than it does to move Mikey Perez to AAA.
  18. Using pitchers in a set inning is too rigid of usage. Fulmer is nearly unhittable facing RH batters - spot him in the lineup when there are no tough lefties. There are times when certain relievers will match up particularly well with certain batters. It was a blast watching Pagan get Luke Voit out with seven straight splitters.
  19. Helman is pretty certain not to get selected in Rule 5. He's 26 and having a decent season in AAA - that isn't going to impress anyone. Most teams have their own guy just like this in their system.
  20. Bundy and Archer haven't been that great but they've each been able to take the ball 18 times (tied for the team lead) while other starters have dealt with injuries. Without those two the Twins are in much worse shape, forced to give 36 starts to guys like Cole Sands, Derek Rodriguez and Chi Chi Gonzalez. The Twins are leading the division because of their depth. People make comments about the entire starting outfield being unavailable but Nick Gordon went 1-1 with a BB and 2RBI, Jake Cave was 2-3 with a 2B and a BB, Contreras 1-3 with a HR. That's a productive evening from the outfield.
  21. There's no way I pay Bundy $11M or Archer $10M next season. The buyout for each is $1M and $0.75M - a well deserved bonus for how they have kept the team afloat this year. Gray, Mahle, Maeda, Paddack, Ryan are all starters obtained by trade. They've developed Ober and Winder but neither one can stay healthy for a full season. Smeltzer is probably most valuable in the bullpen.
