  1. One thing that has helped is improved defense, especially infield defense. That is sustainable. Arraez is a 20 run improvement over Sano at 1B. Urshela and Correa are both better than the players they replaced. Celestino has been very good. This pitching staff should overperform because the Twins have an above average defense for the first time in years.
  2. I think Canterino might be the trade bait that brings back a top starting pitcher in a month (Luis Castillo, Frankie Montas). Leave him alone.
  3. Very few catchers have been elected on the first ballot: Ivan Rodriguez and Johnny Bench. That's the whole list. No Yogi Berra, Gary Carter, Carlton Fisk, or Mike Piazza. Ivan Rodriguez was barely elected first-ballot (76% of the vote). The only "likely" first-ballot hall of fame catcher was Johnny Bench. I like Joe Mauer but he's no Johnny Bench. There are also dozens and dozens of players who you could say "He would have been a Hall of Famer except for fill-in-the-blank injury." Ultimately I think Mauer will get elected. He's a likeable guy and that matters more than talent for Hall of Fame induction.
  4. Is being forced off his best position well before the end of his short career supposed to help his case? Piazza was every bit as good of a hitter as Mauer during their respective best seasons and Piazza hit better for a longer period of time. Piazza also played catcher longer than Mauer. The caliber of play in the American League was very different in 1920 compared to 1970 compared to 2020. Even when you account for caliber of play the overwhelming evidence points to Josh Gibson as the best hitting catcher in the history of baseball.
  5. Sure, Josh Gibson played for the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Homestead Grays. There were major leagues besides the American League and the National League, in case you didn't get the memo. If you're going to exclude Josh Gibson for playing before 1947 then you have to exclude everyone else who played before 1947. You should probably exclude anyone who played before 1960 for that matter. That makes "the history of baseball" extend all of 60 years. I'm glad you agree with me that Piazza was a better hitter than Joe Mauer (or to be extra nitpicky, better for more seasons than Joe Mauer). Producing runs is the whole point of hitting. FWIW - Piazza has the higher career batting average.
  6. Looks like an awful year for college pitchers
  7. Gibson had 2511 recorded plate appearances in major league baseball and a whole bunch more that weren't recorded. Piazza has 10 Silver Slugger awards at catcher, which is the highest total of anyone at that position and the second highest total in the history of the award (behind Barry Bonds). He produced nearly 200 more batting runs (RBat) than Mauer over the course of his career. It isn't even fair, Piazza wins this comparison easily.
  8. Only if your history doesn't extend back to Mike Piazza. BTW - Josh Gibson is the correct answer for best hitting catcher in the history of the game. Joe Mauer is the Ted Simmons of his era. Simmons was inducted after 27 years of eligibility. That means we should all be able to enjoy Joe Mauer's induction speech in 2050.
  9. I wish I could watch from home for free. Adding a cable subscription would be $75 a month for me. At least it was $75 when I dropped it. I did a search now to see how much it costs and it won't even let me see the prices until I login and put it in the cart. Cable TV is so expensive now they don't even want to tell you how much it costs! I will stick to listening on the radio and watching the highlights on my phone.
  10. I think a lot of Minnesota families make their summer plans during the winter. Baseball was in the middle of a lockout this winter. I'll bet a lot of families changed their plans from a trip to Target Field to a different vacation.
  11. Oklahoma State isn't exactly "nowhere". That's a good college baseball program.
  12. Headrick is another pitcher who doesn't get on the prospect lists but could contribute someday.
  13. I would love to see Luis Castillo in this rotation. The Twins have the prospect capital to make that happen.
  14. They had an affordable contender but the economics of baseball revenue sharing makes it more profitable to field young, cheap players.
  15. If only hitting was as easy as "See that guy? Hit like him" Apparently you weren't a Twins fan when Matty LeCroy or Ryan Doumit were behind the plate for the Twins
  16. Urshela is also hitting .308/.357/.436 against LHP. You don't throw that away, you try to platoon him with Arraez (hitting .191/.227/.191 v LHP) more often. An Arraez/Urshela platoon at 3B is all-star caliber production.
  17. I agree with this. His bat is decent for a catcher but they need to find better hitters to use the DH at-bats. 13 of 32 games the second catcher has been the DH. That's a problem if they can't find a 4th outfielder who can out-hit their catchers.
  18. That's going to be a fun father-son pitching combo trivia question for Nick Gordon. Dee Strange-Gordon also pitched an inning in MLB for the first time this season. I doubt there are very many players who pitched in MLB who also have two sons who pitched in MLB. I think the only other I saw was Mel Stottlemyre.
  19. Is TwinsDaily trying to jinx the whole bullpen one pitcher at a time?
  20. How do I reverse-jinx on this article?
  21. Better to bring up Godoy to ride the bench. Celestino has been playing very well. Kirilloff can't even get in the lineup consistently right now.
  22. Gray came back but now Paddack is out. Bundy gets a little more leeway.
  23. Depends on how long Gray and Ober (or others, god forbid) are injured. There is some rotation depth at the big league level but after that you're asking whether Bundy is better than Devin Smeltzer, Ronny Henriquez or Cole Sands. As a 7th starter Bundy isn't that bad. BTW - I don't have a lot of confidence that Archer will end the season in the rotation either.
