I don't expect either of them to be really good at hitting LHP just due to natural platoon splits but they shouldn't be as bad as they were in 2023.

Since I left cable several years ago, I have only been able to watch Twins games at home on Apple TV. I am hopeful that there will be an option to subscribe to MLB.tv and see the Twins this season at a reasonable cost ($20/month or less). I have no interest at all in going back to Dish/Cable or a cable-similar streaming package like YouTubeTV.

Assuming there are no injuries they will need to move someone (Julien or Kirilloff) when Lee comes up. Lee is going to start every day, not sit on the bench.

Making decisions based solely on spring training sample sizes is rarely a good idea. That said, if Gordon looks terrible, he'll end up on waivers. If not, he'll hang around a while. Injuries will make the roster decisions.

The latest rumors have Blake Snell likely to go to the Angels and Jeff Montgomery waiting for Texas to finalize a new TV deal. That would make each rotation very lefthanded. The Angels have three lefties in their rotation already (Detmers, Sandoval and Anderson) and the Rangers have two (Heaney and Bradford). Both organizations would likely be willing to deal from their new starting rotation depth if they add to the top.

He wouldn't have made $90M because he was cost controlled through arbitration most of those seasons. It was more of a choice between $26M now and a possible $50M later. It is interesting how everyone has pretty much forgotten his PED suspension. Does that keep him out of the Twins Hall of Fame?
  8. DJL44
Right now the depth chart at Fangraphs has Willi Castro starting at DH. There's room for a bat.
  9. DJL44
No, he turned down 1 year $13M. Two years $26M would be better.

Another factor is they already have someone like Duvall on the 40-man roster: Austin Martin. They don't have anyone like Soler with his 1.080 OPS against LHP. That was an sOPS+ of 186 (he hit lefthanded pitching 86% better than league average).
  11. DJL44
Career numbers: Soler is +11 RBat and -10 RField over 162 games. Duvall is -2 RBat, +10 RField over 162 games. 2022-23 numbers: Soler is +17 RBat -6 RField (89 games fielding). Duvall is -1 RBat and -7 RField (170 games fielding). Duvall gets dinged mostly because he can't handle CF anymore, he's still average in the corners. 36-year-old Duvall is still likely to be a better fielder than 31-year-old Soler. It matters how you deploy them. If you're looking for a bench outfielder then you probably want Duvall. If you want someone full time and more for DH you want Soler. The Twins need another bat more than they need another glove.

Merrifield doesn't hit lefties much better (OPS below 700) than any of our LH batters. They already have Willi Castro to be a utility guy. They need someone who can hit for power off lefthanded pitching. I also don't see many relievers left to add. They're pretty picked over and what's left won't cost much anyway.

There aren't many suitors. Early in free agency Boston, Seattle, Arizona and Toronto were rumored. Seattle traded for Haniger and signed Garver. Arizona signed Pederson and Gurriel. Toronto signed Justin Turner. Latest On Jorge Soler's Market - MLB Trade Rumors Duvall was looking at the Red Sox and the Angels. The Angels signed Hicks after this article was published and are rumored to be interested in JD Martinez. MLB Rumors: Adam Duvall Down to Red Sox, Angels as 'Likely' Free-Agent Landing Spots | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report If Duvall re-signs with the Red Sox then Soler's market is basically the Twins. I don't think it will take 3 years $45M to sign Soler. I think 2 years $26M with some sort of option gets it done.
  14. DJL44
There are also trade possibilities. JD Davis might get moved if San Francisco signs Chapman. Someone mentioned Connor Joe of the Pirates as a good fit. Neither one would cost much for prospects.

Streaming rights are negotiable. The Twins made more money in 2023 from Diamond Sports by guaranteeing there would be no local streaming competitor. They would make less money from Diamond Sports if they sold them cable/satellite rights but did allow fans to stream games locally elsewhere (MLB.tv). I think part of the problem with returning to Diamond Sports is they did such a terrible job actually getting the games delivered to fans. Half the cable/satellite packages didn't have BSN as an option. I think their survey said only 15% of homes in MN had Twins games available.

They have a two year need for this kind of player (there is no RH power bat OF in AAA) so a 2-year contract doesn't bother me. It will take more than just the $8M saved in the Polanco deal to get Soler but they're about $40M below last year's payroll at the moment so the money shouldn't be a problem unless they have a high-priced starting pitcher they're targeting for a potential trade. There are a lot of free agent options for a RH bat (Soler, Pham, Duvall, Martinez, Merrifield, Grichuk, Solano). Picking the right one is important. Soler is the youngest option and an offense-first option. He's also the one you would want to use as a full-time starter rather than just a bench player.
  17. DJL44
St. Louis definitely did. Detroit, Arizona, Cincinnati, Milwaukee and even the Royals added free agent pitching. This isn't a new strategy for acquiring talent.
  18. DJL44
There's still room in the bullpen.

  20. DJL44
Kirilloff is the weakest projected starter on the team. His glovework is underwhelming at 1B which means he needs to hit.
  21. DJL44
Because you can get a bat as good as Polanco for less money if they're not able to play 2B like Polanco.
  22. DJL44
Any 2nd round pick who contributes in the big leagues is beating the odds.
  23. DJL44
I read that as the Twins would retain streaming rights. Bally's on cable and MLB.tv (with no blackouts) for anyone who wants streaming would be my preferred option. They would get a much lower payout from Bally's but it is one year so who cares.

Scarcity. There are always more players than roster spots to begin a season. By the deadline 20% of the players are injured. Then you have to hope a bad team has the player you want on their roster. I feel good about one of the young players figuring it out by the trade deadline. They need the bench bat for April, May and June to allow Martin, Miranda, Severino, Lee and Larnach to develop in AAA.
