    In 2000 Santana was in the bullpen because they had to keep him on the roster. The second season he was still developing as a pitcher - just like Duran was at age 22. Duran was brought up last season because his stuff was too good to leave in the minor leagues. He reached a level of success higher than Santana in 2002 - which is when they decided to try Santana in the rotation. Santana was clearly ready for the rotation in 2003 but the org brought in Kenny Rogers. Duran 2022 is very similar to Santana 2002. What Duran did in Double-A at age 21 is very similar to what Joe Ryan did in the majors last year. I think that's Duran's floor as a starting pitcher. His ceiling is a staff ace.

    Because Santana is an example of a reliever to starter conversion that worked incredibly well for this franchise.

    2024 could be the year. They will lose Mahle, Maeda and Gray to free agency.

    He clearly has the best stuff on the team and that would probably still be the case throwing 98 instead of 102. I don't know why people are so afraid to try. Imagine what a waste of talent it would have been if the Twins had kept Johan Santana in the bullpen. Relievers get hurt all the damned time; they're not protecting his arm having him throw 102 in the bullpen. Give him 30 starts. Even if he's only "Sonny Gray" caliber he should stay in the rotation. If you get a season like 1974 Rich Gossage move him back to the bullpen.

    Not on this team. Kepler and Gallo are excellent defenders. Lewis is unlikely to be better. I think Lewis could be Manny Machado at 3B. You wouldn't put Machado in the outfield.

    The positional adjustment is 10 runs higher at 3B than in LF. If Lewis' defense is average at each you're throwing away 1 WAR per season playing him in LF. Teams haven't been putting slow footed sluggers at 3B. They've been putting a second shortstop at the position (Bregman, Arenado, Machado, Chapman). Jose Miranda is a below average defensive 3B and there are several good fielding LF on the team. That means the Twins would actually throw away 2 WAR putting Lewis in LF and Miranda at 3B.

    I think you're underrating how range can help a third baseman. It makes no sense to me to play Jose Miranda at 3B if Royce Lewis is available. SS, 3B, CF, 2B, RF, LF, 1B in that order and I'd probably trade him if I only had room to play him in RF, LF or 1B.

    He'll get one ball a game in LF and you don't need an arm there. He's too good of a defender to be put out to pasture.

    It would be a waste to use Royce Lewis in LF if he can play the infield. Better off trading him.

    To be fair, the writers didn't elect Baines, that was the Era Committee - mostly former players and executives.

    Yet somehow Billy Wagner, who wasn't half the pitcher of Santana, is on the cusp of election. Seriously, Santana has 7 seasons better than any of Wagner's.

    JT Snow or Eric Hosmer are good comps for Mauer at 1B. Mauer is 0.5 wins above average in the time he spent as a regular at 1B. That doesn't really contribute much to his Hall of Fame case. Will Clark could hit the crap out of the ball. Twice as many HR as Mauer. It helps Mauer that he looks better than Posey and Molina. JT Realmuto is the only active catcher who looks like he has a chance at the Hall of Fame and he needs a few years to catch up to Mauer. Adley Rutschman had a nice debut but it's one season. If the Hall of Fame doesn't elect Mauer they might just stop electing catchers. That would make for a less interesting museum.

    There are dozens and dozens of players who "coulda been" Hall of Famers if they had only stayed healthy.

    All teams use the 40 man roster to shuttle pitchers up and down in order to maximize the number of healthy pitchers available. Twins pitchers with options: Lopez 2, Ryan 3, Paddack 2, Ober 2, Woods-Richardson 3, Varland 3, Balazovic 1 Duran 1, Jax 2, Thielbar 1, Alcala 3, Moran 2, Megill 2, Winder 2, Henriquez 2, Sands 2, Headrick 3. Enlow 2, Ortega 2 I don't expect them to option Lopez, Ryan or Duran and Paddack will be on the injured list but any of the rest could be optioned back and forth to allow for flexibility in the pitching staff. You wouldn't think of 36 year old Thielbar as someone with options but he still has 2 seasons left before free agency.

    Batters in the #3 slot are usually pretty good. Most of them OPS 900 or better against the league.

    It should help Mauer that he's about as controversial as buttered toast. Catchers are rarely elected on the first ballot but Mauer should be elected by the writers eventually.

    You left off Chase Utley from the deserving players who become eligible next year.

    I looked up last season. Opening Day April 8, first transaction 4/12. 4/12 - Recalled Jax, Alcala to IL 4/13 - Larnach and Derek Rodriguez up, Kirilloff and Cotton down 4/14 - Garlick up, Rodriguez down The Opening Day roster lasted 4 games.

    Ober is the 6th starter and will likely need to be used in that role in April. Winder should be in the bullpen. I don't think he has the stuff for the rotation but could throw harder in shorter outings.

    I am expecting the Twins to add two relief pitchers when they are able to put Paddack and Canterino on the 60 day DL. Those two relievers will head north replacing 2 of Alcala, Moran and Megill.

    Has an Opening Day roster ever lasted a whole week? Most times by game 4 there's been a transaction to change the roster.

    Moving to the bullpen generally helps a pitcher's stuff. It is easier to throw hard for an inning and the pitcher can focus on perfecting only a couple of pitches. However, it doesn't usually help a pitcher's command to move to the bullpen.
