  1. I think they should be doing that now even with a healthy Joey Gallo. The obvious answer (to me) is to give Julien a first baseman's mitt.
  2. I thought Mauer made a good speech. It was far better than Dan Gladden's drunken ramble about his wife's chest.
  3. I don't think it would hurt Varland, Headrick or Woods-Richardson to spend the rest of the year in the bullpen. Varland is at 110+ innings pitched on the season. They could give Ortega another chance and add Funderburk if they need a lefty. Beyond that it's probably watching the waiver wire.
  4. It wasn't even an either/or decision. They had the chance to keep Coulombe and Sands. For some reason they kept the young relievers with options on the Opening Day roster instead of sending them to AAA. That's just foolish. A team will need 10-15 relievers to get through the season. The younger pitchers will get plenty of opportunities. Stockpile depth in the bullpen to start the season.
  5. The A's have decided to give Ramon Laureano to whoever picks up the contract. The Twins should claim him if someone else doesn't first.
  6. Part of that is the save stat itself. You can't get a save in the 8th inning but you can get a blown save in the 8th inning. The rest of the bullpen has 55 holds which would mean they have 61 Saves + Holds against 17 Blown Saves.
  7. I don't doubt there is soreness, but if he's really injured how is it not effecting his velocity? Pretty much every MLB player has aches and pains this time of the season. I guess if that qualifies for the injured list, why not.
  8. Severino and Kiersey too. Yake back to AA, De Goti and Contreras released
  9. He's not injured, he's just ineffective. You can't go on the injured list for being bad at baseball.
  10. Which is the same as not doing it. That's a not-accomplishment.
  11. It is very unlikely Mauer gets elected on the first ballot. Catchers very rarely get elected on the first ballot. Piazza and Berra didn't get elected on the first ballot. I think the whole list of first ballot catchers is Johnny Bench and Pudge Rodriguez.
  12. I wouldn't call Kiersey a bust. It was always a long shot he would contribute as a major leaguer. It's still kind of a long shot. He's 26, this might be his career year and he's still only an .850 OPS in Double-A. That won't play as more than a 4th outfielder. He could be a fun addition when rosters expand as a pinch-runner, he can steal a base.
  13. This is an ultimatum to Rocco Baldelli. Win or you're fired.
  14. Looks like they're counting on Royce Lewis to carry them across the finish line.
  15. Those are the odds for every MLB team, including the Braves. What odds would you give me to bet on the Twins? 200-1? If the Twins just sneak into the playoffs they will not be the favorite but sometimes the underdog wins, especially in baseball. I'm fine with rooting for an underdog this October. Beats the hell out of watching football.
  16. You could say the same about needing a RH batting outfielder which is why it was so weird they signed Gallo.
  17. I think there's a chance Gray accepts the QO. He was talking about retirement but 1 year $20M may be tempting.
  18. That full list includes Severino, Camargo, Chris Williams, Bechtold, Prato, Martin, Laweryson, Funderburk, Kiersey, Salas, Hidalgo and Regi Grace. That's the group they're selling hard.
  19. I like the rentals with big salaries: Canha, Raley, Stratton, Hernandez, Grichuk, Suter, Cron, Hand, Shreve, Fulmer
  20. He will have ups and downs. We're seeing one of the "ups".
  21. They make a lot of movies about the underdog who gives up halfway through the season, don't they?
  22. Probably because many of the veterans (Sonny Gray, Kenta Maeda) are a lot better than the younger players (Varland, Woods-Richardson) who would take their place. I'm fine with clearing out dead wood (Gallo) but that's not "selling".
