  1. Then someone will be screwed over because they won't be getting enough playing time. As of now there is no evidence at all Lee will be better than Farmer, Martin will be better than Margot or Miranda will be better than Santana. If one of them is one of the best 50 players in AAA they can make a move. Until then, they need to earn a roster spot.
  2. If Martin plays every day then Wallner is sitting the bench. If Brooks Lee comes up then Lewis or Kirilloff or Julien sits. Which young player do you want to mess with? I'd rather tell Margot and Santana to sit.
  3. Momentum is the next day's starting pitcher - Earl Weaver
  4. Be one of the best players in AAA. Play better than the veteran non-roster guys who couldn't find a job this spring. If you're not one of the 50 best players in AAA then you're probably not good enough yet.
  5. If you're a defensive replacement and the short side of a platoon that's your outlook. I would rather have Margot and Santana on the bench and Martin and Miranda in AAA playing everyday. I really don't want Brooks Lee turned into a platoon player. Playing time matters. 10-12 extra at-bats a week is 40 a month or 250 over a season. If a starter gets hurt, then call up the rookie and give them a bunch of playing time.
  6. I would rather have a potential future starter play every day at AAA than have them play 2 times a week on the MLB bench. If it's a player like Prato or Helman who has probably maxed out his talent and is unlikely to be more than a bench player in MLB, then fine. If they're going to sit the bench in AAA then sitting the bench in the big leagues is a step up.
  7. That would stunt the growth of your prospects AND make sure you don't have any depth when some of them inevitably fail to meet expectations. Then you'd be searching the waiver wire for discarded veterans.
  8. Fielding stats are subject to small sample size variation just like hitting stats are. Players at many positions get fewer fielding chances than at-bats. Most plays are routine and it is only a small percentage of difficult plays that separate players on the defensive metrics. An analogy would be if hitters hit off a tee for half their at-bats and a live pitcher for the rest. If players are good one year and bad the next there is often an injury (Correa's foot) that explains the difference.
  9. The whole point of the trade is to free up playing time for a rookie. Why would you want an immediate contributor in return? You'd want Lee or Larnach or Martin or Funderburk or Varland or Woods-Richardson to get the innings.
  10. They aren't going to send down a starting position player just because they have options. If Wallner or Kirilloff end up in AAA this season it will be due to poor performance. Spots will naturally open up due to injuries (I don't think any team has their top players all healthy at the same time) and if someone like Lee or Larnach shows they are ready to be a contributor as a starter then they will open a spot for them with a trade. The Twins have several veteran players with 1 season of team control remaining (Kepler, DeSclafani, Thielbar, Margot, Farmer, Santana). Those players are pretty easy to trade off at the deadline.
  11. I don't think he would be claimed but I think the Twins could work out a trade where they don't have to eat all $10M.
  12. Yes, pinch hitting Santana for Kirilloff improves the offense in that at-bat and the defense for the rest of the game. This is why they bring in Farmer for Julien. We're likely to see Margot do this with Wallner, too.
  13. He was also horrible defensively in April and May. They sent him back to AAA for a month and he got better. Buxton was the full-time DH so he had to play a position or go back to AAA.
  14. I am so tired of people bringing up this song when discussing analytics. It's not clever the 5000th time.
  15. Gallo had already fallen off the cliff. They spent $11M to see how high he would bounce at the bottom.
  16. Does your friend not have an internet connection?
  17. Kirilloff is going to be in the lineup against RHP or there is really no reason to have him on the roster at all. At least one relatively weak batter is going to have to play against RHP. That will be one of Margot (2023 694 OPS vs RHP), Santana (727), Jeffers (828) / Vazquez (547), Farmer (687) or Castro (803). It's going to depend on which regular (Kirilloff, Julien, Buxton, Wallner, Kepler) needs a rest day at DH and where they want to upgrade the defense that day. They have a lot of different options depending on matchups and rest. Note that Jeffers had the best bat against RHP. It will make sense to give him some DH days and start Vazquez for defense against RHP. Also, expect to see a lot of pinch hitting and defensive replacements this season. They have a lot of defensive flexibility on the bench. Rocco is going to use the whole roster in several games.
  18. They're planning accordingly by keeping all of those capable players in AAA. No opening day roster survives more than a couple weeks without a callup due to injuries. 48 different players (27 pitchers) received playing time for the Twins in 2023.
  19. If Castro is in the lineup he should probably be in the field. Most of his value is his ability to play above average defense at many positions. Good time to give a different player a rest day at DH.
  20. He only played 38 games at AAA. He started the season on the roster and hit .222 before getting sent down. After a month he was back, hit .229 in May and got sent back for all of a week. Then he was back to stay. This statement is just revisionist history.
  21. The same thing that happens if Kirilloff stinks again, they lose some games. It's only a bad move if the Twins fail to react to reality and adjust. Yes, it took them forever to adjust to Gallo's disappointing offense last year but they also didn't have many other options to try instead - Miranda was awful, Larnach was bad and Buxton was injured.
  22. None of them individually is more likely to be a contributor than Santana. By the time you figure out which one of them has taken a step forward in production it will be June or July.
  23. Gallo had a terrible track record from the previous year and they signed him to be a starter, not a backup. Not the same.
  24. Because the alternative is Miranda who wasn't hitting OR playing defense worth a damn last year. There is a lot better chance Santana can provide a 750 OPS than Miranda, especially when Miranda is still rehabbing after shoulder surgery at the start of training camp. Plus, Santana can actually play 1B. I don't know why people are concerned about optioning the bench players. They're all veterans who should be able to produce if they're not injured. If they are injured they'll go on the injured list.
  25. The playing time split between Santana and Kirilloff is not determined. The bullpen pecking order is TBD. Castro and Margot will compete for playing time in the outfield.
