  1. Happy to see him gone. Yes he was better last year, but we used him in lower leverage situations. I still would not trust him. Of course the big question is who do we get to replace him?
  2. Too early - I suspect we will add another veteran starter - the FO likes to do that. I put Varland in the BP after stretching him out as a SP in the spring, and then he can move from BP to SP when we have the inevitable breakdown.
  3. Somehow a rotation with Gray/Gibson/Lynn does not look good to me. With Gray, if he needs to come out after 5 they need a good BP. Gibson has a career 4.54 era and last year it was 4.73. He was never a big game pitcher. Lynn has a career 3.74 era and last year was 5.73. I will never think well of Lynn after his pouting Twins career, but I also think he is done. Not sure the Cardinals are really a lot better.
  4. I have to change the conversation a bit - these are arms with potential. Balazovic was a lock for MLB rotation at one point in our prospect rankings. Winder looked like he had turned the corner and would be an excellent major league arm. SWR has been talked about every year since we got him. Sands never looked like the top candidate the be team kept bringing him up and Headrick is really struggling. That being the case the question I have is who is in charge of developing these arms? Who is watching out for them in the minors? Do we have the right coaches and methods? I don't know the answer but these are five who are ready to fall through the cracks and we next need to see our younger pitchers progress.
  5. In this period of speculation – who to trade, who to sign, etc. My mind wandered. What if I could make a movie team? Well here it is – add, subtract, debate: Catcher Kevin Costner (Bull Durham) Robert DeNiro (Band the Drums Slowley First Base Gary Cooper (The Pride of the Yankees) Pete Vuckovich (Major League) Second Base Chadwick Boseman (42) Short Stop Molina Reyna (Major League) Third Base Roger Dorn (Major League) Danny Gams (Bull Durham) Outfield William Bendix (Babe Ruth Story or John Goodman (The Babe) Barney Pepper (61) Thomas Lane (61) Tommy Lee Jones (Cobb) Wesley Snipes (Major League) DH Robert Redford (The Natural) Starting pitchers Dan Dailey (Pride of St Louis) Charley Sheen (Major League) Ronald Reagan (The Winning Team) Charlie Rose (Major League) Dennis Quaid (The Rookie) Bullpen Tim Robbins (Bull Durham) Josh Duhamel (Spaceman) Willie Mueller (Major League) Gary Busey (Rookie of the Year) Manager Tom Hanks (A league of their own) Bench Coach Tom Selleck (Mr Baseball) General Manager Brad Pitt (Moneyball) Announcer Bob Uecker (Major League) Agent Tom Cruise (Jerry Maguire) Just missed: Anthony Perkins – (Fear strikes out} – Jimmy Piersall James Stewart (The Stratton Story) – Monty Stratton Ryan Lane (I see the crowd Roar) – Dummy Hoy Stan Ross (Mr 3000) Geena Davis ( A league of their Own)
  6. The names you list at the end are not FA pitchers that would interest me. I think we trade now. Good luck to Maeda - I think the Twins were right not to extend the contract to two years.
  7. That was fun, but mostly meaningless. Trades are done to accomplish something that often is not measured in WAR and that is why it is hard to judge these trades, Does Julien replace Arraez? Would Garver still be a big bat for us like he was for Texas this year? Does Vasquez make him irrelevant? I don't think so. Does WAR matter in Graterol v Maeda - or could we ask if our BP would be better without that trade. Losing Wade seems like a big deal because SF knew how to use him. Would he have played if we kept him here? Too much to really consider. But luckily no Brock for Ernie Broglio. no Pedro Martinez for Shields, No Randy Johnson for a handful of prospects that never made it. No Alexander for Smoltz. No Maris for Don Larsen. And closer to home - no Span for Meyer. No Santana for a who is it bundle. Wait and see, but nothing outrageous in these trades.
  8. No - we have to think like a pennant contender - we have to grow and get better, not be a home for the homeless.
  9. Would any team dream of trading for Buxton? Catcher is such a difficult position to fill I would have Jeffers on the list.
  10. I do not expect anything - I think he is a lost prospect who needs a really bad team to give him some ABs
  11. It is perspective - how much judgment is allowed, how much statistics dictate. Data has always been collected, but the way it is used is the key.
  12. I keep Castro - Kiriloff and Jeffers are no brainers - Thielbar one year at a time. He is aging and could lose value quickly, Gordon we can lose - I prefer Farmer, Alcala is another we can lose, but it does not hurt to keep him around. It is a shame this happens early because trades really will determine value.
  13. On the trade market he has zero value - he is either on the team of DFA
  14. The biggest take away from all this articles information was how HRs and runs scored do not correlate. Get timely hits!
  15. Next list - who is most likely to be traded? As the comments show we will have some logjams, as well as injuries, some inability to adjust and other issues, but with a constant need for arms - who is most likely to be traded? I cannot predict - after trading Petty last year I am still in shock. Then the question is - the Bullpen - which prospects end up in the BP (and succeed)?
  16. I enjoyed the review. I do not like the high ranking of Soto - I need to see him play first, but otherwise it is a nice list with a lot of youth. As far as arrival - that is really tough, I cannot argue with your choices, but we have seen so many things happen - how many years were we waiting for Lewis and then all the fluke accidents. With the Buxton situation we have Martin projected as a CF, but his career has been more 2B so wait and see. We have already burned out one CF prospect by calling him up to early and now he is no longer even a prospect if he is still with us. And arms! Does it matter that they have allowed Raya to only throw 4 innings? Is it frequency, pitch selection, physiology, or innings that harm their rotators and ulners?
  17. https://sabr.org/journal/article/willie-mays-first-season/ I keep thinking about Willie Mays and how Durocher and the Giants stuck with him as he struggled. That is a rare thing and it might be what Larnach needed.
  18. I am also having trouble with the surplus of OF after reading the various TD essays. We are hurting at CF, we have Wallner and Kepler on the corners and seem to think Kepler will be gone. We project sudden fame for Austin Martin without much proof and look at Castro and Gordon as OFs even though they began as IFs and are really utility guys. Now Larnach has really disappointed me and I was expecting so much more, but with the obvious evidence I ask why his addition to a trade would move the needle at all. Other teams no more than we do. Maybe the A's can pair him with Rooker, or the Tigers can add him to Baddoo, but I am not seeing value nor do I see a compelling reason to have him take a 40 man spot.
  19. These markets tend to surprise me so I can only wait and see what is offered. Of course we want pitching - so does everyone else. Who has so much pitching that they are willing to send a top 3 rotation piece for a position player? Most likely we get prospects - which I don't mind as long as we can continue to promote our prospects.
  20. It must be thanksgiving time - we are grateful that we are cutting payroll so that Austin Martin who has a three year slash line of 256/388/361 can be the CF solution. No more whiny Sonny Gray - maybe we can bring up David Festa early and he will become a shining star. I am sorry, I know it is hard to write lots of copy in November, but I am not buying the positives to cutting payroll.
  21. It depends on - his spring training, Kiriloff's health, Miranda's rebound, trades with Polanco and Kepler and injuries. This is not the time to decide.
  22. I miss Garver and I do not think we can make all the connect a dots that link it to getting rid of Donaldson. There were other ways to do that. I am happy for him and now he will be with???? The Twins are fine, I just do not want to overstate the success of the trade since I do not think it was a success.
  23. We are all guessing, but with Buxton it is not just last year. This is an ongoing saga. In 9 years he was averaged 67.75 games a year - including his amazing 140 game season in 2017. Over those 9 years he has averaged 60.22 games in CF - not even a half time CF. Remove the 140 game year and his average drops to 34.66 games per year. 2024 will be seven years since he was our real CFer. I do not dislike Byron, I appreciate his skills, but some bodies do not hold up as well as others (that includes mine).
  24. Get Taylor back - we know him, have Martin spell him and start moving towards a more permanent solution. I am sorry to say I no longer hope for Buxton in center. It was exciting, but it is time to move on no matter what that contract says. I am not interested in the last options, they are not better than Castro and Gordon. Hicks had one part of a season where he shined, but he has multiple seasons where he has not. The only option that I really like is Kiermaier.
