Week in Review: Coming Undone
LambchoP replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think calling up some young determined, hungry prospects like E Rodriguez and Eeles could provide some kind of boost. Maybe give the guys slumping like Lewis and Castro a bit of a break. Either way, we better use this home stand to turn it around and win some games. Otherwise this next road trip against Boston and CLE may just spell the end of our playoff hopes.- 34 replies

Hopefully Jenkins plays really well at AA and can start back there next year. As someone said, his biggest obstacle will probably be injuries. It seems like the norm for this organization. I just hope they don't rush him or have him start trying to play a bunch of other positions like they've done to some of our other guys. Jenkins has a good chance at being a true superstar in a few short years, IF the Twins don't screw him up...

Even though we're technically still in a playoff spot, it sure seems like most of our veterans have checked out mentally and given up on the year. Buxton and Correa aren't coming back to save us. Lewis and Castro look completely lost at the plate. We've already got Lee, Helman and Keirsey up. Why not call up Eeles and Rodriguez and see what they can do. Austin Martin should be getting regular at bats too, auditioning for a backup outfield job next year.

Royce Lewis Has Run Out of Gas
LambchoP replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure what they're doing wrong, but it really seems like an organizational problem. All of our MLB stars and all of our top minor league prospects just can't seem to stay on the field? With a team that has payroll limitations, having our top paid guys in Correa and Buxton only playing about half a season year after year, is going to cripple the rest of the team. Lewis is looking like he's going to be the exact same. If we can only count on our best players for half a season or less, there is something wrong. Especially when we are seeing the same thing in the minors. Jenkins, Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Keaschal. All these guys are missing serious time. Twins need to start looking at durability and stamina as a real skill that needs to be worked at and improved. I have a hard time believing ALL these kids the Twins are drafting are really ALL that unlucky or brittle. Our conditioning coaches or strength coaches, personal trainer s...they all have to do better I think. -
Glad he finally got his much deserved call up. Aside from Buxton, Keirsey is the only true center fielder we have. I think he can help the team several ways. Good d, stolen base threat, solid at bats. Unfortunately he hits left handed. With Roccos obsession with platoons and pinch hitting, I think the fact that he hits lefty will cut into his playing time. I don't see Rocco starting an OF of all left handed hitters too often.

Searching for Replacement Value on the Twins Roster
LambchoP replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lewis or Lee cannot REPLACE Correa. Castro cannot REPLACE Buxton. These are guys that all need to be playing together. There was only 17 games this year with Lewis Buxton and Correa in the lineup together. That's horrible. It's looking more and more like all three of these guys, the highest paid and supposed leaders of our team, cannot handle the rigors of a full baseball season. Buxton and Correa only play about half the games and this probably won't be getting any better as they get into their 30's. Lewis also seems to be as injury prone as anyone. Like everyone else, I was glad they locked up Buxton and glad they signed Correa. But using up most of the payroll on just a few guys who are always out really hurts the rest of the team. And with all the payroll cutting, it really hamstrings our GM and doesn't leave much money to improve the team. I just think the Twins brain trust needs to focus more on durability as a skill when looking for free agents or draft picks. We even see this with our top prospects like Jenkins, Rodriguez, Gonzalez. Oh they are really good, when they're not on the IL....- 7 replies

This team has no fire,no heart and soul, no fight in them whatsoever. It really seems to me, after the trade deadline came and went without any real additions, both Correa and Buxton lost hope in the team and have had zero interest in playing again this year. Like really, Correa can't even try to DH because his feet hurt? Buxton has his MRI come back clean but is too sore to play? These are supposed to be the leaders of this team. With so many youngsters on our team looking for guidance, it is really not a good look for our stars. Lewis and Castro look absolutely cooked. Either Lewis is hurt, or it's a mental thing. With everyone else seemingly given up on the year it's too much pressure for him to have to carry the whole lineup. At least Miranda is still hitting, just not sure where his power went.

Another loss because of Rocco. Pulling Ober was ideotic. Dude was only at like 82 pitches, sat down 15 in a row and pitching a one hitter! On top of that, he decides to bring in Duran in the 8th? Even the casual fans could tell you, Duran has been lights out in save situations, but non saves like yesterday he's been bad. Sure, the hitting has been pathetic and we won't win many games only scoring two runs. But this win was attainable and dumb management blew it. Especially against KC, especially at this point in the year where every win counts is just inexcusable. Putting Farmer at first base replacing Santana was also a laughable idea.

As far as Prelipp goes, he's looking like one of our better pitching prospects. If this year is basically a rehab year then starting 25 in AA could give him a legit shot at a bullpen role towards the end of the year and if he can stay healthy, maybe a starting role in 26.

Eeles sure keeps on hitting like he wants to be in the bigs. I think his speed, energy, contact skills and stolen bases could really be a spark plug. Not sure how his defense is but he's got to be better than Julien right? I'm guessing that's how he fits onto the Twins roster, taking second base over for Julien. An infield of Lewis, Lee, Eeles, Correa, Miranda and Keaschal seems pretty legit. Not to mention Severino and a few other young guys waiting in the wings.

David Festa Sure Looks Like a Major-League Starter
LambchoP replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He's had a pretty good debut in his small sample size. I think he'll need to develop another pitch if he wants to do better pitching to a lineup two or three times. As with most young pitchers, he could stand to improve his control and command too. Overall I think Festa and SWR should be solid, cost controllable starters who can give us competitive starts, as long as we can keep them healthy. Health and injuries are usually the main issues with this team year after year. It's always oh, we have so much SP depth, IF all the starters pitch all year. This lineup could be deadly, IF we ever get Correa Buxton and Lewis to play together..... -
The Positive Spin On Max Kepler's Impending Departure
LambchoP replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've always liked Kepler but it's time to move on. Him leaving opens the door for E Rodriguez and eventually Jenkins. Guys like Martin and Keirsey can earn themselves a backup OF spot on the roster. Kepler should get a shot on another team next year, we just have more than enough younger and cheaper options. Best of luck to ya Kep, you had some really cool moments over the years:)- 26 replies

Twins are hoping Jenkins can be our star of the future, taking over for Buxton in a few years. I think with the time he's missed this year he starts 25 in A+ with a promotion to AA after a few months. Possibly he could make it to ST Paul by the end of the year and start there in 26, with a call up sometime that year. Just don't rush the kid, do it right and let him develop the right way. I hope E Rodriguez and Keaschal can debut next year. Buxton will always need a backup and E Rodriguez could be a great OF bat. Certainly much better than Martin or Castro. Keaschal will help the IF with his bat. Julien looks to be the odd man out of they stick Keaschal at 2nd. If his bat really does well, maybe he's our long term solution at 1st base. Although I still think Lewis would fit best there. Either way, I think some trades will be needed to open roster spots for all these young guys coming up. I know they don't have much value now, but the guys I see as expendable are Julien, Kiriloff, Martin, Keirsey if he can put together a good showing. Castro would have the most trade value, but Rocco has such an obsession with utility guys I doubt we trade him unless his contract is up, or one of these young guys thrives at being a utility guy. Hopefully we can get some much needed pitching help from our stock of position players

Good, the Twins should get the best value out of Varland in the pen. He can still go 2 maybe even three innings if need be. They should do the same for Paddack next year. These two former starters along with our big 4 of Duran Jax Alcala and Sands, not to mention Stewart and Topa, could be the start of a solid pen. All we're really missing is a solid lefty or two. I think Headrick has some promise, but I'd like to see them sign a veteran lefty. Of course this would cost money, so who knows if it'll happen at all. If ownership won't spend money or give out contracts to upgrade the rotation, you think they could at least try and reinforce the pen a bit. We all saw how the waiver wire, minor league, budget bargain signing bullpen plan worked out this year lol ..

Twins Minor League Report (9/6): Playoff Hopes Dashed
LambchoP replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My guess is something similar to this year. A bunch of waiver wire and DFA pickups, minor league deals. Maybe we sign one or two major league arms to a one year deal of 1-2 million, but that'll probably be all. Everyone saw how this kind of plan worked out this year lol. We have a good top of the bullpen with Duran, Jax, Alcala, Sands and Stewart. Henriquez has looked pretty good so far. If we get Topa healthy and then throw in Paddack and Varland I think the only true need are a couple of solid lefties. Theilbar and Okert will be gone and Funderburk should be AAA depth.- 13 replies

Twins Minor League Report (9/6): Playoff Hopes Dashed
LambchoP replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I'm not sure we will have that much starting pitching depth. My guess is Paddack and Varland will be in the bullpen. That leaves a rotation of Lopez, Ryan, Ober, SWR and Festa. That leaves our depth in AAA as Zebby and Morris. Raya doesn't look like he's ready for a promotion after putting up an ERA over 5 this year. Lewis has missed so much time, I'm guessing he starts in AA along with Culpeper and some of our other young guys. Doesn't leave us with too many good options in AAA for when Injury inevitably hits our MLB rotation. I think we need at least one major league starter, not to mention the bullpen needs some serious work as well.- 13 replies

I have high expectations for both Festa and Zebby. I'm pretty sure both these guys can be solid mid rotation starters. Honestly, they were both rushed this year though, Zebby more so. At least Festa had a decent amount of time at AAA, but Mathews started the year in A ball. Had like a month or so at AA where he did pitch like sn ace, but then he only had 2 or 3 starts at AAA where he got knocked around. If it weren't for injuries and lack of depth, Mathews should have finished the year at St Paul. I think Festa will be our fifth starter next year with Mathews and Morris as 6 and 7 waiting in the wings. Cory Lewis and Raya both probably need another full year in the high minors.
-
A lineup consisting of one or maybe two of Farmer, Martin and Vasquez is ok, but all three in one lineup? In a real important game? This lineup is really bottom of the barrel. No Buxton, no Correa, Lewis playing hurt and slumping, 3 or 4 AAA players filling in for starters, and that's just the offense. 3 rookies in a rotation is going to really stress a bullpen and put a lot of pressure on a lineup. And when both the bullpen and lineup are being held together with spit and glue, losses happen. Maybe we scrape enough wins together for the last wildcard spot. If we do, I expect an embarrassing sweep. Here's to next year :)

Twins Minor League Report (9/6): Playoff Hopes Dashed
LambchoP replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It sure looks like Eeles deserves to be in our top 30 prospects list with the year he's had. If he continues to play like this we could see him with the Twins next year. I think they should decide whether he's an IF or an OF though. For outfielders we have ERod, Rosario, Keirsey, Mkusker? IF we've got Severino, Eeles, Helman. Good crop of hitters doing well in the minors. If a few of these guys can out in the majors we should have some legitimate depth, which is huge on a team like ours with so much injury potential.- 13 replies

Why Is Royce Lewis Playing Second Base?!
LambchoP replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think eventually our IF will be 1b - Lewis 2b -Lee/Julien SS - Correa/Lee 3b - Miranda Unless we sign a power hitting first baseman to put some thump in our lineup. With the financial limitations this team has, I'm guessing that doesn't happen:( -
It sucks but I don't think we'll be seeing Buxton or Correa again this year. Buxton is even more frustrating because there was talk of him not even needing an IL stint. Then, instead of sitting him just a few days, it was going to be the minimum IL stay. Now here we are a month later and he's saying he's too hurt to play. Clean MRI notwithstanding. I think we all just have to accept him and Correa are part time players who will only be able to average about half a season. I also don't see them doing any better as they age and get farther into their 30s. It wouldn't be that big of a problem because they do usually produce when they're out there, but for a team with payroll restrictions, it literally cripples us paying two players 55 million per year as only part time players. It doesn't leave enough money leftover to fill other holes. At this point I think we're just stuck riding it out and hoping for as many games as possible, because no other team is going to take on either contract with these guys:(

Pablo pitching like a true ace. Nice to have him anchoring our rotation. If Ober can just figure out KC we'll have a real good one-two punch. Jax has got to be one of the best relievers in the game and Duran has been pitching much better lately. Our bullpen is still a mess other than the top 4. Too bad Winder just went on the IL, I thought he could have been our first reinforcement. Varland should be in the pen as well. His last 8 run outing should be his last chance. I'd bet he can pitch better and help the team more pitching one or two innings of relief rather than getting absolutely shelled trying to be a starter. Looks like we're not going to see Topa, Paddack or Funderburk this year. Hopefully management addresses the bullpen in the off-season. And actually addresses it, not doing the minor league, waiver wire, rehabbing type signings. We've all seen how that played out...

I think it'd be rushing it a bit to debut a 21 year old who just missed half a season and has barely played half a year at high A and AA. Best case scenario would be to have him play in the AFL to make up the at bats he lost this year. Start 25 in AAA and get a call up when it looks like he's ready to produce. Usually when young guys get called up before they're ready because of injuries, it can turn out bad and hurt their confidence. Of course, if Buxton, Margot and Kepler are done for the year, we just may see him. Not sure what happened with this team, but everyone just seemingly ran out of gas and got hurt. Buck, Correa, Kepler, Margot, Lewis looks like he's playing hurt, he couldn't even run out those ground balls last night. Now Santana might have hurt his hand? If we doake the playoffs, we'll be playing a juggernaut team with almost an entire field of untested rookies. Not a good look for a contending team lol
